There is something about this time of year that just gets my blood pressure up. Every year, it’s the same cycle of watching guys walk into camp looking like they're in peak condition, only to see the news cycle turn into a disaster zone within two weeks.
I was reading some takes earlier about roster depth and it really got me thinking about how much "insurance" a team actually needs. It feels like modern sports management is just a constant game of whack-a-mole. You think you've found that one reliable piece to anchor your strategy, and then suddenly, a freak injury or a sudden loss of momentum turns your whole plan upside down.
It makes me wonder if we overvalue individual talent too much. If a team builds their entire identity around one or two superstars, aren't they basically just building a house of cards? I’d much rather see a squad that’s built with a massive safety net, even if it means they aren't as "flashy" on paper.
How much do you guys value depth versus star power when you're looking at a roster? Is it better to have one guy who can win you a game, or five guys who can keep you from losing it?
