China Grand Prix in Formula 1 ·

The earthquake hit Qinghai up in northern Tibet, while Shanghai is all the way on the eastern coast (assuming we don't count Taiwan as Chinese 😁).
However, I don't think this is actually about the distance involved. It’s more about the reality that one part of the country is facing a humanitarian disaster with hundreds dead, while the other part is busy hosting The Great Circus. If this were any other nation, the ethics of holding such a race would likely be called into question .

But we are talking about China. What does a hundred deaths matter to them? They’ve been tearing down people's homes just to make sure they can host the Olympics in a specific district of the city. This tiny fraction—basically zero percent of the population—shouldn't even pose an issue for the race.

If memory serves, the last time we saw a start like that was at Le Mans back in 1969. There's actually a clip where you can see Ickx casually strolling toward his car while everyone else is sprinting, and he ended up winning by about a second or so. It's quite a sight to watch him just calmly walking up to the cockpit.
On a separate note, that suggestion regarding limiting pit crews to just two mechanics is actually quite sound. I have toyed with similar ideas myself; it would significantly diminish the strategic advantage gained from frequent pit stops and limit the ability to over-engineer tactics. It should remain an exception reserved strictly for safety emergencies, or perhaps once per race at most.

Some teams were already utilizing those illuminated lollipop systems quite some time ago.😉 If that is what you were implying.

slyviper5 said:I find Brawn GP’s current look quite striking—mostly because that loud, obnoxious green clashes so violently with the pure white, especially since they barely have any sponsors. If you look back at the old BAR days, they had a much more cohesive aesthetic with the Lucky Strike branding, and let's not even forget how bizarre Honda was when they decided to wrap their car in a literal world map...

That was certainly strange, but I believe that specific color scheme was intended to promote environmental awareness. In my estimation, though, the most absurd livery ever seen wasn't from NASCAR, but rather from prototype racing, when Porsche painted their 917 pink and actually labeled the different cuts of meat directly on the chassis. slyviper5 said:He drove both Maserati and Mercedes-Benz, and if you’re looking at 1955, that checks out. His debut was back in '51 and his final race wasn't until '57, so during '55, he would have been behind the wheel of both a Maserati and a Mercedes...

So, the timeline seems solid; it's likely him...

I'm aware he drove for Mercedes, but for the Grand Prix in the UK, he was in a Maserati, which is where this photo was taken. The real issue is the lack of archival photos online—there is almost nothing available—so I can't definitively confirm if it's actually him without more visual evidence.

Could it be Peter Collins? 🤷
The photo is definitely from the 1955 VN in Britain 😉

I initially assumed this was taken at Indianapolis Motor Speedway based on the background, though I wasn't entirely certain; however, I'd bet anything it was 1955. Everyone else pictured is part of the Mercedes-Benz crew, whereas Collins was driving for Ferrari at the time—though he did win the Indy 500 that year while driving for them alongside Stirling Moss.
I actually found another driver who looks even more like the individual in this shot than Collins does, which is André Simon. The trouble is, there's such a dearth of high-quality photos of him online that I can't say for sure. Still, he was also driving a Ferrari at Indianapolis.

How on earth am I supposed to delete this now?

I stumbled upon this photograph, and frankly, I’m struggling to identify everyone in the frame. I would appreciate it if someone could assist me in identifying the gentleman behind the wheel here🤷. For those who might need a refresher on the rest of the group, we have Rudolf, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Kling, and Alfred Neubauer; the individual positioned at the bottom left is Luigi Taruffi. If anyone can shed light on the man on the right, please do—he likely has some connection to Mercedes-Benz, given that everyone else in the shot does.

The Eagle T1G is, without any shadow of a doubt, the most stunning car I have ever laid eyes on.
