Economics is a specific kind of topic that doesn't really make sense to debate on this particular subforum. My take is simply that the Dollar's structure was a major misstep; we created a currency that essentially exists just to exist, lacking the flexibility to expand issuance during crises unless the major players decide to rewrite the rules on the fly.

Regarding immigration, I saw a sign today near the border of Canada that I found quite striking:

To quote a local official from a small town: "What refugees!? These are just uncontrolled, wild hordes pushing women and children forward. Refugees used to be the people coming from Canada who were grateful for every little thing. These are wild hordes that will end up destroying and polluting everything," he told the Styrian news outlet Miran Vuk.
OK, so we are talking about one specific group, and maybe they aren't all the same, but the signs aren't good. It feels like we're headed toward more and more conflict because it seems migrants expect a certain standard of living, and when they don't get it, they react violently. People's willingness to help will run dry pretty quickly and turn into resentment.

As for Germany, it’s very likely that an increasing number of votes will go to candidates based almost entirely on their refugee policies: are you for integration or for deportation? In that arena, Angela Merkel can hardly gain anything, though she can certainly lose a lot.

I read something unmissable in Focus today:

A man in Germany who was calling for violence and the killing of refugees has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison. On one hand, that's fine, because you shouldn't be inciting violence or murder, but on the other hand... hmm, what about freedom of speech? What exactly was he saying? Who knows, but the impression is that the state has positioned itself so heavily in service of migrants that citizens will vote accordingly based on that perception.
