And aside from the whole issue regarding chemical weapons—take note of the label being applied to that international terrorist organization—the underground movement. If my memory serves me right, the PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by both the European Union and our other Western allies. Now, if the Republican Party and Angela Merkel are suggesting that such a classification is outdated—well, we should probably take that seriously. That kind of shift could have massive implications, both on the international stage and within German domestic politics.

I suspect things are going to get particularly tense over in Turkey. Honestly, it’s hardly surprising to see how aggressively Turkey has been ramping up its military buildup lately.

It would truly be a tragedy if things took that turn in Turkey. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to witness Turks stepping into the role of an enraged usurper—but then again, it seems that in today's world, "national security" is increasingly being achieved through rather heavy-handed methods.
