Sci-Fi or Fantasy: The ultimate debate in Movies ·

Look, I get it—it’s fiction. But there's a difference between just plain old fiction and actual Sci-Fi, you know? It doesn't necessarily qualify as science fiction just because it's made up. 🍿🙂

I mean, think about it—all those pieces of space junk orbiting Earth or floating through the cosmos following specific paths over time—influenced by Gravity or whatever else... that kind of stuff already falls under the umbrella of science fantasy.

I mean, honestly—the second you even dip a toe into outer space, you're firmly in the realm of Sci-Fi. ☕

Sci-Fi starts the moment they send a medical engineer out there just to fix a telescope.

Hehe.

You're constantly veering off into off-topic territory—whether we're talking about Gravity or 2001: A Space Odyssey or whatever else. Honestly, maybe I should be the one giving you a heads-up instead of the other way around!

That’s just how I saw the movie, okay? You’ve gotta be able to pick up on all those hidden messages and metaphors that point toward it being that way.
That’s the whole beauty of cinema—you can look at it through so many different lenses.
And hey, if I decide to interpret 2001: A Space Odyssey as overrated garbage, that's my call! ☕
Both movies are Sci-Fi anyway. 😉

You’re out here trying to argue that all the tech in this movie is basically what we have right now—I mean, I don't even know if they ever explicitly state the timeline, but it could be the near future, or maybe...

But look, it’s Sci-Fi because those asteroids hitting her? They’re actually cloaked alien ships. And these aliens are essentially some kind of God—supernatural beings who showed up just to put Sandra through the wringer, testing her to see if she can actually process the loss of her daughter. Even George Clooney is part of the setup; when she thinks she's just imagining him, he’s actually been hardwired into her brain to push her to keep fighting, move past the grief, and just live her life.
That’s why everything feels so "conveniently" unrealistic—like how you can just surf through space using a fire extinguisher.
Plus, some of these aliens are basically betting on whether she survives their little tests or not. Some help her out with cryogenics while others just watch, all because she isn't even really in space—she’s trapped in some kind of cosmic simulation they can manipulate however they want. There you go—made-up alien tech and pure Sci-Fi at its finest!

I know everyone loses their minds whenever the holy grail, Odyssey, gets brought up, so I just had to jump in.

wiredraven82 can explain it until they're blue in the face if they want, but Gravity is a Sci-Fi movie. Period. It’s got scientists out in space, space stations, asteroid belts, buttons and toggles inside shuttles—all that stuff. I’m intentionally writing it this way so a sixth grader could actually understand me, lol.

Sure, you could argue it's an action drama set in a Sci-Fi setting, but even then, by my definition of what Sci-Fi is, it still counts.

Movies aren't always one single thing—they're usually a mix, like Action/Comedy/Sci-Fi or Horror / Fantasy, and so on...

Then I guess 2001: A Space Odyssey isn't even Sci-Fi either🤷 based on your logic

It was originally meant to be this massive trilogy—like, the second installment was supposed to be the one where it finally turns into a full-blown, classic superhero movie. Honestly? I still think those first two films of his are his absolute best. Everything else he’s done lately just doesn't hit the same for me... though, I gotta admit, I actually really dig The Village.

I’ve gotta say, *Signs* is such a wild ride in certain parts—it’s got that one absolutely bone-chilling scene that stays with you. It isn't exactly a masterpiece, but it definitely isn't trash either. It just kind of sits right in that middle ground for me.
