Look, I’m certainly no psychiatrist or clinical psychologist, but if you ask me, I truly believe he was incredibly aware of everything he was doing and had a crystal-clear understanding of his own methods. There’s no way he would have gone through all that effort to isolate himself from the neighbors without knowing exactly what was going on. At the end of the day, the SS knew exactly what they were doing when they set up those concentration camps, even though they went to great lengths to keep it hidden from the public for so long.
If you really want my two cents, I wouldn't even bother sending him to a mental asylum; I’d just say he deserves a bullet to the head—though honestly, even that feels like a punishment that's far too light for someone like him.
