Smart card ID verification status in IT Support ·
Hey there!
I just picked up a new Dell Latitude notebook running Windows 10.

Every time I try to log into Login.gov using my smart card reader, this "Select smart device" popup appears. It detects the ViacomCBS id Card (Gemalto USB Smart card reader 0). That ViacomCBS option shows up highlighted, so it looks selectable. Right underneath, it says Smart card is Ready for Use. When I hit OK, it spins for maybe two seconds on "Checking status," then just loops right back to that same "Smart card is Ready for Use" message. After trying to click OK five or six times, I finally get an error saying, "No valid identification certificate selected. Please try again."

The ID Middleware picks up the card immediately, so I'm assuming the reader itself is working fine.

@wearytrucker22, if you actually read my post closely, I was specifically addressing his questions about bookkeeping tasks—like those payments to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce—especially since he mentioned being "good at accounting." Obviously, a bookkeeper isn't going to have answers regarding suspense accounts; that’s just not what they do, nor is it what they get paid for. And honestly, your examples about massive corporations and billions of dollars feel a bit misplaced here. We're talking about setting up a small LLC where the owner might make a few thousand bucks. In that scenario, I'm guessing he'll find advice much more useful on things like, as you put it, "knowing which account to hit, which taxes to pay and when, Labor Law stuff, minor tax headaches, travel expenses, and office supplies," rather than how to hide a billion in profit. Once he hits that level, I highly doubt he'll be looking for advice on a forum! 👍

@William Morgan - Like Henry Edwards33 suggested, that specific subforum is perfect for finding most of what you need. Most startup questions have already been covered there; you just need to dig through the threads a bit. Good luck with the business!

Look, I’m saying this with the best intentions—honestly, just so you don't run into trouble later—but I have to point out the contradiction here. You claim you're "great at accounting," yet most of the questions you asked in your first post suggest otherwise. Personally, I would never call someone a skilled accountant if they were asking those kinds of fundamental questions. That’s stuff you should expect your accountant to explain to *you*.

College knowledge and actual hands-on experience are two totally different beasts. It might be a smart move to consult with a seasoned, pro accountant before you dive headfirst into the job.

Maybe someone on this thread can help me out with a quick question.

I’m looking for some advice regarding invoicing within the USA versus how I handle the IRS. I’d really appreciate any insight. It’s about an invoice being issued by an LLC that’s registered for tax purposes, specifically for consulting services.

I’m billing a firm over in Germany. Our contract specifies a gross fee, including this note: “All fees Quincy are inclusive of VAT if applicable and all other taxes. The fees will be paid gross.”

Since the tax for these services is typically paid in the recipient's country (in this case, Germany), my question is: am I actually allowed to show sales tax on the invoice I send to Germany? For example, if our agreed fee is gross $333, would I list the service value as $267 + $67 tax?

If I’m not supposed to show tax on there, how do I handle this given what's already written in my contract?

Thanks!
