Need help with a gaming build! in Desktops ·
Will those 8ms actually make a noticeable difference when I'm gaming or watching 1080p movies?
Just thinking out loud here since I'm not going over $0.00 budget-wise, so I guess I'll just stick with this monitor.
Anyway, thanks a ton—you really helped me out, and I'm stoked with how this setup turned out.
I did spot an LG UltraHD somewhere with a 0ms response time, though it didn't have LED support and was sitting at $4,500... honestly, paired with my current GPU, that would be the dream. Maybe one day.

One more thing: how is a 1080p movie going to look on a 1920x1200 resolution? I'm trying to avoid that weird picture-in-picture effect I get now when I'm running at 1050p.

Alright, thanks for the help. I’ll just go with the 4790 and call it a day.
Quick question though—if you know or if anyone here has experience with monitors—I'm not sure what to prioritize. Is it better to hunt for a higher aspect ratio, faster response times, or maybe specific LED support...
I'm looking for a solid FullHD display with decent specs, ideally with LED up to $667, without having to pay extra for built-in speakers or other junk I won't actually use.

I haven't decided yet. To be honest, that cache performance matters even more to me than the clock speed...
Would you? Hey! So, I checked out that motherboard, and if I were to go through with it—would that 450W power supply actually cut it?
So, regarding option two—can I get the same motherboard that supports the K-series processor for the same price? I’m looking to hit that 4.0 GHz clock speed, and from what I can see, you only get those speeds if you go with a K model.
Maybe I could put something together—keep the current GPU and just bump the RAM up to at least 8GB. Might be worth a shot. $0.00I'm gonna push that clock speed and crank the cache up as high as they'll go.

It’d be my primary, though maybe not my main powerhouse. I’m still planning on using it for music production and compiling apps, so I’d definitely want to beef up the processor a bit—even if both tasks could technically run okay on this one

Thanks for the breakdown, though some links would have been nice... but no biggie.
I’m not really feeling this processor. A 3.20GHz clock speed and 6MB cache seems pretty weak to me. Is there an i5 out there hitting at least 4.0GHz with 8MB of cache that isn't overpriced? I need it to be compatible with this motherboard.

I need some help with my build.
I've put this together, and now I'm looking for ways to trim the budget if possible:

Core i7 4790K
Asus H97 Pro Gamer
Corsair 2x8 1600 C9 Ven
Asus GTX970
SSD Kingston HyperX 3K Box

$3285
This is already getting pretty pricey, and I haven't even factored in a secondary 1TB hard drive, fans, a case, or a DVD drive yet.

Where can I cut costs?
Can I save on the CPU by picking something with similar performance but without integrated graphics?
Or maybe on the motherboard?
Also, what fans and case would you recommend for good cooling?

Alternatively, if there's a similar setup that includes a solid GPU—must be Intel based. A decent i5 would work too if it doesn't sacrifice too much performance.
I'd love to get the whole tower down to around $1,200 or less.

That’s just how it works. It doesn't matter how much video memory the game asks for; what actually matters is how much 3D acceleration the card can actually provide.
There’s a huge difference between having a dedicated GPU and just having a graphics subsystem built into the memory controller.
Looking at that screenshot, the error might be telling you the game needs dedicated VRAM that you just don't have. Which game is this anyway? Oh, I see it's PlayStation 3.
I'm not sure, maybe it runs on Windows XP, but it'll be tough on Windows 8. Maybe try an older version of PES.

See? Your graphics card handles it just fine.

Since you're running the exact same NVIDIA GeForce I am, those games I listed earlier should definitely work for you.

Maybe give Need for Speed Underground or something similar from back in the day a shot.
I've got my doubts about any 3D game released before 2005 actually running on that hardware. On my setup with integrated NVIDIA GeForce, I could only really pull off strategy games—and even then, I could barely manage Settlers 5 at its native resolution.

Need for Speed Underground, the whole Stronghold series, Rise of Nations, Age of Empires... those should run pretty smoothly.

I don't want your TeamViewer, and you shouldn't be giving it to anyone else either.
Just type "dxdiag" into the Run box and tell me what shows up under the graphics properties or whatever. That’s the only way we can figure out what actually needs fixing.

To launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool on Windows 8, hit this shortcut
[Win-Logo]+[R], then just type in the command
dxdiag.exe

We specifically need to see the display tab.

But if he pulled that out of the BIOS, wouldn't Windows fail to run at full resolution?
To check that, just type "dxdiag" into the Run command; you'll be able to see right away if the graphics are active and how much memory is allocated to them.

In the BIOS, those settings should be under the northbridge configuration.
