24-27" monitors with built-in TV? in Computer Peripherals ·

I’m still stuck on what to buy. Digging deeper into the specs, I noticed there's data for both image refresh rate and monitor refresh rate.

I have no clue how those two actually differ.

------------------------------------------

I've decided I'll stick with my current monitor for now. I'll get the TV-monitor combo for my mom since our old CRT TV is finally giving up the ghost. It lasted us about 15 years.

Since she'll be watching from across the room, I figure resolution isn't as vital as brightness—if I really have to choose between the two. Size-wise, I'm looking at almost exclusively 24-inch models, because she doesn't have much space for anything bigger. Plus, I don't want to get her something smaller than what she's used to. I usually lean toward Samsung over other brands, but I'm not strictly tied to that.

I could probably drop my budget from $833 down to $667.

Thanks for the help.

So I'd probably go with one of these

Hey everyone

I'm looking to pick up a 24-27" monitor that doubles as a TV—something with a built-in digital tuner. I want to be able to watch local broadcast channels or maybe some streaming service without having to buy a separate set-top box.

My eyesight isn't great, so eye health is a huge priority. I need a display with all the features meant to reduce strain, ideally within a budget of about $833. Higher resolution is a must, preferably anything better than 1920x1080.

To be honest, I haven't spent much time researching this stuff. Aside from resolution and refresh rates (Hz), I don't know much. I also hear IPS might be better than standard LCD or AMOLED monitors.

If I have to drop down from 27" to "only" 24" just to get better picture quality, I'm willing to do it.

My go-to site for tech info is Best Buy

So, what do you guys think about these specific models?

Or do you suggest something else entirely? I'm open to suggestions if you can explain why they're better.

I mostly use my PC for browsing, The White House, and the occasional movie or YouTube clip. It bugs me that I don't have a TV in my room, and I figure it's probably just one extra chip in the hardware that makes it possible. Since I'm buying anyway, I might as well solve both problems at once. Beyond high resolution, brightness, contrast, and refresh rate, I don't really need anything fancy since most of what I do involves static images.
Which printer is best for using generic ink? in Computer Peripherals ·
I've got a question similar to this thread, though it’s not strictly on topic.

Has anyone picked up a recent issue of PCMag, Time, or maybe Newsweek since last month? I was at the library recently and saw an article about mid-range business inkjets and laser printers... I just need the model names. That's it. I won't be back at the library anytime soon.

I'm looking for those printers where the original toner or ink is way cheaper because you pay more upfront for the machine itself. They usually have larger tanks too, so you aren't constantly swapping them out or refilling them.
Refilling the ink tank vs. just buying a new printer in Computer Peripherals ·
Is there any chance I could pay for an Ink Tank System installation on my HP Envy in two installments? Or maybe a hybrid deal—part cash, part services where I handle some English to American translations for you? The scanner on this unit is incredibly fast, which is exactly why I don't want to ditch it for some older printer that already has an Ink Tank System built in.

You know how it is... finding steady work is a massive struggle for the blind or visually impaired, and I'm definitely part of that large group dealing with chronic unemployment. Being able to trade my skills for part of the cost would be a huge lifesaver. I'm a solid translator; I've done a few books, I've got a sharp eye for grammar, etc., etc., etc.

Why don't you test me out? Give me a few cards of text that have already been translated, and you can see just how quickly and accurately I work. Compare my version against what you already have on hand.

No rush on a decision. I’m actually heading out to the coast for an educational seminar on improving employment opportunities for the blind and visually impaired. You can check out my work starting from the 27th of this month onwards.

Also, regarding the setup... would your Ink Tank System fit inside the printer housing, or does it absolutely have to sit externally?

..............................................

And for everyone else watching—if I do end up getting rid of this HP, what’s the move? Is it better to grab a cheap color laser for around $1,000$500 or find a mid-range inkjet for the same price that might already come with an integrated Ink Tank System?
Refilling the ink tank vs. just buying a new printer in Computer Peripherals ·
Look, it just needs to have duplex functionality. I don't really care about having an external monitor since my PC is running 12 to 14 hours a day anyway.
Refilling the ink tank vs. just buying a new printer in Computer Peripherals ·
Hey everyone. I picked up an HP ENVY 6000 last year, but honestly, the ink capacity is driving me crazy. My eyesight isn't what it used to be, so constantly messing around with tiny ink cartridges is a real pain. I checked with a local shop about installing an external tank system, and they said it’s doable, but the quote was $400. Seems pretty steep considering I only paid $267 for the printer itself.

Is that actually a smart move?

Or should I just bite the bullet and get a mid-to-high range inkjet (maybe an HP?) with larger reservoirs. I know the HP ENVY series uses those bigger tanks, and apparently, the ink is about 50% cheaper than what I'm using now. I've been looking at specs for printers ranging from $1,000 up to $667, but I haven't found clear info on their actual ink capacities yet.

Alternatively, would a cheap color laser make more sense? I don't need Wi-Fi or A3 printing—just decent color prints, nothing fancy. Reliability and cost-per-page are my main priorities. It needs to be an all-in-one.

My usage is pretty irregular; I can go weeks without printing anything, then suddenly need to churn out 50 or 100 pages at once. That's why I leaned toward an HP...

My advice? Grab a sparkling water at some local corner cafe. The regulars who actually know you usually have a bit more empathy—they might even offer to help with the baby.
As for me, if I saw that happening, I’d feel for the woman. But if I actually stepped in and offered to hold the baby so she could get a break, I’d probably end up being labeled the crazy one.

No, a woman wouldn't be called a freak for that. But if a guy tried to help out like that—if he actually liked the kid or wanted to help the mom (not in a weird way, obviously)—he’d be branded a predator instantly. Because apparently, we've all turned into alligators toward one another, as > puts it.

Jessica Chavez4 said:Look, I get how you can reach a breaking point when everything just piles up at once, but that kind of behavior is still ugly to watch—and honestly, I wouldn't put up with it. For one, I find it incredibly cringey when parents brag about their kids like they’re some sort of trophy. And second? I really have zero interest in sitting in a coffee shop trying to enjoy a quiet latte only to be subjected to someone's kid screaming their head off right next to me.

Who needs kids anyway? Just more people peeing, pooping, and screaming...

I order two sparkling waters, and within minutes, the baby just starts crying. It’s not just a whimper—it’s a full-on meltdown. I tried holding him, but nothing worked; he just wanted to be carried. He was clearly overstimulated and fussy. Honestly, I felt so embarrassed. In a moment of total desperation, I just set him down to lie there and cry for about ten minutes while I had a cigarette and finished my water. Eventually, the crying turned into this intense, piercing screaming.

Just a few yards away, there was this group of about six people in their 30s, and they were staring at me the whole time.

When I finally decided to head out, I apologized for the noise. They didn't even say anything back; one of them just gave a little wave, like a "whatever" gesture.

I really want to know what you guys think. Was I being judged?

Was it because I was being "rude" by staying and making everyone listen to the screaming instead of just leaving immediately? Or were they judging me for letting the baby cry while I sat there calmly smoking and drinking?

How would you have reacted if you saw this happening? What would your take be, and honestly, how should I have handled it?

Or maybe they didn't actually have a problem with you at all.

You weren't being rude. If people were judging, I'd say it was because they thought you "left" the kid crying.

That sounds awesome!!! If I end up pulling the trigger on that same setup—and I'm about to grab a multi-function inkjet now—could you tell me, based on your own experience or maybe what your family uses, which mono laser printer is actually decent? I need something that isn't overpriced and stays pretty compact. Not so tiny that you have to feed it paper one sheet at a time, and ideally with a battery so I can move it around with my laptop... I don't need "ultra-portable," just something that doesn't hog all my desk space.
Auto duplex printing + ink refill recommendations? in Computer Peripherals ·
A buddy of mine, a retail manager for seven years now, has an HP LaserJet Pro. He’s been running third-party ink this whole time. Back when his kids were still in high school, he said he used the thing constantly. He couldn't tell me if it was from the X series or not, just that it was the 3850 model.

Let me know when you finally pull the trigger on a new one. I want to hear which model you went with and what made you pick it over the others.

Honestly, picking out a new printer feels as high-stakes as buying a house.

Any info you can share would be huge.

Hope my posts helped you out a bit.

Epson Stylus SX-515/525/535

I was leaning towards Canon myself, but because finding cheap third-party ink is such a headache, I'll probably just grab an SX-535 or one of the two before it. Mostly sticking to the SX series since they're older enough that replacement inks actually exist and are way easier to find than for a Canon. At least, that's how it looks to me. This company does carry compatible inks for some Canon models.

It's a bummer that going with Epson means losing that direct CD/DVD printing feature—I could really use that. Canons tend to be slower, but they run quieter than Epsons, and for me, quiet operation matters more than raw speed.

Regarding the Epson, check out those inks too. The ones called Hummingbird.

Oh yeah, those Epson SX series printers tend to last quite a while. My neighbor's has been running for over four years; she doesn't print much, but she always uses third-party colors.

To make it easier to figure out which printer supports automatic double-sided printing, just google this

Well, I did a quick search. Everyone is just selling ink for the HP Envy series, but finding any of those actual printers here in the States... they're nowhere to be found. Just the ink.

And I'm not buying one through some random site like eBay or whatever, because if it breaks during the warranty period, good luck getting anyone to fix it.

I even checked the official HP website, and they're only pushing the ink, not the actual hardware.

Huh, why so complicated? What happens if I try mixing Hummingbird with standard inks on this printer?

I tried the workaround for the HP Envy Series... but looks like it isn't available here in the States. Or at least not much of it. Are those Hummingbird inks actually made by HP or someone else?

People were practically driving in from Indianapolis just to pick up those bundles when we were out in Napa Valley.

Will that Hummingbird bundle or the permanent cartridges actually work on an HP OfficeJet Pro WF-3010DW?

It’s not a multi-function model, but I already have a scanner, so I don't really need the extra features.

You've got a point. It's only an option if someone is dead set on color printing but can't swing a color laser from those overpriced brands... $333...what he's actually left with.

I’m one of those unfortunate souls currently prepping to ditch my monochrome laser for an inkjet. My old mono laser has officially kicked the bucket... Maybe the smartest move is just keeping a single laser for black and white alongside a color inkjet.
