Look, you really ought to just get ahead of this and contact the IRS. Between the data sharing agreements between America and Germany, they’ve already flagged that something isn't adding up somewhere. Better safe than sorry.

Dana Chavez4 said:They’ve gone and seized my wages, even though I don't owe them a dime. Instead of actually helping, they're just blocking everything, and honestly, dealing with these guys at the Department of the Treasury has been a nightmare. I tried to have a civil conversation with them to clear this up, but they aren't interested in giving me any explanations; they just resort to threats, telling me they'll just trigger another garnishment if I don't pay up immediately. My employer even showed me my pay stubs to prove that the specific amount was already deducted for the seizure, but apparently, that doesn't matter to them one bit.

Look, if they pulled it from your check, there's a real chance they didn't remit the full amount listed on the court order. Maybe they misread it, maybe they're incompetent, who knows?
Go down to the payroll department at your office and demand to see the paperwork. Make them show you the official order versus exactly how much was sent over.
There could definitely be a mistake there.

It's also totally possible they paid it but failed to send the confirmation receipt (if the court required one), so now you're stuck chasing a ghost debt that technically doesn't exist anymore because someone, somewhere, simply failed to do their job.

And honestly... seeing it jump from $83 all the way to $567? Wow. I have no clue how that even happens.

Man, seriously 🙏
Thanks a ton.
I’m gonna go through everything and jot it all down so I don't get blindsided again. Apparently, for some reason, my messages just aren't coming through.

So, is it actually possible that I just have some weird setting messed up and that's why I'm getting absolutely nothing?
I haven't received a single email—even though they definitely have my address—and I didn't even get that little pop-up notification when I plug my card into the reader or stick my USB into the computer. Zilch. Nothing at all.

Is there a chance our IT guy missed a step when he was nuking Windows XP to install Windows 7 and setting everything else up?
I honestly don't get it. How is it that you guys are all getting emails from FINRA, but I'm sitting here in total silence? 🤔

When I dig into the browser settings to check the certificates, I see them all listed there, but I have zero clue which one belongs to which bank or which one is from FINRA. It’s just a mess of abbreviations and random numbers... I can't remember them off the top of my head, but there aren't any actual names to tell me who is who.
I've got a bunch of certificates sitting there, but I have no way of knowing which one is, say, from FINRA, JPMorgan Chase, or the Federal Reserve.
It's driving me insane. 🙂

Where is that quiet IT crush of mine who usually pops up on this subforum once in a while to explain this stuff to me? 🙂

I used to get an email every single time, but then this last one just never showed up.
The only way I can make sense of it is if the damn thing got lost in the shuffle while we were messing around with our Windows updates and switching over to a new Outlook setup—that whole process dragged on for a few days and was a total headache.
I mean, who knows if that’s even a real thing. 🤔
Let's just hope it doesn't happen again.

I’ve got about a million digital certificates floating around somewhere (don't even ask 😁). And lately, this weird thing keeps happening—twice now—where I get zero warning that they’re about to expire.
First it was the IRS, and now some big commercial bank.
How is that even possible?
Even those apps and programs—what do you call them, Gemalto or whatever—didn't say a single word. (Tech experts, please don't laugh at me, I'm doing my best to explain this 🙈 )
With the Federal Reserve, for example, as soon as I plug my card into the reader, a pop-up hits me telling me exactly how many days I have left before the certificate expires. But with the IRS and this other bank? Absolute silence. 🤔

Is it just me? Like, did I mess up some setting or something?

Exactly.
Every single country in the European Union plays by its own rules when it comes to sales tax, so they always add those little disclaimers to stay compliant.
Honestly, as long as they show up in the VAT Information Exchange System, you’re good to go.

Just give the collections agent a call and ask them directly.
I’m assuming you already know which firm is handling the case.

I'm assuming they’re already set up in the VAT Information Exchange System, so you should probably just double-check that in the database first.
If they are, then honestly, don't sweat it. They'll either cite a specific section of their tax code, drop an EU directive number—I can't recall the exact one off the top of my head—or just add a note stating it's a tax-free delivery within the European Union. It's standard procedure. You don't need to go out of your way to explain anything to them.
Paid training while unemployed: Does sick leave still apply? in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·

It’s almost been six months since I started my professional internship. During the peak summer season, I didn't pay much attention to the administrative side of things, but now it’s starting to get under my skin. There are several aspects of this arrangement that leave me questioning whether everything is being handled legally.
I am currently interning within a tourism firm.
The situation involves two separate agreements: one through the state unemployment office and another directly with the company. Regarding the state contract, things got messy when they handed me a pile of paperwork and told me, "This is just for the Department of Labor, just sign here and there," all without ever providing me with a signed copy for my own records. Before that, I was given an internship agreement solely between myself and the company. Does an agreement made strictly between an intern and a business hold any legal weight if the state agency isn't mentioned at all? Furthermore, the contract includes a non-disclosure clause stating I cannot share business information or documents, classifying them as trade secrets. This leaves me wondering: do I actually have grounds to file a complaint with the Department of Labor regarding tasks I'm being asked to perform that fall outside my actual job description, or should I just keep my head down and stay quiet? To make matters worse, nobody has even provided me with a formal list of the specific duties I am supposed to be learning.

Ultimately, my main concern lies with the validity and implications of these two contracts.

That’s the one question I actually have an answer for.
Look, a contract is a contract. It carries legal weight unless some judge decides otherwise.

If you think things aren't above board, your only move is to take it to court and ask them to weigh in on whether the whole thing is actually valid and legal.

At the end of the day, if one side thinks the deal means X and the other side thinks it means Y, you're just stuck waiting for a judge to make the final call.

A statement of account isn't exactly the same thing as an invoice. Take a closer look—it looks to me like they just sent you an Android readout of your card activity or your bank balance.

Everything is working perfectly fine on my end, and now you guys are making me look like the crazy one. 🤔
I was paying off all my utility bills just two or three days ago and every single transaction went through without a hitch—no error messages, no alerts, nothing. 🤔

Just figured I'd throw that out there, in case anyone actually needs it.

I haven't personally run into that issue since our workload is basically just non-stop grinding, but I’m pretty sure the Republicans have already weighed in on it.
I can't quite recall the exact date or where I stumbled upon it, but it was definitely out there somewhere.
It had something to do with the ratio of material costs compared to the total invoice value... or something along those lines 🤔 , my memory isn't perfect.
Just take a look through the official opinions over on the Republican website.

What does your contract actually say about this specific job? There might be some fine print in there that clears things up.

We didn't go the simplified route back then because we weren't the direct contractors. We were actually subbing under a firm that had set themselves up specifically for VAT purposes, so honestly, we just got lucky 😁

So, basically, we didn't bill the construction services directly to Canada; we billed the main contractor from the States who had registered for VAT over there.
It’s a bit of a headache, I know, but that’s how it went down.

As for which countries follow these rules and which don't? You're probably better off checking with each country individually.
Just shoot an email to the Canadian tax authorities and ask—better safe than sorry.
I know for a fact France applies it, but I can't say for sure about Canada. Since we were just subs working under the main guy who handled the registration there, it never even crossed our desks.

vividotter912 said:I'm issuing an invoice for construction services performed in Mexico.

What exactly should I include in the notes:
the service is not taxable under Section 19 of the Tax Code, or
the tax liability is transferred per Section 19...

I know the invoice needs to be in dollars, but if I want to show the amount in euros as well, do I just use
the mid-market exchange rate?

Look, when you're dealing with real estate services, the tax hit happens right where the property sits.
In your case, that’s Canada.
So, unless they have some kind of simplified filing system—which varies wildly from one European Union country to the next—you're probably looking at having to register for VAT over there in Canada. You'll have to double-check their specific rules.

The bill needs to be in USD, but yeah, you can include the Euro amount using the mid-market rate from the invoice date.

You’re booking it just like you bought it from some local US corporation since they’re already registered for tax purposes here.
Just make sure you double-check whether you can actually claim that sales tax credit or not.

They’re probably just trying to get you logged into their system under some specific category or assign you a certain vendor status or whatever.
Just scan your business license or whatever paperwork you have as a small business owner and send it over so they can handle the translation themselves.

I haven't seen a thing. Not even the executives have received anything, which feels super sketchy to me.
So, I guess I’m stuck waiting until Monday to give them a call.
This has never happened before; usually, the email hits my inbox without fail. 🤔
