Chime: My experience so far in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Kevin Morris12 said:Personally, I’m hoping they won't implement any.

Usually, whenever anyone asks why card top-ups aren't an option, they just deflect by asking if you have card top-up functionality enabled on your bank account at your local branch. 🤣 Since Chime isn't just some niche fintech or payment app but an actual bank, card top-ups shouldn't even be part of the conversation. It looks like they might finally be changing their tune, though...

We've all seen it happen—we're living in an era where massive corporations have completely tanked themselves because they were too stuck in their old ways and refused to lean into new trends. To put it bluntly, if you can't adapt to the way the world is moving, you're basically dead in the water.

I guess they finally realized how things actually ought to work if you want them to be "simple."

Honestly, if they don't get this integrated with Google Pay, the whole thing is basically a non-starter. A total swing and a miss.

I honestly thought they were supposed to offer something more revolutionary than what we already have. Maybe I'm just wrong, but it doesn't really feel like much of a disruption to me.

It’s just not going to happen. It’s like that whole situation when they introduced competition in the energy market; only a tiny fraction of people actually switched, while everyone else didn't even bother moving from Duke Energy to Happy. We'll probably see a bigger shift with Gen X, though, mostly because they don't have the patience to deal with all the red tape at those old-school legacy banks.

Michelle Davis15 said:Can someone give me the lowdown in just two or three sentences on why anyone would bother opening an account with Chime? I mean, every bank out there offers payment processing, they all have cards, digital banking is standard now... so what's the actual draw? Is it just about lower fees, or is there something else to it? Basically, what’s the "hook" that makes it worth the effort to actually go through the process of opening an account? Thanks

Well, you're covered up to $100k by the FDIC, and they’re pretty much the go-to because they offer both Chase Maestro and Mastercard options. From what I gather looking through various threads online, people don't seem to be tearing them apart like they do with the big traditional banks; it's mostly just minor details at that point. Honestly, most of the folks I know working across the States use it as their primary account for direct deposit.

I'm thinking about using Chime, Wise, or maybe Curve.

Or just stick to my standard Visa or Mastercard debit cards.

Maybe grab a Reddit R master or a Visa Plus—just some extra Visa backup, heaven forbid. And make sure you're paying with NFC; it's basically mandatory these days.

cosmichawk67 said:Ultimately, it all comes down to individual needs. I don't use their services personally, but consider someone tied to Wells Fargo because of a mortgage who is currently paying for overpriced premium bundles; in that context, it isn't entirely irrational.

It becomes even more logical if you also utilize another service from the NYSE. In that case, for $5.00, you receive checking, foreign currency, and savings accounts, along with 10 included transactions (which includes 3 free ATM withdrawals at any machine in the US or the European Union)... all things considered, it isn't completely useless, as no bank in the US offers everything listed here for that specific price point.

Furthermore, it seems that even within Wells Fargo, half the staff is either unaware this service exists or intentionally pushes more expensive packages instead.

We're lucky that we actually have options here. Personally, I refuse to let them rip me off or act like I'm desperate for their services; once they change their attitude toward customers, then maybe we can talk. Since Chime is free, any extra fee tacked onto a service—no matter how tiny it seems—just feels fundamentally pointless to me.

analogjackal11 said:Has anyone else tried setting up their mobile banking on iOS (13.3) lately? For some reason, the main “Activate Mobile Banking” button just won't respond, even though everything else seems fine 🤔

I already tried deleting the app and restarting my phone, but I guess it’s still just doing the same thing...

Look, you've got all these powerhouse cards and apps out there that actually function perfectly fine, so why bother wrestling with this half-baked product 😁 unless they're paying you handsomely to act as a volunteer beta tester.

analogjackal11 said:I think Wells Fargo is running some kind of deal on their mobile banking right now where you don't get charged any fees for the first three months, I guess.

Honestly, looking at all these options alongside the ones that are actually free, none of this really makes sense to me; it doesn't check a single one of my boxes.

The thing is, when you’re going through the registration process, they don't actually offer shipping to Italy. It's kind of a headache, but what you have to do is select Austria as your location, and then when it comes time to input the delivery details for the card, just type in this
Your Name
Address __
1000 Los Angeles, USA

Since there isn't a strict validation check for the zip code, the card ends up arriving regardless of the fact that the postal code is technically "wrong" or that you listed Austria. It works out in the end.

Even if I did, I’d have to cancel my Chime premium membership. There's no point in paying for both.

it feels like things have finally settled into a routine, and honestly, I've basically reached "endgame" status since my specific spending habits are way more intense than the average person's out there. My go-to battle kit is pretty much a Chase Visa paired with a Wells Fargo Mastercard—that covers 99% of my life, really. Most of my daily transactions just fly through via Google Pay with the Visa or Mastercard, and then the Visa handles all my automatic top-ups without me thinking twice. But, you know, just in case a terminal decides to act up or if I find myself somewhere that hasn't quite caught up to contactless tech yet, I always keep both physical cards tucked away in my wallet just to be safe.

The golden rule is pretty simple: whenever a new update drops for anything at all, you just sit tight and let everyone else be the guinea pigs by testing it out for you first.

You can easily set up a SoFi account using American documents, but there's a little catch: you'll need a physical address in one of the eligible countries where they can ship your card. If you happen to have a friend out there, you could just have it sent to their place, or even use a mail forwarding service that ships to the US. SoFi won't ever ask you to verify that specific location later on. In the app, it’s listed as your "card shipping address" rather than your permanent residential address. I've also noticed some people use a workaround where they select a different country but enter their US details—for instance, listing something like "John Doe, Broadway, New York, NY, USA"—and the card still arrives without any issues.

I know this is technically off-topic, but I figured I'd try to help out.

Using PayPal for parking is basically like buying a pack of stale crackers...it's the same shady crew running the show under the hood.

briskcanyon12 said:Why on earth wouldn't you grab a quick $33 that’s basically just sitting there for the taking? It requires next to zero effort and won't cost you a dime.

Step One
Sign up for Chime using this link: https://revolut.com/referral/goranjeh7!a13221. $18
Step Two
Get registered with PayPal https://www.curve.app/en/—make sure you use the code DWG7GXOE during registration to snag about $5 $14 right off the bat.
Step Three
Link your Chime card to your PayPal account and go make some purchases at three stores of your choice—think places like Walmart, McDonald's, IKEA, or Amazon Uber. For every purchase you make over a three-month period, you'll get 1% cashback.
Step Four
Once that three-month window closes, take whatever you've accumulated from the PayPal card (that initial $5 plus your 1% cashback from those three stores) and transfer it back over to Chime. From there, you can convert it into USD at a decent rate. (And look, if anyone is in a rush, you can move that initial $5 immediately after your first purchase.)
Step Five
Then, either toss those cards aside or just keep using them for the actual services they provide.

On top of what you mentioned, $33 I'm throwing in an extra 15 EUR for anyone looking to grab some MONESE. Just shoot me a PM and I'll send over the code for the 15 EUR; honestly, you might as well take it for yourself since you don't have it in your collection yet. :-)
