Importing from China in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
Kimberly Robinson55 said:Hey there,

I'm looking to grab my husband a new DVD/LCD head unit for his car—it's the perfect fit for our model! I've found one on eBay for about $450, using PayPal for the checkout. Shipping is totally free, too. The seller is based out of China—specifically Shenzhen, Guangdong—and they offer a bunch of different shipping options. Aside from that, what else should I be looking out for? Is there any way to avoid customs fees or sales tax, or does stuff like this even get taxed at all? Any advice would be amazing!

Thanks so much in advance for the help!!! 😍

Kimberly Robinson55

There's no customs duty on items like that... but you still have to deal with sales tax, and if you try to be too cheap, you end up paying more for the "savings" in the long run.

so how is my company even supposed to pay me that money then? under the table? or what's the deal?

Well, they just pay your salary, and since payroll can't be handled in cash, it has to go straight into your Chase checking account.

Ethan Mitchell4 said:Is it just me, or is everyone else struggling with the IRS and Deloitte?
I’m honestly losing my mind here. I usually submit my ID forms at the start of the month and send everything over to Deloitte by the end,
but every single time, something goes wrong. Just today, I tried to run a test submission for a Deloitte form, and the second the Java window starts loading, all I get is a tiny little pop-up with a red 'X' in the top left corner.

I sent them a screenshot, and some woman called me back to walk me through it—telling me to click here, then click there—but obviously, nothing worked. Eventually, she just admitted she had no clue what was happening and said she’d email me some instructions. Honestly, those instructions are so poorly written that even a software engineer from MIT would probably struggle to make sense of them, let alone someone like me who isn't in tech.
So now what? She basically told me she doesn't know how to fix it and that I'll have to figure out the setup myself. As if! If I knew how to fix it, I wouldn't be calling her in the first place. To her, the problem is solved because she's off the hook.
And what about me? 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I sent my info over yesterday and everything went through smooth as silk. Not sure why you're hitting a wall🤷....it might just be a glitch with your computer or something, causing the block.

How’s everyone finding the IRS website today?
Is it acting up for anyone else, or is it just me?

Apache HTTP Server AT example.com port 443

Does anyone happen to know what might be causing this?🤷

I have no clue what's actually going on under the hood here, but honestly? If you haven't already, just shut the computer down completely and start from scratch. I know, I know—it sounds like one of those "have you tried turning it off and on again" clichés that everyone rolls their eyes at, but sometimes that's exactly what does the trick. It’s like when a car engine just needs a quick reset to stop acting finicky. It feels a bit silly, sure, but hey, it works sometimes!

Whenever I run into a glitch with the IRS website, I just take a quick PrintScreen of the error message and shoot it over to them via email. It’s super easy. info@example.comThey eventually give me a call back and help me sort everything out. Honestly, though, trying to get through to them on those 1-800 numbers is enough to drive anyone up the wall. You just sit there waiting forever. It’s like waiting in line at the DMV on a Monday morning—you know you have to do it, but the hold music just makes you lose your mind.

Just send over the correct one, give your caseworker a call, and let them know what's up.

Everything that used to be split up between III.1, III.2, and III.3 in the old version is just lumped together into one giant pile under III.1 in this new format? Seriously? 😕

Yeah,

Brian Campbell36 said:I have a question regarding this new PIN. It seems someone was messing around with my credentials and entered the wrong PIN for the IRS portal multiple times, which caused my account to get locked out automatically...
Now that I’ve finally been issued a new initial PIN, I find myself wondering: should I be using this new one exclusively? Specifically, when the system prompts me to sign an official document—which happens quite frequently—am I supposed to input this new PIN, or should I revert to the previous one?

Yep,

fadedsailor57 said:Quick question: is it actually legal for LLC founders to loan money back to their own company? If I’ve got this right, interest paid to a corporation counts as a business expense, but paying interest to individuals doesn't—at least not currently—count as taxable income?

Also, is there a cap on how high that interest rate can go?

Honestly, just give your LLC interest-free loans... calculating and paying out interest is going to cost you a fortune in taxes. It's better to skip that headache entirely.

Hey everyone, does anyone know what the deadline is for Google to accept GFI-POD for stats? I'm wondering if the window for data submission has already closed and now they're only taking stuff for public release.

Thomas Bishop3 said:If you're running a small business and have online banking, just grab a single certificate from the Federal Reserve $157 once a year. Once you get your card, you get free access to the IRS e-file system, social security, and healthcare portals. You don't even need Bloomberg services because your accountant can still handle things via paper, and those other Federal Reserve tools aren't necessary for a small operation like ours. 😎

Can someone explain what they mean by "free" if you're still being charged $157 annually—specifically $130 + sales tax? 😕 I’d much rather spend that money on a new pair of shoes. The reality is we’re being forced to use this electronic filing system, yet we're already drowning in high taxes and payroll contributions. By using the IRS e-file system, we're essentially just handing accountants a tool to monitor us more effectively so they don't have to actually sit down with their clients!
The IRS e-file website states: Certain commercial banks (like the Federal Reserve, a local community bank, Citigroup, or JPMorgan Chase) offer additional Federal Reserve certificates on their chip cards or other storage media alongside the standard bank certificates; these can be used for various IRS electronic services. On the Wells Fargo website, it clearly states that the B2G service is billed at $17 monthly + sales tax.
But on the IRS e-file site itself, there isn't a single price list, no warning about the costs, and no mention that there's even a charge involved! Just imagine if we had been paying extra for a clerk to manually stamp our tax returns all this time!!!! A human being definitely costs more than a mass-market software program and a USB stick!!!!!! 🙂

That fee only applies if you're using Federal Reserve services, but for the IRS e-file, you pay $0.00.

briskjackal9 said:If I go the single-member LLC route, can I give the company a loan first and then sell my equipment as an individual? Like, could I lowball the value to maybe $1667 bucks just to keep the asset value on the books super low? Also, does it matter if I don't have actual receipts for the old gear??

Just sell the gear to the LLC using a basic bill of sale. Once your LLC actually starts seeing some real cash flow, you can just pay yourself back for what the company bought from you. There’s really no need to mess around with a formal loan and then deal with the paperwork of a sale later...

And honestly, why would you want to lower the equipment value? That seems counterproductive. You'll actually want to lean on depreciation to help lower your taxable income at the end of the year...

A business can't just be "dormant" in this context.

If you know someone with the right certification, just give them power of attorney (tomorrow, the 29th). They can get all the tax filings and paperwork submitted by the 30th, and then you won't be late.

There’s a ton of stuff changing, but even the instructors at these things are walking on eggshells with their explanations since the actual law hasn't even been passed yet. 🙂
And honestly? I have a feeling we’ll be waiting forever for the formal regulations to drop, too.

Since my work involves dealing with the European Union quite a bit, I’ve already bookmarked the sites I’m going to need:

The site for checking a taxpayer's status:
http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/

European Union regulations and case law:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/

http://curia.europa.eu/jcms/jcms/j_6/

Directive 2006/112/EC
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/...01:0118:en:PDF

I actually managed to find a translation earlier:

That’s awesome! You'll have to give us the lowdown on what they teach you. 🙂

Is there any way to change the PIN after the fact?

I went through this whole thing back in early 2012, so honestly, my memory of the exact steps is a little fuzzy now.
