The death of the cable bundle? in Hobbies & Leisure ·
I feel like every time I turn around, there's a new way to "save" money by grouping services together, but it usually just feels like they're trying to lock me into another subscription. Is anyone actually finding these bundles worth it lately, or are we all just better off with individual streaming apps?
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Hey there::::
Is there actually any way—any possible workaround—to get 64-bit software running on a 32-bit version of Windows 7?

Give it a shot and see if you can burn something with it. If you run into the same headache, just search Google. Honestly, I can't find any drivers or firmware for this specific model anywhere...

Hey there...
So, I've got a Dell DVD writer sitting in my desktop rig running Windows 7 32-bit. Lately, I've been hitting a wall with burning discs—it keeps asking me for a firmware update.
Here’s the weird part: when I burn something using Nero 7, the process seems to finish perfectly. The drive says everything went fine, and if I look at the disc, you can actually see the data was written. But then, when I try to pop it back in to actually play it? Nothing. It acts like the disc is totally blank and keeps throwing an error message at me to format the disc.
Any idea what could be going on?
Question about the iPod Nano tablet in Laptops ·
Hi there.
I've got an iPod Nano that’s acting up—it just won't boot. It powers on, shows the logo, and then... nothing. Just stays stuck right there.
I tried getting into the settings using the power and volume up buttons, but no luck. It just sits on that logo screen indefinitely.
Is there any way to fix this, or should I just toss it in the trash? Is it a lost cause?
Thanks.
RAM upgrade question in Hardware ·
The guy above responded to me saying that if I tried to use DDR3, the processor wouldn't even work.
Well, it’s just common sense, really. That processor is too old to handle DDR3, so there's no way it would even run.
RAM upgrade question in Hardware ·
So, why wouldn't I just go with DDR3?
RAM upgrade question in Hardware ·
It isn't new RAM. Honestly, my computer was running perfectly fine with this memory until just a little while ago. And no, I didn't grab it from eBay. I'm pretty sure Transcend is a solid, reliable brand when it comes to RAM.
I'm just a bit confused... if the stick is actually faulty, how on earth am I still able to see it listed in the BIOS?
RAM upgrade question in Hardware ·
Transcend DDR2 800 MHz. 2GB.
AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual Core 6000
Everything was working perfectly fine on this RAM until just a little while ago.

Hey there...
I’ve run into a bit of a puzzle that I can't quite wrap my head around.
Whenever I slot this specific 2GB DDR2 RAM module into the motherboard, nothing happens. No image on the monitor, no attempt to boot into Windows—nothing. So, my first thought was, okay, this stick is definitely dead.
But here's the weird part: when I swap in a known working stick and jump into the BIOS, the system actually recognizes and reads the "broken" RAM perfectly fine. It just refuses to actually launch Windows once that module is involved.
Does this mean the RAM is truly faulty, or am I looking at some kind of glitch with the motherboard or the BIOS settings?
Also, I spotted some 2GB Kingston DDR3 1600MHz RAM for $47. Meanwhile, the 2GB DDR2 800MHz sticks are going for $83. Why is that? What’s the actual difference, and which one would be the better move to install?
I mean, shouldn't DDR3 be more expensive since it's newer?
The motherboard I'm using is an ASRock N68C-GS FX.
THANKS...
Laptop LCD display issues in Laptops ·
Hey there,
I have a Dell Inspiron with a cracked screen, and I actually managed to find a used replacement part from an HP laptop lying around.
Since I really don't want to tear my Dell apart right now, I was wondering if anyone knows if I can just swap the HP display into it? Are the connector slots compatible, and would it even fit properly inside the casing?
The HP display model info is: HP H/W:C4 N1556B6-L0A Rev: C3

It's just an old machine. I'm only putting XP on it because it's definitely not built to handle any newer versions of Windows.

The 3 GB barrier

In the world of computing, the "3 GB barrier" describes a specific bottleneck found in certain 32-bit operating systems running on x86 microprocessors. Basically, it stops the OS from accessing the full 4 GB (4 × 1024³ bytes) of available RAM. The actual limit can shift depending on your motherboard setup and how your I/O devices—especially video RAM—are configured; you might see anything from 2.75 GB up to 3.5 GB. This issue disappears entirely if you move to a 64-bit processor with a 64-bit operating system, or if you're using specific x86 hardware paired with Linux or certain builds of Windows Server and macOS that take full advantage of physical address extension (PAE) mode on x86.

Ugh, my English is pretty rough, so it would really help if someone could explain this in American terms.
I'm running 32-bit Windows. But before, it used to show me over 4 GB of RAM, and my motherboard actually supports up to 8GB of expansion.
Which one is more accurate? What the BIOS shows, or what the OS shows? Like, how much RAM is the OS actually working with?

Hey there... just saying hello.

I have a question regarding some RAM.

So, I just installed 4 GB of RAM into my desktop. Everything looks fine in the BIOS—it actually recognizes the full 4096 MB. But then... once I boot up into Windows XP? My system properties are just telling me I only have 3.12 GB available. What gives?
I honestly can't wrap my head around it. I just... I don't know why.
So, just to clarify... the setup currently has one 2GB stick and two 1GB sticks installed.
P.S. Once I pull out one of those 1GB sticks, it shows up as only 3 GB of RAM.

wearymason4 said:Look, needing to use a USB drive isn't necessarily a bug... there's probably a solid reason behind it.
I’m guessing the software won't even run without it because it's hardcoded to look for a physical "key" plugged into the USB port.

ps: You might actually be able to see what's inside if you go into your File Explorer settings and check the boxes to show "hidden files" and "protected operating system files"—assuming the partition on the drive isn't hidden and the data isn't encrypted.

I honestly think there's a hidden partition involved and the data is encrypted, since I can't find anything at all even though it really should be showing up somewhere..
Is there any way to make it visible?

Hey everyone...

I’m not entirely sure if this is the right sub for this, but I have a question regarding a USB drive..

So, I have this USB stick that acts as a "software key." It's what unlocks my software so the full version actually works on my PC.

Here's the thing: I really want to move that "software key" directly onto my computer. I'm tired of having to leave the stick plugged into the port all the time. But there's a catch—whenever I plug the stick in, I hear the Windows startup sound and the program recognizes it immediately, but the drive itself doesn't show up anywhere in my file explorer. Since I can't actually see the drive, I have no idea how to access the files to transfer them.

Is there any way to actually find this stick in my system so I can copy the contents over to my hard drive?

Thanks..
Issues with my Dell laptop in IT Support ·
Hey everyone...

I've got a Dell Inspiron 15 here, and I'm running into a bit of a headache—the keyboard just isn't responding at all.

Honestly, I'm a little lost on where to even begin. I can't tell if I somehow toggled a setting in the software, or if the keyboard itself finally gave up the ghost, or if we're looking at a motherboard issue.

Quick side note: the touchpad is working perfectly fine, and some of my function keys actually respond, but the numbers and basically everything else? Nothing.

Power supply recommendations? in Hardware ·
Hey everyone,

I’ve got this tester shown in the photo I just uploaded, and for the first time, I'm seeing some readings that I don't quite wrap my head around. I'm really worried about how bad the damage to my power supply might be.

Basically, the +3.3V reading and that 5Vsb line are jumping around—hitting +5.3V one second—while the +3.3V stays stuck at a constant high. If anyone could tell me if this indicates a major failure or what exactly might be going wrong here, I'd really appreciate it.

P.S. On top of all that, Bill Gates is making this weird sound (intermittent, then suddenly constant).

Thanks...
I'm having trouble uploading the image, so I'm really hoping you guys can make sense of what I'm describing.
