Are humans just animals? in Philosophy ·
haven't checked this thread in a minute, but looks like people are actually talking...

when we talk about being animals, I think it just comes down to those raw, primal instincts. if you really peel back the layers on most of our interactions with the world, it’s nothing but pure selfishness. doesn't matter what anyone tries to tell you,

hollowhawk95 said:To be honest, I don't think that's really going to help you much. You should probably avoid drinking too much coffee; having too much can cause nausea and a massive headache (I once downed 25 ounces of coffee just to power through some required reading, and it didn't even keep me awake—it just made me feel like I was suffering from caffeine poisoning)
Water can wake you up too, though personally, citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, grapefruits, or tangerines work better for me. And you should probably listen to the advice about taking a 15-30 minute nap that they gave you.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. If you pull this off, you might end up wanting to break the Guinness World Record for sleep deprivation, which I think is around 40 days. Though, I guess some scientists claim sleep isn't strictly necessary anyway.😉

Look, I’m basically living on a liter of strong black coffee a day, plus another 7 or 8 cups from the vending machines at work.

But if I try to knock back three 10-ounce mugs one after another at the end of the shift? Yeah, I’m gonna feel sick.

What actually helps me is putting an ice pack on the back of my neck and just constantly sipping on some iced juice.

bravo
killer post

it’s not books that scare me—honestly, I love reading

writing? hate it. grammar is just one more useless evil in this world

I'll be the first to admit I talk a lot of crap, so what?

I don't have anyone to talk to, and sometimes it feels like nothing gets a conversation moving unless people start clashing

when you talk about being an "alpha," I don't mean you're some big shot in the group; it's more like you're challenging the alphas to climb the social ladder

we’re all out here chasing better jobs, better living standards, better friends

but if I actually showed everyone my true face, we wouldn't even be having this conversation

society is backwards and narrow-minded, and let's face it, it's just and man being an animal... basically we're all just chameleons
and I'm the only one struggling to hit the right shade of camouflage
I honestly think those 2007 and 2011 models are way easier to deal with

You basically just gotta slam it hard from the inside—like, you wedge it right against the edge of the opening and just "crack" it with everything you've got, then it'll pop right through those little internal gates in the machine

Or sometimes even that won't work, and you just end up totally wrecking the damn thing like this🙂

electricmaker49 said:Honestly, you’ll get the most out of life if you just learn to listen to that inner voice—but you can only do that if you've cleared out all the mental clutter first. I mean, in every sense of the word. Once you find that clarity, you finally realize just how much intrinsic value you actually have as an individual.

not sure what you mean by that—if we're talking about stuff rattling around in your skull, then yeah, good luck with that.😁

And who exactly is this "individual" supposed to be worth something to?
How do you even define someone's value? In my book, it’s all just a comparison game against everyone else. If you’re stranded on a desert island, there’s no yardstick left, just whatever you decide is right at the time.

To become "valuable," you basically have to prove you're "more valuable" than the rest of the pack. Everyone thinks they're the smartest guy in the room, and nobody misses a chance to flex it.☕

What’s a realistic price tag for this setup?

Intel Core i5 with ASUS
ASRock z77 extreme4
Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb
msi 660ti OC 2gb
ssd 128gb ocz vertex4
xfx pro 550w
hdd seagate 1tb green
cooler master case with a hot-swap bay (can't recall the exact model)

Asking because work is looking a bit shaky right now, so I don't want to undersell myself if I have to let this go.

If anyone can give me a real estimate—and what kind of price I’d need to hit to move it by tomorrow—let me know.

thanks

I honestly can't stand the sound of a baby crying. I think I heard way too much of it growing up

Back when my little one was tiny, I’d just throw him over my shoulder and rock him around for three or four hours straight whenever he had those colic fits

But hey, I get why my wife hit her breaking point. She just couldn't deal with the mental toll anymore, and let's be real—moms always seem to take the crying harder than guys do

The thing is, I’d rather be asking you guys for input instead of her

I walked up to her and asked if I could just take the kid and settle him down myself. Seriously, what's the point of playing nice and acting polite if you're just watching a baby suffer?

And then they have the nerve to tell me I'm heartless... 🙂

Look, man, anyone who’s actually reached the point where they want to check out doesn't usually bother making a big production out of it.

If someone’s sitting there overthinking it, they’re basically just grasping at straws, trying to find one last reason to stay.
Posting about it? That's just a flare gun going off in the dark—it's a cry for help.

The people who have truly made up their minds... you aren't gonna get an explanation from them on a forum. You’d need a therapy session to even get close to the truth.

Most of us just talking like this? We're just looking for eyes on us. Just wanting someone to notice.

I remember this one night, stumbling home wasted, thinking I might just end it all right then and there. But after a couple of clumsy attempts with a razor, I realized I hadn't even managed to break the skin properly.

I just thought, "Well, I gave it a shot. A little blood's leaking, whatever. I'm gonna crash, and we'll see what happens tomorrow."

Ended up just leaving a few spots on the sheets.😂

It’s not like I’m being dishonest, because I didn't just stay planted on one side of the fence.

It feels more like having one foot in here and the other out there—makes it even harder to walk straight without stumbling.

man, I am seriously trying here

but everything sounds fine in my head, then there’s this total disconnect when I actually say it out loud
it feels totally normal to me, maybe even a little playful, but somehow it just comes out sounding morbid and weirdly off-putting

sorry, again... really didn't mean any harm by it

Truth be told, I was doing a bit better back then

It was ages ago, though. My whole perspective has shifted since then.

I could never bring myself to take my own life. To me, that just feels like throwing in the towel.

But if things ever pushed me back to that edge again... honestly, some kind of assisted suicide would probably be the easiest way out.

The weirdest part was the week after. I wasn't even thinking about my own mess; I was stuck on that guy.
🤷If I’d gone over and provoked him, if I'd acted like a total idiot, he would’ve ended two lives in one go. He’d have been carrying a weight far heavier than anything I’m dealing with right now. I just felt bad for him, you know?

This isn't really about suicide, but it’s pretty damn close

I remember this one night hanging out with some buddies, ended up at a local dive bar, and after a few too many drinks, we decided to head out.

Just past the exit, there was this group of guys, maybe in their early 30s. As I was walking by, one of them calls out, "Hey, get over here!"
My crew just kept moving, leaving me standing there facing this guy who was clearly wasted. He starts rambling at me about his big celebrations, how he’s getting married soon, bachelor parties, all that junk. I just gave him a shrug and said, "Alright, so what now?" But as I turned to walk away, the guy grabbed my shoulder and spun me back around.
He flips open his jacket, and there it is—a handgun. He goes, "Why you acting so cocky? What if I just shot you right here?"
I don't know why, but I stayed weirdly calm. The only thought running through my head was, *Man, I hope he doesn't hit my gut; that would be the worst.* Instead of panicking, I just looked him dead in the eye and said, "Look, if you're actually gonna do it, just shoot me in the head so I don't have to suffer."
The guy just froze. He turned around and walked off. His buddy caught up to me a second later and explained the dude had just had way too much to drink and claimed he was some kind of cop or something.

The thing is, once I truly reached that point where I didn't give a damn what happened next, I actually felt... good. Like, strangely light. So, I wouldn't be surprised if people who decide to end things feel that exact same sense of peace.

It happens when they finally accept that everything is just irrelevant, and whatever comes, comes.🤷

So you're talking about a goal, but what does that actually look like to you?

If you ask me, the whole point of any of this is just personal growth.

But honestly, that’s subjective as hell. It means something different to everyone.

The "herd" mentality? That’s just a tool people use to try and get there.

Larry Wilson5 said:Are you just looking to act on animalistic impulses?
Goodness doesn't exist as a physical thing or an inherent quality; it's just a concept, and a pretty manipulative one at that.
Prosperity can lead to action, but it doesn't create "good" or "evil" people. Those categories don't exist.
Survival of the pack is the only imperative in the animal kingdom. And animals aren't good or evil. They don't have anyone telling them to "be good" or "you're being wonderful."
Solidarity is just a rule of the pack, purely because staying alive as a group is the priority.
Human laws, the ones written in thick books, can't match
the raw effectiveness of the laws that animals instinctively recognize and follow.
There's plenty more to say, but questioning your convictions can work wonders—especially when it comes to how we view animals.

Look, it's not like I'm trying to trash animals. I'm just saying that the more we try to deny the reality of how things work globally, the more we just end up getting better at lying to ourselves. We haven't moved forward an inch; we've just mastered self-delusion.

And regarding that whole "pack solidarity" thing... don't they have hierarchies too? The weak ones bow down to the strong. Where's the equality there? Where's the solidarity?

Why would I be talking out of my ass?

But honestly, when I was watching that, I actually felt this weird rush of excitement. I don't get why I sometimes get so worked up over stuff that shouldn't even matter—like some random song, a video game, or a movie. It feels like it’s more about how it’s packaged and presented rather than what’s actually going on inside the content itself.

Actually, maybe I am talking out of my ass just a little bit.☕

That video was heavy, man. Really hit home.

I'm just holding out hope for that day when I can finally look at the world and say: I'M NOT AFRAID ANYMORE.

@Harold Doyle3

Seriously, man, thanks for throwing all that Materialist stuff at me and giving me a bit of a headache. I appreciate it.

So, I’m gonna try to actually make sense of my own scattered thoughts for once.

Look, I get it. You're right—I am totally contradicting myself here.

But honestly? I'm just trying to tap into that raw, animalistic simplicity.
I’d be a lot happier if I didn't spend every waking second questioning everything, but since I can't stop, maybe if I vent to someone else, they'll tell me I'm just overthinking it.

I know this sounds a bit pointless, but what’s even the point of having an opinion if you don't have anyone to bounce it off of?

My life looks fine on paper—got a healthy, thriving son and a wife, we've got a solid marriage going.
I don't exactly live by the rules I talk about, but deep down, it feels like I'm constantly fighting against my own internal programming.

That's why I'm out here looking for some kind of validation. Am I actually wired differently than everyone else, or is everybody else just staying quiet about the same thing?
Are humans just animals? in Philosophy ·
Honestly, I’m just stuck on this whole "progress" thing. Progress toward what, exactly?

If I had to boil my entire worldview down to one single sentence, it’d probably be something like🙂why the hell did we even climb down from the trees in the first place?🙂
Are humans just animals? in Philosophy ·
Look, nobody’s disputing the biological side of things. That part is solid. But even those scientific categories? They’re just stuff humans cooked up to make sense of the chaos.

The real kicker is that a dog doesn't actually know it's a dog, and it sure as hell wouldn't care if I decided to label it a breed of poodle or something else.

We basically became "self-aware" and then immediately started overcomplicating everything. Honestly, the whole concept trips me out.
I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea that I'm just another animal in the food chain—just trying to keep life simple. Whether I'm actually pulling that off is debatable, much like whether anyone can actually apply what they learn in a textbook to the real world.

So yeah, that’s why I’m here bugging you guys.

edit: Oh, and he’d probably tell you: "Don't go labeling me as some kind of homo."

hey everyone

glad to see there are actually people here who want to get into a real discussion

@arna

you’re saying I should hit the books more, but look—I read plenty, I just don't find much joy in academic textbooks. Honestly, wouldn't you guys prefer debating someone who hasn't been "poisoned" by everyone else's preconceived notions and theories?

my brain tends to work in bursts, so putting together coherent, structured essays is a struggle for me. I’ve always found a direct, face-to-face conversation way easier to navigate

when I used the word "animals," I was mostly just poking the bear to see how people would react. what I’m actually getting at is why we all fight so hard to deny our own nature—why we insist we've somehow evolved past our ancestors when we really haven't

a buddy of mine once tried to argue that we aren't animals because we use tools. I just told him that chimpanzees use sticks to "fish" for ants, so that logic doesn't hold much water

I wasn't talking about my neighbors or anything local when I mentioned perception of surroundings; I meant anyone who isn't part of "us"
for instance: why hasn't anyone just told me to "stop talking nonsense" yet? instead, you're all asking polite questions. what was your actual gut reaction when you first saw my post?

ah, motives...

it's not about you telling me what your motives are; it's about you digging deeper into why you react the way you do. even I spend half my time lying to myself about why I do the things I do
