What's the point of required reading? in Students & Teens ·
Larry Walker24 said:signature

We should be doing the classics in 4th grade because they actually have themes that spark decent debates.

My favorite thing is when a colleague tells me that students won't bother with anything that isn't going to show up on the SATs. Everything boils down to "is this on the test?" for them.

And honestly? I dare anyone to raise their hand and admit they've written a single essay since they graduated.

almost everyone on Reddit

Peter Doyle2 said:Just to circle back to this one more time; it isn't about whether "some" kid finds it boring. The real issue is that 99.9% of people don't find required reading "boring"—they find it unbearable. If you ran a poll among 30 or 40-year-olds, I bet the results regarding what they read and their opinions on it would be pretty negative—not to mention among the younger generation.
The thing is, you have to analyze the content, build arguments, and characterize the figures—you have to understand them, their motives, and why they act the way they do; but a lot of these works feel completely foreign to kids today. Raskolnikov isn't even the biggest hurdle here, but something like Moby Dick...
In my view, what I wrote above is basically the whole point of assigned reading—it's a work we can argue about if we're dissecting it or writing essays on its characters. But that kind of approach requires actually grasping what was read. How much can a teenager truly grasp about Dunda Maroje?

It's different for everyone—one person might get 25%, another maybe 45%, and someone else could hit 95%.

And since that's how it works, grades usually run on that 1 to 5 scale. 😁

But then again, if they don't even bother to read it at all, I guess everyone's understanding of Dunda Maroje is just going to stay at 0%.

It seems there's such a palpable, cutting level of animosity toward one particular member here—it’s almost thick enough to touch—and you all seem hell-bent on turning this entire thread into a coordinated effort to lynch and persecute them.

Honestly, it’s pretty uncalled for.
Just let the moderators handle things. If you see a post that breaks the rules, use the report button and move on.
If you genuinely believe the moderation team isn't doing their job effectively, you know how the process works; feel free to take it up with them directly if you can actually manage to be civil about it.

By acting like this, you're really just souring everyone else's perception of who you people are.

Honestly, the guy is just rude to everyone he meets, and his posts? They're pretty much devoid of any logic, accuracy, or even a shred of common sense.

So, I guess it’s not really surprising that people are getting worked up about him. Calling it "persecution" might be a bit much, maybe, but it feels more like people are just calling for the kind of sanctions that should have happened ages ago if we want these discussions to actually make sense to a normal person. I mean, as long as someone keeps treating everyone around them like garbage, things are going to get messy. The root of the problem is pretty obvious, don't you think?

Nah.

Go check out this thread. This one right here. It explains exactly how everything went down. 😁
Straight to the point!

I guess I’ve just never really been the type to get into petty little jabs or constant back-and-forth trolling. It’s just not my vibe, you know? Maybe I'm just wired differently, but I’d much rather keep things positive!

Wait, what? Seriously?

So, what's with this sneaky little way of phrasing things? Like, using that whole "certain big-name users on the forum would surely notice" line to make it sound like this is some massive, recurring issue. It’s such a weird tactic! I mean, we literally just talked about this right here, didn't we? We agreed it was a total outlier—like, maybe one single post out of fifty. The other 49 posts were completely different! Plus, everyone else on the forum was actually calling out that one specific person for doing exactly that. So, I guess it feels a bit dishonest to act like it's a widespread trend when it was really just one person being difficult, right? 😁

Honey, I think it’d be best if you stuck to stuff that actually makes sense to talk about here—basically keeping things on-topic, like the moderation of this thread.
Regarding all that stress you're feeling over whether people accept certain things or those MK photos, maybe just start your own new thread? Everything there has already been covered here, probably way more than enough times. Let's try not to derail the topic.
Also, maybe consider the possibility that you might be the one in the wrong here, since you're kind of picking fights for no reason. You could have easily just made a totally normal post in the thread earlier if something like what Jason Richardson5 was thinking was bothering you so much.

Thanks! 😁

I mean, I can't say you weren't being fair and decent, I guess.

But look, as a total veteran of this forum (we're talking 10 years😳), I've been posting in way too many threads for too long to not notice... and I'm telling you, the vibe in your group just isn't comfortable. There’s this constant, sneaky kind of mocking going on—it's hard to even put into words—but honestly, I learned the hard way how bad communication can get. The tension in there? Man, you could cut it with a knife. It's like a massive elephant in the room.🤷

And it's not just happening to the new people, either.🙂

That's just a bummer.

I honestly think this whole thread is just a perfect example of how this group constantly, and kind of sneakily, shuts out new people and refuses to give them a fair shot.🙂

Look,
Everyone you’re calling a "group" right now? To me, they’re all just new members. And if you think about it, every single one of them was once a newcomer too, back when they were first joining in. 😁

But hey, it's totally your call to do whatever you want, so why even bother pushing yourself into this if it doesn't feel right?

Maybe just find a different group that actually fits you better.

I was just pointing out how things work around here—Miaan does it too.🙂

You aren't.

Both of you are talking about comments on those MK photos, which—if you look at the Chive thread—are being described as saying something completely different about Jason Richardson5, or Dct saying they're nesmijesni, and so on.
And we're only talking about the last couple of days (or maybe both happened today?). You don't even have to dig that deep to see it.

And then you still come to me to complain about it.

I guess you guys just don't really have a clue what you're talking about. 😁

Maria Johnson said:I'm not the subject here, true. I'm just pointing out how everyone seems to be ganging up on one person.

Oh, give me a break. 😁You're totally spinning this.

You aren't giving an example; you're just showing how "someone characterized you" one way or another. There's a huge difference there, I guess.

And honestly, who even cares?
If you care, well, this isn't exactly the right forum to vent about how you want everyone to like you.

but you said it yourself,

Whatever I might have said, I think I said it right, and I'm telling you again—don't turn the conversation back onto yourself.
And please, don't come complaining to me about what someone else thinks of you. 😁

Just be an adult, stay strong, and be confident in who you are!

Maria Johnson said:I mean, what part of this was even passive-aggressive?

Quoted text.
Or rather, the actual post content. I didn't quote it because it’s sitting right above mine. 😁

it basically always boiled down to that MK girl, multiple times, regardless of how much she tried to hold her own.

That’s just how people talk over there, I guess.

Looking at all the posts on this topic here, I don't think a single one is even remotely similar to what’s already been linked twice in this thread. Right?

And looking back through old discussions, nothing comes close, except maybe for that one thing from Jason Richardson5.

But honestly, that one exception doesn't change a single thing about the whole situation, and it definitely doesn't touch any of the arguments we're actually making here. It's not relevant at all.
You're just being distracting for no reason.

Plus, even Jack Ward82—who is actually part of that "group" and is now banned specifically for that exact post (and stuff like that before) —said it was totally out of line and unnecessary.

So, first off, please stop spreading misinformation, and second, stop trying to make this about yourself. 😁

I really don't care if you posted something somewhere, or if most of the cultural crew over there did too, but you're really picking a fight with someone who isn't even involved (though shouldn't everyone feel the same way?), and now you're dragging it out needlessly. You aren't the center of this discussion.

Nathan Turner3 said:I totally agree that this needs to happen. Seriously, everyone else feels the same way too. If you're dealing with those trolls who are just jumping in specifically to be rude and obnoxious, please just report them to the moderators right away. And hey, if you do that and still don't see any reaction, you can always come to me after. I’ll have a chat with the mods and we can figure out if someone actually deserves a penalty or whatever.
I feel like this issue keeps popping up because some people just flat-out refuse to post a photo—any kind of photo, really. It’s almost like they’re doing it out of pure spite, just because they can. And honestly? There isn't much anyone can do about it. If those types of posts really bother you, I guess you should just ignore them. I know that specific chat has its own set of unwritten rules and vibes, but yeah... maybe it's just best to look the other way.

Yeah, totally. 👍

Just so nobody gets the wrong idea based on what dustypilot11 or anyone else might be complaining about, it’s not like there's this massive, ongoing disaster happening with the photo. It’s definitely not like we have a constant issue every single time. I mean, honestly, it’s probably only happened maybe twice? And that's out of like twenty different threads. So yeah, it's really not that big of a deal!

So, yeah, I mean, honestly? It’s such a tiny, tiny little thing. Like, seriously, it's barely even worth mentioning, I guess!

That’s not even the main issue, though... I mean, that one post isn't the real headache. It's those other fifty posts that are actually the problem, I guess.

Tvuk is pretty much always around here, you know? It doesn't really make sense to give him updates since he's basically seen everything from the very beginning, though I guess he’s just been handling things the way we've all been talking about in this thread so far.

So, honestly? Because nobody's actually following the rules—and since these are basically just your own internal guidelines anyway—I don't see how anyone is actually going to get sanctioned. I mean, it just doesn't make sense, right?

I mean, honestly, nobody is even asking the mods to go after a cultural crew like that.

Honestly, we just didn't want anyone messing with our vibe or ruining the conversation, that’s all! It’s totally normal for the cultural crew to speak up when they feel that way. Nothing crazy, really—we can just leave it at that and move on.

Look, I'm just saying—it's not like I'm asking anyone to go out and do something illegal or break any laws, you know? There's absolutely nothing shady about what I'm suggesting! It’s totally above board, I swear! 😁

Look, I guess at the end of the day, if you actually want to fit in somewhere or build a connection, you’ve gotta put in a little bit of work. It’s just how it goes, right? So, like, if someone is being stubborn just for the sake of it and refuses to even show a tiny bit of effort—not even a basic photo of the sneakers they're wearing—then honestly, maybe just don't bother talking to them. Just stop communicating with that person, and boom, you've basically solved your own problem!

And seriously, please stop circling around the moderation stuff—it’s just a waste of time and you're basically just asking to get flagged for nothing.

👍

dustypilot11 said:Oh my gosh, come on guys! You all look so incredibly cute when you team up like this to jump on Daniel Gomez10.

Look, nobody is actually attacking Daniel Gomez10! We were just pointing out—in a totally respectful, cultural crew kind of way, I swear—some specific gaps in how the moderation is being handled.

Just some normal conversation.

This is how people act when they’re being polite in the chat. A few of you have basically hijacked the whole thing with these constant new vendettas. Some individuals just go on "rampages," mostly in posts where they aren't even quoting anyone—either being super passive-aggressive or just straight-up insulting people—and then they turn around and act like the "newbies" are the ones at fault.

Just so you know, it was the exact same Jack Ward82 over there defending Daniel Gomez10, telling Jason Richardson5 that the comment was out of line.
Maybe give that some thought.

It’s not like we all share one single brain, and there isn't really this big "you guys over there" mentality like you're implying.
You've got 30 different people (men and women!) who are all going to have their own unique perspectives and opinions.

And as for everything else, if the cultural crew on the thread just isn't your vibe in general, then maybe don't post there?

Nobody really gives a damn about one or two rule violations; the real issue is everything else surrounding the topic you just shut down.
Because the moderator’s constant mishandling of the situation is what actually caused this. It's not just some random 30 forum users acting up.

It's all laid out right there in the thread you just closed.
I honestly think we should be looking at the actual root causes here.

When 30 veteran members of a thread all feel the exact same way—and they didn't even talk to each other first—it's definitely not a coincidence or just noise.

Maria Johnson said:honestly, they didn't really feel like writing much when I was there, and one time everything just turned into a total mess.

Well, okay then, I guess... should you really be forcing the cultural crew to post just because you happen to be hanging out there? And honestly, how does that even have anything to do with moderation? 😁

You're tripping.

I honestly feel like just because someone like Jason Richardson5 or whoever else had an opinion, you can't really take that and apply it to everyone else.

Maybe try listing out the other 20 regulars around here and then go ahead and search through to see if anyone else ever talked to you like that.
I mean, nobody really cared about it anyway. 😁

Betty Jones32 said:I totally agree with everything said here, and I really want to stress these two undeniable facts.

And if we look at the bigger picture and the reasons behind it... honestly, us "old-timers" are just getting fed up with these "newcomers" who aren't even really new, but they show up and start talking down to everyone or having these super rude conversations.

Amen

It feels like we have two possible ways this plays out. Luckily, the mods don't have a ton of work, but when they do, they somehow always pick the worst way to handle it.

1) Someone new jumps in.
They don't try to fit in, they’re disrespectful to everyone, and they basically ruin the whole vibe.
The cultural crew (or at least those trying to keep things controlled—if you can call it that! 😁 but hey, keeping it polite and justified) points out that this behavior isn't okay.
Then the mods play the victim role a bit, and once things escalate, instead of dealing with the actual troublemaker, they just end up lecturing "everyone." It’s like, suddenly we aren't allowed to talk anymore because now the rules are being strictly enforced.
But it's applied to "everyone."
And just like that, the casual conversation is dead.

But there’s another way this goes.
2) Someone new jumps in.
They won't show even a shred of basic decency, they antagonize the group, and they act like they came here to "teach everyone how it's done" or "educate the community," etc. (those are direct quotes, by the way).
The group again points out that you actually need to socialize normally within a community.
And the mods tell the person causing problems, "Yeah, okay, but hey, maybe don't argue with everyone and put everyone down like that."

So, honestly, if we didn't have mods at all, it might actually be better than this circus. They never seem to catch the Type 2 situation, and (probably both) they always default to Type 1.

It’s just not right. Just choose the better option. It shouldn't be that hard.

And instead of settling things internally, they end up pushing the people who don't want any drama or arguments on the PŽK straight toward the PŽK.
It's kind of like when the new American family law comes along and forces everything into court, refusing to allow any reasonable, agreed-upon solution without a judge involved.😁

Personally, I usually try not to get too involved with people acting that way; I'll give them a heads-up, and if they want to listen, fine, if not, whatever.
But even for me, it’s annoying to see someone insulting and belittling the rest of the group. And regarding that, the mods were just, frankly, pretty weak.

Just because the rules have changed doesn't mean there aren't legal consequences (otherwise, they would have revoked the degree), but that doesn't change the fact that the work itself was legitimate. That's what the statement says, plain and simple.

Yep

And there's honestly a whole lot more written in there too. I guess they're even trying to lean on his late mentor for support... probably just because he isn't around to defend himself anymore. 😁
