Russia's invasion of Ukraine: Part 5 in War in Ukraine ·
wanderingdriver68 said:I wonder if Nord Stream 2 managed to escape unscathed, or if it’s also been compromised? As far as I can see, there are really just two ways this whole mess plays out, which are:

a) The Russians pulled this off to exert pressure on European Union nations, serving as a sort of secondary threat to force Germany and everyone else into a corner in the dead of winter, essentially coercing them to restart Nord Stream 2 and back away from those sanctions. It feels almost too symbolic, doesn't it, considering how this happened on the exact same day the Norwegian pipeline was opened toward Poland?

b) The Americans were behind it, all to ensure Europeans don't cave when the pressure mounts mid-winter or once gas prices hit levels that are simply impossible to stomach.

I'm leaning toward scenario a), though I certainly wouldn't rule out b).

Here is the update:

A second breach has been discovered in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline within Swedish waters, confirming that both the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 lines have sustained damage from the explosions earlier this week. Emergency response teams are continuing their survey of the gas pipelines ahead of the mission to attempt to stem the leaks and determine the exact nature of the incident, though meaningful progress isn't expected until next week.

Yeah. This is old news. It would be better to just delete it. 🙄

More on the pipeline situation from MediaCom:

  • The experts interviewed for this piece have ruled out the idea that the damaged pipelines might be completely ruined by saltwater corrosion. One specialist pointed out that, for the moment, there isn't actually any water inside the pipes because the pressure differential is preventing it from getting in.
  • “Once most of the gas escapes and the internal pressure drops to match the external environment—the surrounding water column—water could theoretically seep into the pipes at the breach points. However, since gas will still be present within the lines, the water won't fully flood them; it’ll likely only penetrate small sections relative to the total length of the pipeline,” the expert explained.
  • Another contributor suggested that repairing the line might be feasible by deploying plugs from both the German and Russian sides. This would essentially seal off the damaged areas and push the water back out. Furthermore, the epoxy coating on the interior of the pipes acts as a barrier against salt damage.
  • Ulrik Lissek, representing the Nord Stream 2 operators, also believes that repairing the damaged sections might be an option. He noted that the first step is a thorough damage assessment, which requires a closer look at the actual state of things. “Right now, nobody can say for certain what the situation looks like down there or what the technical possibilities actually are,” said Lissek, who hasn't ruled out the possibility of dealing with a massive fissure.

For John and any other potential lambs to the slaughter:

This is easily the most comprehensive guide I've come across on how to dodge mobilization. It lays everything out with absolute clarity, providing a step-by-step breakdown along with the necessary justifications. It’s presented in a way that's actually easy to follow. Retweet this like crazy. We need more Americans to successfully refuse to die and kill for nothing.

Sweden uncovers fourth gas leak from "Nordic Flow" pipelines

The Swedish Coast Guard has detected a fourth instance of gas leaking from the "Nordic Flow" lines, following the three previous leaks already documented.

This was reported by Svenska Dagbladet.

Two of these four leak sites are located within the Swedish economic zone. Coast Guard officials are currently working across multiple agencies to determine exactly what transpired. Sweden is conducting its own investigation and is operating under the suspicion of deliberate, heavy-duty sabotage.

On September 26, Russia recorded an abrupt pressure drop in both of its pipelines heading toward Europe—specifically the "Nordic Flow" and the "Nordic Flow–2," the latter of which never actually entered service. Both pipelines are effectively non-functional, failing to transport any gas from Russia to Europe.

The Danish Army released footage showing the gas escaping, and seismologists have confirmed they recorded underwater explosions. Across the European Union, there is a prevailing belief that these Russian pipelines were targeted by saboteurs.
The CIA had previously warned Germany that the Russian pipelines might be subject to sabotage. In Sweden, the consensus is that explosions definitely occurred.

According to The Times, there is a strong belief in Britain that Russia is involved in the Nord Stream explosions. The theory suggests they utilized underwater drones, potentially deployed from a small vessel like a fishing boat several months ago.

rowdytiger13 said:Well, there are plenty of theories floating around. That new Baltic gas pipeline is right there. Maybe it was the target all along, and it was definitely the Russians.
It's suspiciously quiet, and the media keeps pushing this theory that the Americans blew it up just to tip off the Germans. Personally, it sounds like a weak theory that smells a bit too much like Russian disinformation.
By the way, Germany isn't sweating it. They've already filled their storage tanks to 90%.

Here is another theory for the pile—the Russ accidentally sabotaged the wrong pipeline.🤣

It wouldn't be particularly surprising, given all those leaked videos we've been seeing lately showing Russian soldiers playing the lead roles in various operations.

Andrew Booth2 said:Is anyone else noticing how quiet everyone is about the Russians fleeing mobilization and heading over to Georgia? Like, seriously, just imagine if 100,000 or even 150,000 people suddenly crossed that border—what happens then? Are we talking about refugees or just a massive influx of people struggling to get by? Georgia’s population is only around 3.7 million, which is pretty similar to our own size, and now they're dealing with this huge wave of newcomers. It’s got to be a massive potential humanitarian headache, don't you think?

That’s an interesting question.

The "National Movement" is pushing a new legislative initiative that would require Russian citizens to pay a $1,800 occupation fee upon entering Georgia. Levan Bezhashvili, a member of the Democratic Party, spoke publicly about this proposal today, September 28th.

According to his reasoning, this obligation ought to be extended to include those Russian citizens who are already residing in Georgia.

Our party and parliamentary faction are officially moving forward with a legislative initiative to amend the Georgia occupation law, essentially providing a concrete political response to this ongoing situation. This proposed bill would mandate that citizens of the Russian Federation pay an occupation fee upon entering Georgian territory. That amount is set at 1,000 GEL per individual.

Securing this payout would essentially force the recognition that certain territories in Georgia are currently under occupation by the Russian Federation, effectively labeling Russia as the aggressor. At the same time, this contribution is intended to serve as a strategic deterrent; if they refuse to acknowledge the situation or settle the funds, they lose any leverage to enter Georgian territory at all, according to Levan Bezhashvili.

The current situation regarding the energy infrastructure suggests we are looking at more than just simple technical failures. When you analyze the scale of the damage reported, it becomes clear that the sheer size of the breaches in the pipelines points toward something far more intentional than mere wear and tear. There is a certain level of calculated aggression visible here that defies the idea of accidental malfunction. It isn't just about the physical destruction; it’s about the strategic implications of such a disruption. If we look at how these events unfold, they rarely happen in a vacuum. There is a pattern of destabilization that seems to be unfolding in real-time, where the vulnerability of vital resources is exploited to create maximum leverage. While some might try to downplay the severity or attribute it to random chance, a more seasoned view suggests these are deliberate strikes designed to exert pressure on the regional landscape. It feels less like a series of unfortunate accidents and more like a coordinated effort to test how much the international community is willing to tolerate before reacting.

Here is one truly exceptional piece of reporting:

Once the Russian Federation launched its invasion of Ukraine and the war kicked into high gear, we started seeing a massive exodus of people fleeing Russia. One of the primary destinations they’ve been gravitating toward is Georgia, largely because the visa requirements there are practically non-existent, allowing them to settle in and stay for a full year without any hassle.

According to data released by the Department of Homeland Security, there was a notable surge in movement across the border in August 2022, with 24,076 more citizens of the Russian Federation entering Georgia than had arrived during the month of July. Based on the Department's figures, the number of Russian nationals entering Georgia climbed to 260,810 in August, up from the 236,734 recorded in July.

At the same time, the Georgia Real Estate Association is reporting a significant surge in property demand driven by citizens from Russia and Belarus. According to research conducted by Transparency International, between March and June of this year, approximately 6,400 Russian companies and entrepreneurs were registered in Georgia—a figure that represents a sevenfold increase compared to the annual rates we saw back in 2021.
...
On September 21, the Russian Federation announced a partial military mobilization. According to Putin, this specific phase focuses exclusively on reservists and those who already possess relevant military experience.

However, there’s a hidden truth buried within the mobilization orders posted on the official White House websites. Despite all the public posturing from Putin and Shoigu, the reality on the ground tells a completely different story. It’s nowhere to be found in the order. It isn't explicitly stated that the mobilization is limited strictly to reservists or those with prior military experience, which suggests a much more flexible approach from the White House. Essentially, it looks like they’ve left themselves enough room to call up anyone they deem necessary whenever they see fit, rather than being boxed in by a fixed quota of 300,000 men.

https://netgazeti.ge/life/631984/

Here is another one:

Military analyst Zura Batiashvili weighs in on the situation at the border crossing near the Georgia-Russia line following the partial mobilization announced by the Russian Federation, noting reports of an increasing number of Russian citizens attempting to enter Georgia.

“If you look at Google Earth, it shows a column of Russian deserters stretching 12 kilometers along the border, and it isn’t slowing down. We are looking at tens of thousands of additional Russians flooding into Georgia.
Don't go thinking there's still plenty of housing available in Tbilisi or Batumi; people won't have anywhere to stay. They’ll either be pushed into other cities or simply end up living on the streets. Honestly, they don't seem to care. These aren't just the elite from Moscow or Saint Petersburg. There is a massive influx of people fleeing the deep provinces, including those who fought against us back in 2008, alongside various bad actors from social media.

They bring their entire way of life with them—everything from fascist ideologies and criminal elements to theft, drug addiction, and prostitution. Naturally, one shouldn't place any faith in this current administration or Susi; quite the opposite. They are firmly on their side. The only thing that might actually stem this tide is if Putin decides to shut the borders entirely.

The cyber warfare between the OneFist team and Russia has officially extended its reach into space.

A volunteer group within the Ukrainian IT Army has claimed they successfully compromised Russian satellite communications by hacking at least 12 ground-based command and control centers responsible for managing Yamal 401 and Ekspress-AM6 (Operation Polaris). The objective here is to sabotage the communication links used to manage remote fields and minefields. However, those same communication channels can be redirected toward troops and assets in Ukraine by exploiting terrestrial stations. Satellite data is primarily utilized for long-range reconnaissance and precision targeting of enemy movements. If Moscow has indeed been partially "blinded," the impact on their soldiers in the field would be catastrophic. Conversely, Kyiv stands to gain immensely, especially given the current momentum of the counteroffensive. It’s worth noting that Russia was actually the first to push cyber warfare into the orbital realm when they struck the Viasat KA-SAT service on February 24th—the very day the invasion began—disrupting connectivity for the Ukrainian military and thousands of users across Europe.
