Carl Turner2 said:I’ve been hitting a bit of a wall lately with the IRS website, specifically when I try to sign my digital forms. It’s one of those maddening technical glitches where everything looks perfectly fine on the surface—all my digital certificates are installed, they show up clearly in the system, and everything seems to be in order. But the moment I actually attempt to sign and submit a document, I get slapped with that cryptic error message: "THE KEYSET IS NOT DEFINED." This has been happening consistently since I made the switch to Windows 8. I’ve tried reaching out to tech support at both my bank and even the help desks over at the IRS, but honestly, it feels like I'm just talking to a brick wall; nobody seems to have a clue how to resolve this specific headache.

From what I understand about using all these "e-government" apps, you aren't actually supposed to be using the latest versions of Windows, Internet Explorer, Adobe, and so on. I've been told that several times by people at the bank, so I play it safe and stick to older versions. It’s a bit nerdy, sure, but it keeps me from having any issues.
Starting an LLC: Where to begin? in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·

Sure, you can decide to take zero net pay as a CEO, but don't act shocked when the IRS comes knocking and asks for proof of how you actually pay your rent.
During my last audit—shout out to the inspector, she was actually great—she told me exactly that. An employee works for money; if there's no recorded salary, they're working for something else, and it's my job to figure out what that "something" is. 😉

And honestly, it makes perfect sense. It's the same logic applied to small business owners who supposedly "live off their revenue"... a concept that seems to escape a lot of people.

Carol Ward3 said:We’ve officially filed the paperwork to expand our LLC's business activities and submitted the application to the Secretary of State. I was wondering, though, when exactly can we actually start operating under those new categories if there aren't any specific regulatory hurdles to clear first? Is it possible to just dive right in, or am I stuck waiting around until the Secretary of State finally processes the filing and sends back the official decision?

You can start as soon as you submit the application.

Computers and smartphones have basically become an extension of my physical self at this point. If I don't have my laptop handy, I’ve got two phones in my hands. Between checking emails and staying on top of constant market updates, I'm always plugged in. My family thinks I'm losing it whenever they catch me glancing at my screen, but honestly, what choice do I have? This is just how my daily life functions now.

The folks over at Referentica seemed genuinely baffled by the whole situation, though they eventually just settled for filing everything manually on paper...

I honestly can’t make heads or tails of the logic here—they roll out these high-tech digital filing systems, and then immediately lock you out the second there's a hiccup. 🤷

Does the online filing system require a separate fee? Or does that only happen if you use their standalone app? I use my Chase card for all my monthly payments, and I handle everything through the various online portals—IRS, Social Security, Medicare, etc.—all via my Chase account. I’ve been doing this for years for myself and dozens of clients without ever paying extra for these services. Did the rules change recently, or are you guys just talking about using one specific platform exclusively?

You just take the payments specifically tied to the 2011 settlements, excluding any interest. Just make sure it's done before the deadline for filing the sales tax return.

I’ve already submitted everything for several of them electronically... payroll, tax returns, social security filings, sales tax... I actually sent over the George Floyd public disclosure info a while ago too, so I haven't even bothered sending the RDG or anything else to the IRS yet. If they decide to come knocking, I'll send it then. That’s exactly how I handled things last year, and nobody ever asked for a single thing or even gave me a call...
How to sign up for Medicare in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
Daniel Evans12 said:I was wondering—and I know this might be a bit of a long shot—but if I head in this Tuesday, April 10th, would I be able to backdate my pension and Medicare enrollments to Friday, April 6th? That’s the day I actually signed my employment contract, so I guess it makes sense to have everything line up from that date... what do you guys think?

You can. Just so you know for next time, the window for filing those registrations or terminations is eight days from whenever the contract is signed or ended.

I’m standing right behind what Kimberly Harris6 said. Honestly, the advice I've picked up in this thread has been worth its weight in gold. Also, a huge thanks to everyone here. 😉

Last🙂.. if anyone else tried to tell me what I just said, I’d say they were lying. Honestly, I think my headcount in that Section II area was off, which is why it kept throwing those errors. There isn't any other explanation for it.
Thanks..

Robert Martin27 said:If you just fill out Section III for the Contribution Calculations and absolutely nothing else—nothing at all!—it goes through perfectly every single time. That was exactly how I managed to get mine accepted! 😉

Well, nothing works... fine, I'll give it another shot. But before, the system kept throwing errors at me, claiming data was missing in one spot, then another, and so on...
I'm going to try again, I guess...
IRS and Tax Filing Issues in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
Robert Martin27 said:Oh, absolutely, you can definitely do that!
Just make sure you skip over the section regarding paid federal taxes and surcharges, and focus solely on the calculation portion.

That’s the thing, though—in this specific case, there wasn't actually a paycheck issued. If I look at Form ID under Section II, "Information on Paid Receipts and Tax Calculations," points 1 through 8 should all be left blank. All that needs filling out is Section III, "Contribution Calculations." But when I try to submit it like that... it gets rejected. I ended up submitting everything with the paid tax amount set to 0.00, but I have a feeling that's wrong since no actual payment took place. To make matters worse, the contact person at the client's office is such an unpleasant woman that I'm stuck with no one else to turn to for advice.😁

Absolutely nobody??? 🙂

amberbadger17 said:I could really use some help from anyone who actually knows what they're doing here. I run my own small business, and I’ve been using the electronic filing system through FINRA to submit my reports. But honestly, where am I supposed to be storing all these files? People on this forum keep mentioning CDs and USB drives, but I have no clue what that’s actually supposed to mean for me. Every month, I just print out whatever I submit. This month, I used the Regos RSM form and it went through just fine, but now I can't find that exact same form to print and attach. I thought I saved it in a folder on my computer, but every time I try to open it, I get this error saying the format is invalid—so how on earth did it pass the submission?! I am completely lost. I tried calling FINRA, but it's useless; every single agent is "busy." It’s official: I’m a total tech dinosaur. At this rate, I’d rather just carry stacks of paper over to Regos and the IRS myself. 🙂

I have all my RSM forms saved in the exact format I need to submit them, but there’s a catch—you can only open that specific document using Notepad. Here is how the process actually works: First, you take a printout of the original form from the software. After you submit the RSM and verify that everything looks correct on the sent form, you go back into the previewer, hit download, and grab this one file with an incredibly long, messy filename. Once you’ve got that file sitting on your computer, you head over to the signed file verification section and upload that long-named file you just saved. After you upload it, the verifier opens a page that shows exactly when Regos received it at the bottom. I just print that out and attach it to the form from the program. It basically serves as my substitute for an official Regos stamp. Just a heads up though: you can't download "Page B" from the application to make it look like the actual form.

Is it actually possible to file an ID form through the IRS portal if there weren't any actual payroll payments made? Has anyone here actually gone through the process of filing one like that?
IRS and Tax Filing Issues in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
Carol Ward3 said:I wonder how long the processing usually takes for corporate income tax returns and their various schedules. My forms have been stuck on "in progress" since February 21st, so I suppose there must be some reason why they're taking this much time to get through them 🙂

Honestly, I don't think they even look at them until the actual filing deadline hits. That's how it works when you submit sales tax or other filings through the IRS portal. You can file as early as you want, but they won't actually book it for a day or two after the official due date passes.

copperviper17 said:So, I just picked up a new client for this year, and while I was digging through their old files, I realized they totally botched an ID form back in October 2011... yeah, talk about a deep dive!
Now I'm sitting here wondering if I can just jump onto the IRS website and fix that mess electronically, or am I going to have to deal with the absolute nightmare of printing out paper forms? Also, does anyone know if the tax authorities even allow corrections for stuff that happened that far back, or am I chasing ghosts here?

It’s doable, but honestly, you should probably give your local agent a quick call first just to let them know why you're resubmitting the exact same ID. I’ve had to handle corrections like this before. Usually, they just void the old one and book the new one.

Carol Ward3 said:I have a quick question regarding the submission of non-standard documentation to the IRS: When I put together the necessary notes and resolutions alongside the financial reports to be submitted through the online portal, should I have them signed by the director or a board member first and then scan them into a PDF? Or is it acceptable to upload unsigned PDFs—provided they include the full name of the individual required to sign—and then handle the actual signing electronically during the final submission process?

Exactly... electronic signatures are perfectly valid here.

Carol Ward3 said:I wanted to ask a quick question regarding my setup. An electronic tax card has been issued in my name, even though I’m just an employee at the firm while my husband is actually the authorized representative. If we go through the process of submitting our paperwork to Goldman Sachs, would it be considered acceptable if the forms are signed via electronic signature by someone who isn't technically the legal director or the authorized agent? Or am I looking at a situation where I might need to officially register myself as an authorized person with the Secretary of State?

Look, the authorized official gave you power of attorney to sign off on things simply by having the card issued in your name. Assuming you included the power of attorney paperwork with the rest of your documentation sent to the IRS... there's really nothing to worry about. You don't need to go through the hassle of updating anything with the Secretary of State.

Supported operating systems include Windows 98, Windows Me (Millennium Edition), Windows 2000 (at least Service Pack 2), and Windows XP (Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2).

Don't just give me some half-baked excuse about how I won't be able to get this installed on Windows 7. 😢
Where am I even supposed to find a machine running those ancient versions of Windows these days?
My company actually went through the trouble of upgrading our tech to stay current, and now we’re being told we have to act like we're stuck in the past just to make this work. 🤷

Has anyone here actually dealt with this on Windows 7? 🙂

It works fine on Windows 7... I'm using it right now. These types of applications mostly just "dislike" the very latest versions of Explorer, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Java, and stuff like that. They still work, though they might stutter a bit since they haven't been fully optimized for newer builds yet. But generally speaking, it works without much trouble.
