Alprazolam, also known under the trade names Xanax and Ativan, is a short-acting drug of the benzodiazepine class used to treat moderate to severe anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and as an adjunctive treatment for anxiety associated with moderate depression. It is also available in an extended release form, Xanax XR. Both forms are now available generically. Alprazolam possesses anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, amnesic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant properties.[3]
Alprazolam is a potentially addictive drug and long term use of alprazolam may cause a physical dependence to develop and benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome to appear during discontinuation. In the USA, alprazolam is the most commonly misused benzodiazepine and is a Schedule IV controlled drug.[
I'm speaking from my own experience and what I've seen with patients. Forget what Wikipedia says—the reality is that you can actually function the next morning after taking Xanax. Some other sedatives or things like Sanval don't have the same effect. Patients wake up with dizziness or headaches. Not everyone, but some people handle them poorly. It’s also very easy to get hooked on alprazolam. It creates dependency.
The 2 mg XR doses release slowly and have a longer-lasting effect. 👍
Not everything in Wikipedia is accurate. That stuff is too general. Real-world practice is completely different. We even have a woman on this forum who takes four Sanval and still can't sleep. Everything is individual. Medicine isn't math.👍😉
