I was watching some highlights last night and it hit me how much the "arms race" in top-tier sports has accelerated. It feels like every single window, there's some massive, eye-watering sum being thrown around for a single player to fill a specific gap in a roster.

I remember back in the day when a "big signing" meant a solid veteran or a promising youngster, not a transaction that looks like a small country's GDP. It makes me wonder if the soul of the game is being traded for pure star power. Does a team actually become "complete" just by adding one elite name, or is it all just marketing and hype to keep the fans engaged?

I'd love to hear from the die-hards here—do you think these massive moves actually change the competitive balance, or is it just a way for the big clubs to flex their wallets?

To my brilliant mind, he is absolutely GENIUS.

Joseph Edwards4 said:I’ve always felt that Russell Crowe is an exceptional actor. I specifically recall his performance in Master and Commander; it was such a subtle, understated role, devoid of those grandstanding speeches or unnecessary sentimentality that usually plague these types of films, yet he was just incredibly compelling. It feels like people don't discuss that movie much anymore, which is a shame. He has built such a diverse filmography, ranging from Insider and A Beautiful Mind to Gladiator, but somehow, it feels like the conversation around his work has quieted down lately.

That's true; he really is one of the more capable actors working today.

I mentioned the Oscars as one example, but they certainly serve as a metric for excellence, much like any other major award this man has collected. And, as someone else pointed out earlier, rather than treating these awards as an absolute truth, we should probably look at them as reflections of the opinions and critiques held by those actually working within the industry... Besides, nobody ever claimed DDL was the greatest actor to ever walk the earth; we just acknowledged him as one of the greats. You seem to be moving the goalposts on me here. First, you argue he isn't among the legends, then after a bit of pushback, you start comparing him to Al Pacino, and now you're claiming he isn't even the best because he doesn't measure up to Marlon Brando? I honestly can't keep track of which version of your logic we're using today.

I’ll say it again: the idea that this actor doesn't belong in the same conversation as Al Pacino is frankly laughable. There is absolutely no doubt he has reached Pacino's level, and by the time his career wraps up, I suspect we won't even be able to mention Pacino's name in the same breath as DDL without acknowledging how much more dominant he's become. That’s just my take on it.

electricridge6 As I was saying:
It seems most of you here have already decided he belongs in that upper echelon of legends. I suppose if I had to sum up my own hesitation in just one word, that’s exactly where I’d land. 🕺

DDL is absolutely top-tier, and I don't think anyone needs to debate that, BUT trying to lump him in the same category as Marlon Brando is just a bit much. 🙂To suggest that Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are even in the same conversation is a bit of an overstatement, if you ask me. ☕

By the way, I think we drifted into off-topic territory quite some time ago.

He definitely belongs in the conversation with the greats. I wouldn't necessarily claim he’s the undisputed greatest of all time, but given the caliber of work he's putting out lately, he earns his seat at that table. It isn't just hyperbole to say he's the only actor to walk away with three Oscars for Best Actor; while an Oscar certainly shouldn't be the sole metric of talent, there's no denying it serves as one of the most significant benchmarks we have.

electricridge6 said:Well, because he doesn't quite hit their level. Regardless of how many films he’s made, DDL just isn't in that same tier. And why wouldn't you group Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, and Marlon Brando together? By what logic does DDL belong in their league? You're overstating the case by claiming DDL is the greatest of all time.

No one actually claimed DDL was the greatest of all time—I have no idea where you got that from, but at least I didn't say it. Nor did I suggest that Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, and Marlon Brando aren't in the same tier; my point was simply that, in my honest opinion, Al Pacino sits a notch below those three. And please, let's get the names right: it's Brando, not Brandon. 😵

electricridge6 said:Well, nobody here seems to be comparing him to Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s pretty obvious that Daniel Day-Lewis operates on a different level, though even then, you can't quite slot Daniel Day-Lewis into that tiny circle of all-time legends. Honestly, I think comparing him to someone like Robert De Niro is a bit of a stretch.

Why wouldn't we put him in that same league? Are you actually suggesting Al Pacino is so much better than Daniel Day-Lewis that they shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath? I have serious doubts about whether Al Pacino is even superior to Daniel Day-Lewis; if you ask me, Daniel Day-Lewis has already surpassed him, despite being about fifteen years younger and having a less "iconic" filmography with fewer roles under his belt. Please, spare me the attempt to rank him alongside Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, or Al Pacino—it’s frankly laughable..

This film serves as definitive proof that you don't need a massive studio budget or a dizzying array of CGI to create a masterpiece; it’s just pure, unadulterated cinematic perfection.

Honestly, looking at this single trailer, the footage seems pretty lackluster 😁 but you can't deny they've assembled an incredible cast, and having the brothers involved makes it a mandatory watch regardless. I’m just holding out hope that the trailer is doing the actual movie a disservice.
