Edward Sanchez72 said:I don't view this kind of coaching as just lecturing or showing off. I see it more as necessary communication between two people from different eras trying to bridge their knowledge gaps... without it, things are much harder. I suppose I'm quite open to suggestions; they might actually be useful. Since I view it this way, I tend to speak up if I notice someone is doing something less efficiently than they probably could.

Eric Jackson43 said:I enjoy demonstrating things, but I always worry about being incorrect. Personally, I usually mention that one should probably check with someone more experienced first.

I appreciate your line of reasoning. 👍
That is somewhat how I approach it as well...

When you teach someone, you are also teaching yourself. I suppose you end up testing your own knowledge as much as theirs. Maybe that's just how it works.
As the old saying goes: even a smart man can learn something from a fool. 😬

It is interesting how some things just come naturally to certain people—like not shrugging their shoulders during specific movements, for instance—so they don't even think to correct them while training. Meanwhile, others might struggle with things that most people do instinctively. I suppose that’s why I find working with a wide variety of clients so engaging; you start noticing those tiny, subtle details that might otherwise be overlooked.

Justin Watson58 said:...teaching martial arts is a thankless gig. It's rare for someone to hand over their life's work, assuming it actually holds value. You generally have to prove yourself first, and you probably need some level of talent just to grasp the nuances of what's happening... I don't see myself handing over the core principles to just anyone...

It’s because of people who don't teach "completely" that we have so many self-proclaimed "masters" today, along with students who don't know any better and waste their time training under them.
Bad practice.
Very bad.

Robin Palmer3 said:Your assessment isn't wrong... so, when are you coming by for training?😁

Heh...
I would love to come.
I really would.
And I will.
Someday.
Right now, I'm stuck without a car, and I don't have one.
The alternative is 31 miles biking (it's a 25-mile ride to the gym and 25 miles back), and I'm likely not in enough shape to survive the workout, let alone 16 miles the ride home.
😢

Anyway... does the club stay open during the summer?
Tutoring help wanted in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
Do you enjoy sharing what you know, or do you prefer being the one who learns?
Would you ever consider opening your own club?

When I find myself working with someone who puts in significantly less effort than I do, I can't help but start explaining things or demonstrating techniques. It gets a bit awkward when you try that at a new gym where you're the newcomer; you risk coming off as arrogant... 😬
Basically... if anyone—say, a friend—shows even a hint of interest, I immediately feel the urge to start teaching and showing them the ropes.

How do you all handle it?
(I have a feeling that Robin Palmer3 would probably try to teach people even in his sleep. But perhaps that is just my impression. 👍 )

Actually, I suppose... it wasn't just a simple piece of wood. It looked more like some sort of wrapped sample up there...

I seem to recall someone posting a link here for a shop—a local one, if memory serves—that sold bokken and training gear. They were designed so the handles looked just like a standard katana's, and I think the "blade" was either wrapped in some sort of material or just painted, though I'm not entirely certain.

Could someone perhaps remind me of the name of that shop?
😢I can't find it.

I suppose they put Split right there in the headline for you :P

Amy Long10 said:Hey everyone,

I wanted to pick your brains on something. I spent ten years in the pool, but I eventually hit a wall and quit—mostly because I just wasn't feeling it anymore, and honestly, my college schedule made it impossible to keep up. Now, I’m looking to get back into something recreational, maybe basketball or water polo, but let's be real, I'm probably too old for that now. 🙂 Basically, I'm thinking about picking up a martial art like kickboxing or Jiu Jitsu. I'm not looking to compete or anything; I just want to stay in shape and not let myself get totally soft. I need sessions around 8 PM since I spend most of my day stuck at the university, and I'm located somewhere on the east side of town—think areas like the suburbs near the stadium or the eastern residential districts.

Thanks..

You might want to check out profightstore.com and look through their directory (it's the first link in my sibling's post).
😉

Well... there were some quite inexpensive gloves at Eurobike, though they've already sold out.
Generally speaking, you don't see them much around town.
As for leg gear, they only had Kickers; no shin guards.
They weren't actually any cheaper than what you'd find elsewhere, I suppose.

Gloves:

At Pride, prices start from $100 upwards (assuming they have stock).
Over at Pro Fight Store, you can find these for $90.
And those for $93.

Those first ones seem to suit me better... at least in the sizes they had available.

Shin guards:

The Shin models (also at Pro Fight Store) range from $30 up to $83.
They have plenty of other models in between. You might want to check their website.

And at Pride, they go from 100 to $67 (though I'm not certain if they have them in the shop).

It’s just a small group. I suppose that’s how it goes.
I suppose things are about to get a bit messy at the fair. Maybe even a little chaotic.

I suppose those two links should be enough for a couple of rounds of experimenting and studying.😉

Mark Hill2 said:So, I was thinking... maybe someone with actual expertise could weigh in here—you know, someone who actually knows their stuff—about which exercises are truly the best for getting rid of belly fat... and more importantly, which ones actually speed up the process? I mean, does it even work that way? And honestly, are there any little tricks to pull off... like wearing shapewear, or maybe some kind of compression gear... I don't really know!

Unfortunately, there aren't any shortcuts.
If there were, I suppose someone would have already found a way to monetize them.
Anyone peddling "magic" solutions or specialized pills is likely just taking advantage of people's optimism.
Targeting just the belly area is, practically speaking, impossible.
You really just have to lower your overall body fat percentage.
How? Well, I guess you could start here:

Check out this link.
There are plenty of people there who understand nutrition and similar topics quite well.
It isn't just bodybuilders on that site.
Maybe read through the FAQs, and feel free to ask if anything seems unclear.

If you find these topics interesting, you might want to visit this link.

It essentially boils down to a few things:
-Avoid eating anything for about two hours before bed.
-Try eating more frequent, smaller meals (perhaps five or six instead of the usual two or three).
-Eat intelligently (avoid junk food; focus on things like Omega-3s).
-Consistent exercise helps speed up the process, I think.

You can find much more detail regarding all of this in that first link above.
All you really need is a great deal of willpower and enough time for your body to adjust to a new routine.

And, well... good luck.

I can't say I know much about the local scene in Los Angeles, but if you don't find anything worthwhile, I suppose you could just order delivery from here.

link might be a good addition...

edit: lol... just realized how old this thread is... I just clicked "mark all as read."

Sandra Williams70 said:Read the whole thread. I’m looking to pick up a skill that works both the mind and the body—Wing Chun seems like a solid option. Any other suggestions? Also, where can I find decent Kung Fu training?
There are:

"Istok" Wing Chun Kung Fu Club

I’d suggest Wing Chun.
The group from those Lok Yiu clubs seems decent. (They're the ones at wingchun.us, right?)
The methodology should probably yield results fairly quickly.

I don't know much about this Safira school, but it feels a bit cultish to me.
As do those Lotus groups...

I suppose they might fall under the category of www.wingchun.hr, so perhaps you could look into things there.

This whole thing gets pretty complicated if you haven't been following along from the very beginning. I guess it's just a bit much for someone coming in late.

Since I'm guessing who made that remark about Americans being able to charge in without any fear...

I can confirm that wearing a helmet during a high-quality slip doesn't offer much protection; you still take quite a jarring impact.
You might feel more secure, but I suppose the same applies to your opponent. They’ll likely feel just as confident, which means they might be willing to take more risks.
It’s arguably harder to take someone down when they're wearing a helmet. I guess there's just less spatial awareness or something. Maybe.
Pankration lacks grit, though I suppose it does come with a million other restrictions... particularly when it comes to striking.

I honestly can't stand these kinds of arguments where neither side is willing to admit they’re both somewhat right. I guess I've just heard far too much of this during _ing __un.

They really are. 👎 It seems like there might have been a typo or an incomplete thought in your message. I am not quite sure what you intended to convey. Perhaps you could clarify?

You can actually configure a sound recorder to treat the output as the input instead of using a microphone, which lets you record whatever is playing through your speakers. I guess the only catch is that the standard Windows Sound Recorder has a one-minute limit.
