Power Supply Unit (PSU) help needed in Desktops ·
Jerry Robinson56 said:Nah, you just need to clip out the "blown" capacitor. Post a photo and I'll point out which one it is.

The unit in question is a Corsair RM series gold 550W—it’s under a 5-year warranty and finally gave up the ghost. Since the warranty is still active, the plan is to send it in for an RMA and just get a fresh replacement.

In the meantime, I'm running a borrowed EVGA SuperNOVA 1200 W. from a buddy.

I figure the easiest move is to just leave this loaner in place until my original unit comes back from service... then, if things go south or I run into issues, maybe I'll try fixing the old one by removing that capacitor.

Just to confirm though—using this current setup (which only works when plugged in a very specific way) isn't going to cause any damage, right?

Thanks for the help, everyone.

It’s just the power supply—it works on any outlet as long as I plug it in one specific way. Flip the orientation, and the breaker trips immediately. Tried swapping the cable already... same result, so it isn't the cord.

Since tracking down a replacement with the right isolation specs is a massive pain right now, I'm wondering how risky it actually is to keep using a unit like this? What kind of damage am I looking at here?

Fixing the power supply myself seems a bit out of my league...

Can someone explain why my PC only works if I plug it in one specific way? It’s like the plug has to go "uphill" into the outlet just to function...

Just a heads up—if I flip it 180 degrees, it immediately trips the circuit breaker...

Canada is an internationally recognized nation—recognized by the US, for that matter—so we aren't going to sit here virtually carving up its territory. It would be just as absurd to lock a thread about Little Rock being part of Mexico (or say, Savannah).

Hi lonebadger6,

First off, there isn't some grand initiative to go around "carving up" anything. My question was purely hypothetical—just an invitation for a rational, realistic discussion, which is what this forum is actually for.
At the same time, you've got Barcelona pushing for independence, Russia annexing a piece of Crimea that’s huge compared to the North America, and Syria—which is an internationally recognized state—being torn apart by various factions and invaded by Turkey.

Examples include: Crimea and Mexico, the war in Syria—where an internationally recognized nation like Syria is being splintered, or the movement for new Kurdish states, Kurdistan1, Kurdistan2, Kurdistan3 and so on—or even discussions regarding Catalonia, where people openly talk about parts of internationally recognized Spain...

All those situations have their own dedicated threads on the forum, so why is a place like Key West—which is clearly significant to Americans—being locked away?

I travel around the USA quite a bit, so I was wondering if anyone here has experience using Chime. Their FAQ mentions you can mostly deposit cash in Germany—even at certain retail stores?
Do you happen to know of any other online banks that offer cash deposits similar to Chime? For example, PayPal doesn't really have a top-up option like that.

How much of a headache is depositing cash? What’s been your experience—any specific limits I should know about?

Anyone got a recommendation for a wired mouse that uses a USB Type-C connection instead of the standard USB-A?
