Budget gaming PC build for the kids in Desktops ·
I guess swapping out the cooler might be a bit overkill for that specific series? 😁

So, looking at what you mentioned, if I buy everything as a bundle from them, they'll put it together, right? But what if I pick out each component individually? Does anyone actually offer a warranty on those custom builds, or am I basically losing all my protection if I assemble it myself? How does that even work? 🤷

The cooler that comes with the Ryzen 5 is actually kind of worse than the one they gave us with the 1600.
I guess you won't really notice much while gaming on the Ryzen 5, especially if you aren't overclocking, but that F-117 Nighthawk included with it isn't exactly top-tier.
Basically, there probably won't be a huge difference most of the time, though maybe in some cases it could matter, especially if your room is warm... plus the stock cooler might get a bit louder.

The way you're talking makes me sound like someone who's definitely going to overclock. 😬

So, I was wondering, if I did end up getting an extra cooler, how does that work? Like, do you mount it onto the one already there, or do you just take the old one off? 🤷

crimsonstag84 said:Not really, the 2600 is a bit faster. I can't quite remember which one I picked 😬 ...but since the price is pretty reasonable compared to the 1600X now, you could probably just go with the 2600 model.

You used the 2600 while the other guy went with the 1600, and there isn't a huge difference between them, so that's why I was asking 😁

So, if I end up getting the 2600, I guess I don't need the Corsair Hydro Series, right? Since that's a CPU cooler and this one comes with its own, did I get that right? Or maybe I should still grab it just in case? I'm not sure if it's actually necessary or not. 🤷

crimsonstag84 said:It’s just that stepping up from an NVIDIA GTX 1060 costs me an extra $1,500 or so, and you get the 8GB $167.

You'll definitely need a cooler for the 1600X since it doesn't come with one included, so maybe grab a Freezer 33 for $63.

I guess, is that 1600 actually better than the 2600 build you put together, or 🤷

Robert Rodriguez2 said:I think we're forgetting that this is really for kids who don't actually need anything beefier than an NVIDIA GTX 1060 and a Ryzen 5 1600/2600 for 1080p gaming...

Everything they need can probably fit under the original budget. I guess I'd rather just go with the NVIDIA GTX 1060 now, and then maybe in three years when the warranty runs out, I'll swap it for something similar in that same tier.

I'm actually thinking along those same lines, I was just looking at putting something together like this.

http://prntscr.com/ljkosf

That would be about $700 if paying cash, or maybe $750 for cards. Since I'm skipping the graphics card for now, I'm saving enough to grab that monitor we were talking about earlier.🤷

It's pretty easy to just pick up a better GPU later on if it turns out we need one, right? 🤷 😁

Robert Rodriguez2 said:Adam Williams2, just take crimsonstag84's build but swap the 240GB SSD for a 500GB one instead, and that should do it. For kids, there's really no point going higher or more expensive than that. Later on, once they grow up a bit and want to play heavier games on the same setup, you'll be able to just upgrade the CPU and the GPU without having to touch anything else.

See, they're playing Fortnite and stuff like COD or FIFA on a PlayStation right now. I know the graphics won't ever be top-tier, but my main goal is just making sure it doesn't lag—if that makes sense. I mean, watching them try to play together on that old Acer laptop is rough; it stutters constantly even on the lowest settings. I just want to avoid that. If crimsonstag84's build allows for smooth, stutter-free gameplay, then that’s perfect for the next few years and I'll probably pull the trigger on it immediately.😁
Budget gaming PC build for the kids in Desktops ·
So, what if I kept everything else the same, but ditched this expensive graphics card for a bigger SSD and just used the GPU from crimsonstag84's build instead? Would that still be okay?

Then, once I have more cash on hand and actually need the extra power, I could just swap in a beefier card later on.🤷

My current laptop only has 8GB of RAM, and I’ll probably be stuck with it for another two years, so I guess it makes more sense to go with double that amount in the desktop. As for the SSD, I just know it's faster than a standard hard drive, but I don't really know much else about them.😁

So, if I just grab the best parts from this thread

https://prnt.sc/ljibwe

I'd end up with $2933, and that’s excluding the network card and the monitor 😁

I wonder how much of a beast this setup would be? Like, is this actually the absolute top tier? 🤷 😬

Jonathan Barrett said:Man, please don't get that TP-Link one mentioned above. The signal was pretty weak—at least for me. I was barely getting 20mbps. I ended up grabbing a more powerful model for basically the same price.

https://www.bestbuy.com/tp...m_medium=click

And ever since then, I've been getting my max speeds even through two brick walls and about 15-20 feet of distance.

Wait, what is that connecting to the case via USB?

wiredotter14 said:If you're going with a WiFi adapter, just keep an eye on how far away you are from the router.

I'd definitely avoid those tiny little ones where the antenna is just tucked inside the USB stick itself.

Yeah, honestly, the signal in my room is kind of weak anyway, so feel free to throw out suggestions for both options. I'll probably just grab whatever you recommend right away rather than stressing over it later. 😁

Here's the link.

I guess I agree about the motherboard—it could definitely be better—but regarding the RAM slots, it doesn't really matter much. I mean, 99% of people probably won't ever need more than two during their computer's lifespan. With the GTX 1070 Ti, things get a bit tight 😁, but maybe it's still worth squeezing it in? A GTX 1070 would fit within the budget without any issues.

The whole point of my post was just that you can actually fit a GTX 1070 Ti in there up to the amount that guy mentioned, and compared to an RX 580, it’s a pretty significant upgrade. You end up with a much better gaming rig. I wasn't really comparing retail prices, so maybe you could find it cheaper somewhere else. I was with AMD on that one.

Oh, wait, can that GTX fit in the moderator's build, or is it just for this version of yours? 🤷

And one more thing, the PC will be using WiFi, so I guess I might need some kind of card for that too, right? 😁

Actually, one more thing... 😬

Can I expect any deals on these parts at a place like Micro Center or something, or do sales usually only apply to brand-new stuff? I wonder if US shops have those big expo booths or special promotions like that, since I've never really been to one so I'm not sure. 🤷

Timothy Kim60 said:Maybe you're overestimating things a bit... getting 47% at 1080p click.

But yeah, if you're looking to bump up the budget, maybe go for a GTX 1070 or 1070 Ti. That motherboard seems like a slightly weak choice for this setup; I guess it might be better to look for something with a decent VRM cooler and four RAM slots, since space isn't really an issue here.

So, which motherboard would actually work best with that configuration above? Like, what would be the best fit? 😁

crimsonstag84 said:The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 doesn't really make sense when you look at those RX570/580 prices... you're only getting about 30-35% more performance for almost double the cost (around $533 more).

That guy claiming a quad-core i5 🤣 hasn't been relevant for nearly two years, so I guess we can take his expertise with a grain of salt.

And look, a buddy of mine—a real friend, mind you—offered me his PC yesterday. It's not that he's clueless or anything, he just isn't an expert like you. He had a build put together at a local Best Buy, and he’s totally happy with it, but it doesn't really serve his needs anymore, so he wants to sell. When I showed him your suggested setup and price, he basically said he could get the same thing at a local shop for twice as much. 😁

So, I guess the people selling these things are supposed to be experts, right? Even if it turns out they aren't, the customer ends up being perfectly happy anyway...

Then there's this other guy I know, pretty well-educated type, a manager and all, nothing too flashy. He got his rig from Micro Center, and they sold him the exact same kind of stuff my buddies would suggest. He's super satisfied with what he bought about a year and a half or two ago, so maybe that explains why the whole i5 thing 😁

Anyway, if those guys are totally content, while the stuff you're suggesting to me would basically eat a PC for breakfast—with some i5 and NVIDIA for lunch—then I wouldn't just be happy, I’d probably send you money via PayPal for a beer. And I mean a fancy craft beer, not just some cheap Bud Light 😁 😉

But I guess life has taught me that everyone thinks their own horse is the fastest, so you have to be careful with everything. That's why I take their comments with a reserve, and I do the same with yours, though I don't really have anywhere else to verify them. It's not that anyone is being mean or rude, it's just how it is. 😉

We're just talking here, but I've heard so many people say Intel is better for gaming. I guess, if that's not actually true, could someone explain where that reputation came from? Maybe it was true once and just stuck, but it's not really like that anymore...

Even my buddy wouldn't go for that specific monitor; he'd want an IPS panel instead. But so what? Who am I supposed to listen to? For me, the monitor is just for gaming, not for watching movies. To be honest, before this little debate started, I hadn't even thought that much about monitors. I guess I'd just want something big and nice that isn't too expensive. 😁
Budget gaming PC build for the kids in Desktops ·
So, we've got a 55-inch TV at home that was bought before the World Cup, so there's plenty of screen to watch movies on 😁

And I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea, I'm not really sure how demanding Fortnite actually is. It's not like people are only going to play Fortnite forever; it's just what's popular right now. Maybe tomorrow kids will move on to something else entirely. Back when I was their age, I went from CM to FIFA and then over to GTA and Neverwinter, so... I guess anything could happen 😁

What I'm really looking for is a PC that can run Fortnite and other games like it—all those newer titles—without any issues. That's pretty much it. And if I'm spending my money, I'd love to get a decent price-to-performance ratio. As for VA or IPS, it doesn't matter too much to me. I remember my dad getting me an Acer monitor for about $600; I remember other cases costing way more than that back then, but that Acer lasted through three different builds before it finally died, and the picture looked good on all of them, no matter what I was playing, you know? 😁

Also, someone told me today that he's running a Pentium with Nvidia, also for his kid to play games. He's staying over at my place with my setup, and he thinks that for the money, it’s better to go with a quad-core i5 and some GeForce rather than AMD. So, I guess I'm wondering if there's any truth to that, or if the build my buddy Smartic suggested is actually better than going with Intel and Nvidia 🤷
Budget gaming PC build for the kids in Desktops ·
I see a lot of people mentioning GeForce, so I was wondering—what’s the actual difference between that card and the one you listed? 🤷

I've heard things about GeForce too, so that's why I'm asking, I guess. 😁
Budget gaming PC build for the kids in Desktops ·
So here's the deal, my kids are basically breathing down my neck wanting a PC with all those RGB lights 😁

I guess the first thing on the list would be a case that actually glows, right? 😁

Second, I need this machine to actually run games. Right now, they're obsessed with Fortnite—playing it just like every other kid in town. And from what I gather, Fortnite and a bunch of other titles get updates constantly. I really don't want to blow a ton of cash on something that’ll become a total headache and a frustration magnet in two years because it can't keep up with the latest patches...

It would be great if it lasts a good few years, and ideally, I could just upgrade parts as needed rather than having to scrap everything and start over...

I was thinking maybe around $900 for the tower, but I could stretch it to $1,200 if that extra money gets me something significantly better. If it's only like a 10-20% boost, it probably isn't worth it to me, so maybe we can find a happy medium...

Anyway, please send some recommendations my way. I'm planning to look at whatever most people suggest so I can check it out in person. Maybe I'll catch a Black Friday deal, too. I might even head over to Best Buy to see if they have anything interesting...

Also, feel free to suggest monitors, but that'll be a separate budget entirely, independent of the PC build...

So yeah, thanks! If anyone has questions, just ask 😁
How to set up a WiFi extender in IT Support ·
It’s honestly pretty funny when you show up to an online forum—which, you know, is part of the internet—and someone just tells you to "use the internet." Like, thanks for the tip, I totally forgot about that one. 👍

So, look, I don't want to dig through a hundred million different explanations and methods just to find an answer. What I'm actually asking is where and how. I mean, if you knew everything I was trying to figure out, you’d probably just say, "Hey, go to the router settings, click this, then toggle that on the Netgear WiFi Extender, type this specific thing in for it, and give it a shot." That would actually be helpful to me. Telling me to "use the internet" feels a bit like telling someone to grab some bait and toss it into the ocean and hoping something bites. You might be fishing for perch and end up catching a grouper, but hey, whatever works, right? 👍

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I guess I'll try to figure out all those steps you mentioned on my own. It’ll probably take me like four hours, though, and if I get stuck somewhere, I might just lose my cool and throw the whole thing out the window by 3 PM. 😁

But if you could just shorten the process for me, that would be awesome. That's really what would be great. 👍
How to set up a WiFi extender in IT Support ·
So, I picked up a Netgear WiFi Extender the other day. I'm trying to get it to link up with my Cisco DSLAM from AT&T because the signal in the kids' room is pretty weak. They basically guarantee the speed over Ethernet, but when it comes to Wi-Fi, it’s kind of a different story...

The thing is, I just can't get connected at all. I have a feeling the issue might be with my router, since I tried the exact same device at a buddy's place and it worked perfectly fine there. I'm wondering what could be causing this and maybe how I might be able to fix it. 🤷

Anyway, I feel like I've followed all the instructions to a T... and I don't want to keep repeating myself ->

So, if anyone happens to know what's going on or what the issue might be, please let me know so we can try to figure it out. 🕺

My laptop is whistling in IT Support ·

So, as you can see in this video, my laptop basically gave up on me today.

It was just sitting there on my desk when it suddenly shut off. I figured, okay, the battery probably just died, so I plugged in the charger and hit the power button... and then it started making this weird clicking sound.

And it just kept clicking until macOS finally managed to boot up. I thought, alright, maybe it's fine now, but every single time I close the lid, it starts clicking again as soon as I open it back up. If I try to reset it before the OS loads, the same thing happens, and if I shut it down completely, it does the same thing.

What should I do? Does anyone know what might be going on? 🤷

Should I just take it to a repair shop? And if I do, how long does a fix like this usually take? I really need this laptop for work. 🤷

Just playing the "greater good" card again, are we? Typical...

Well, they tolerated her quietly, and honestly, they probably would have kept doing it if Plenković hadn't stepped on them. Even when he did, they weren't even 100% sure if they'd keep putting up with her or not. If they were actual tough guys, maybe after he sorted out their ministers, they would've just come out and said "screw Plenković" or "who cares," but even that didn't happen...

I guess I'm wondering where you saw or read that they turned out to be honest people. Your logic doesn't really make much sense, I suppose.

From what I can tell, the guy was conducting his little heists so sloppily that even a 7th grader in an American elementary school could have gathered enough evidence to sink him. I guess being a leader for just ten people is hard if you don't have at least a few "your own" people in the mix. Now, imagine when you start poking at the mafia. Who blocked whom, or lied to whom? I don't know. We can just argue that there were some heavy accusations made, but nothing happened. Maybe they really are all scum together, or maybe they aren't. I don't know for sure, and honestly, nobody here does either, so it feels kind of silly to fight about it. I still like to believe there's some morality left out there and that someone decent will eventually step up, and maybe half these crooks will get what's coming to them eventually 😁
