Nail care tips?

I really need to get my nails done for an upcoming gala... but honestly, my current manicure is a complete DISASTER! I was thinking about getting a gel set, but then I heard all those horror stories about how if you don't maintain them perfectly, your nails just end up brittle, cracked, and totally ruined. What should I even do here? 😕🤷 🤷
