Visa Prepaid Refresh card in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Frank Walker2 said:Hi everyone, I have a quick question, and if anyone happens to know the answer, it would be a massive help. I’m still pretty much a novice when it comes to all this card and banking stuff... Basically, I set up a Visa Prepaid Card at Wells Fargo specifically so I could shop on eBay, and so far, it’s been working perfectly. Now, I find myself in a situation where I’m trying to sell something, and someone needs to send me a payment. So, I was wondering: can they actually transfer money directly onto this prepaid card? I assume it's possible, but then there's my second issue. There are two different numbers on the card—one long one above my name and a shorter one below my name. Which one of those is the actual card number I should give to the buyer so they can pay me? :S I really hope I've made sense here. My humble self would be incredibly grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. 😁

Right now, PayPal only allows withdrawals to Visa cards. Consequently, you won't even be able to process a payout to this particular card. You'll see that clearly once you log in to PayPal.

Maybe it might be easier to just open a standard checking account at somewhere like JPMorgan Chase instead.

PayPal only settles onto a Visa card, and this one is a Mastercard...

There aren't any fees for moving money between your own accounts. Though, I have to admit, I'm a bit confused about why you'd want to move funds from checking to savings 🙂
usually people are doing the exact opposite 🙂

You have to head down to the branch and fill out an application—it usually takes about ten days for the card to actually arrive.

Well, it didn't work for me on this specific card—though, interestingly enough, the refund did hit my debit card from a different bank.

A USD checking account? Because their website still claims there is a monthly fee $3.00 for those. For foreign currency accounts, they don't charge you $1.75 as long as your average balance stays above $1,000 for the month.
And honestly—I am fairly certain they hit you with a fee $3.00 regardless of whether you actually used the account or not. I have no idea why you aren't being charged, but hey, lucky you 😍

I know RBC and Raiffeisen have those little workarounds based on transaction volume, but from what I gather, Zabka doesn't play that game.

Well, luck is a funny thing. 🙂
It sounds like a glitch in the system.

I personally know some colleagues over at Chase who haven't been hit with online banking transfer fees for years now. 🙂

If anyone else is getting this kind of "luck," my advice is to stay quiet and enjoy it while it lasts.

Hannah Palmer6 said:My Visa Prepaid Gift Card finally showed up today, but when I tried to link it to my PayPal account, it wouldn't let me. What gives? Is it because I haven't loaded any cash onto it yet, or is there something else going on?

You actually need to have some cash on that card—PayPal usually runs a tiny temporary charge to verify things.

After that, you'll have to wait for your statement to show up or head down to your local bank to grab the specific PayPal transaction ID needed to authorize the card.

Just a heads-up: that small amount stays sitting in your PayPal balance, since they can't exactly bounce it back onto a prepaid card.

It looks like my overdraft protection has been activated, and it seems like they're setting aside $20...
To give you some context, I carry both a Mastercard and a Maestro card. My relationship with the bank is pretty basic—they just deposit my paycheck into my checking account and I withdraw it from there. I also have a laptop I'm paying off in installments via my Mastercard, and occasionally I just hit up an ATM when I need some cash. Aside from that, I don't really do anything else with my finances. So, I guess the question is, do I actually need this overdraft protection and that extra buffer of $20?

Honestly, I think a standard payment assistant service should be more than enough for $6.75 a month. Keep in mind you'll still have to pay that annual fee for the Mastercard, but overall, it’ll end up being cheaper than opting for the full Zaba fan bundle.

With the basic assistant, you get five commission-free transfers through online banking. The Zaba fan package bumps that up to seven.

One other thing—if you maintain a standalone checking account, they tend to charge a separate fee for it $1.75 every month. With the assistant package, both your domestic and foreign currency accounts are already covered.

Lawrence Cruz said:NO, they absolutely cannot freeze an account just for that reason. Honestly, I don't understand where people get this nonsense from.

They might eventually remove someone from the Zaba fan program, and even then, only if they notice a regular paycheck hitting the account. How is a bank supposed to know someone isn't a student anymore?

Right, they won't block it; they'll just transition it to a standard checking account and start charging the regular service fees accordingly.

Larry Howard4 said:So, I’ve still got my student checking account, even though I haven't been in school for over a year now. A few times at Chase, they've asked if I wanted to switch to a standard account, and every single time I just end up grabbing a handful of flyers like I actually need to go home and deliberate on which banking package fits my soul better. Recently, a friend of mine who works over at Wells Fargo told me I should probably just head in and fix it, because apparently, they can actually freeze your account just to force your hand on the matter. Is that for real? Can they actually pull a move like that?

Of course they can—it’s pretty straightforward logic, really. Once you lose your student status, you lose access to all those specific perks (think discounted bus passes, cheaper high-speed internet, etc.), and that applies to your banking too.

Your best bet is probably a basic checking account; it's usually the cheapest way to go. 🙂
