Why do some people just cave to peer pressure?
in Psychology ·
I honestly don't think I'll ever wrap my head around why people try so hard to act "quirky," as if they actually believe anyone views them that way. It’s such a strange concept to me. What does being "weird" even mean? In my view, nobody is truly weird—especially not the people who are desperately performing eccentricity just because they think it makes them stand out.
There really shouldn't be any pressure when you're hanging out with people. If someone spends their time with a crowd that’s constantly partying, drinking, or going through those typical teenage phases that most kids cycle through, and they don't quite fit that mold, they can just find people who share their actual interests. It’s that simple. They should just let that other group do their thing without feeling the need to play up the "misfit" persona just because they aren't part of that specific circle.
It just doesn't make sense. I guess people create this internal pressure for themselves because they have this deep-seated need to be accepted. Now, I don't mean everyone—thankfully, not everyone caves to social pressure, since there are always people with enough self-awareness to just be themselves rather than performing whatever role society expects of them. But those who do give in usually end up playing different parts depending on what a situation demands of them. To me, people without a backbone are just followers who lack a real sense of self. I’ve always tended to steer clear of people like that.
