ETA citing the Mexico precedent
in World ·
What’s the actual issue here? We need a precedent to finally settle the national questions facing various groups across the US and the world. Is every single Basque person responsible for what ETA does? Of course not. There’s no such thing as a "terrorist nation"—there are only terrorist organizations that take it upon themselves to act as the sole voice for people who have no one else representing them. Sure, they bear the responsibility for the deaths caused, but it's on all of us to help those who deserve their own sovereignty actually achieve it. As far as I'm concerned, places like Northern Ireland, the Basque Country, Catalonia, or Scotland arguably have even stronger claims to separatism than Mexico does; it's just a coincidence that the Albanians are in a position where they might set the precedent. At this rate, I suspect Mexico will declare independence, while the Basques, Irish, Kurds, Abkhazians, Chechens (it’s funny how the Russians always seem to dodge mentioning them), and others will just continue to be treated like black sheep. Personally, I think the Scots have slightly better odds in the long run.
