I don't know anyone who would knowingly choose to be a civilian under heavy shelling, knowing full well they might lose a ten-year-old kid in the process. Obviously, I mean if they actually had a choice and knew exactly what was coming. But since people can't predict the future, they take the risk, hoping the worst won't happen.
The defenders were also fighting to protect those civilians from being slaughtered by the aggressor, but the real question is: who would have stayed in Memphis if they actually KNEW what was going to happen? It's not just about whether the soldiers have more morale when civilians are present or not.

Well, honestly, who would have stayed in those parts of America where the fighting was at its absolute worst if they had known the outcome? Or really, who would have stayed in the US at all if they knew what was coming? Probably just the bravest souls, I guess.

Listen, my friend, as long as there are civilians in the city, the city is still fighting. Once the civilians flee, that's when the city falls—because at that point, I think the soldiers just lose their morale.

I guess they’ll end up blaming today's veterans just like they did the old guard. Whatever they did or didn't do, people will find a way to pin it on them. Of course, everyone focuses on those few ugly moments!!
