I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the concept of civic identity and how much we, as fans, tie our own sense of pride to the specific icons who happen to live in our zip codes. It’s a weird psychological phenomenon, right? We treat these people like they are extensions of our own character. If our local hero is winning, we’re walking a little taller in the grocery store line. If they’re struggling, it feels like a personal slight against the whole metropolitan area.

But lately, I’ve been wondering if that connection is becoming more fragile, or if it’s actually getting more intense because of how much "movement" there is in professional sports. We used to have these eras where certain legends felt permanent. They were part of the architecture of the city. You’d grow up, go to college, and they’d still be the face of the franchise. Now, it feels like the landscape shifts every few seasons. It’s like trying to build a sense of community on shifting sands.

What really gets me is the ripple effect this has on other local legends. I was watching a clip the other day where a local icon from a completely different sport was talking about how hyped they were to have a new superstar arrive in town. It was a cool moment, sure, but it also made me realize how much "cross-pollination" happens between fanbases. It’s not just about one team anymore; it’s about the "vibe" of the entire city. When a massive name lands in a certain neighborhood, it changes the energy of the streets, the bars, and even how people from other sports disciplines interact with one another. It creates this weird, temporary unified front that can feel both exhilarating and totally superficial.

Is it genuine solidarity, or is it just collective hype? I look at cities like Philly or Chicago, where the sports culture is basically the heartbeat of the social scene, and I see how much weight is placed on these arrivals. It’s almost like a cultural infusion. A new superstar doesn't just bring talent; they bring a new narrative for the city to consume. It gives everyone a common language for a few months. But then, the novelty wears off, the wins or losses start piling up, and that "unified city" feeling can evaporate overnight.

I also wonder about the ethics of it—the way we expect these individuals to "adopt" our identity. We want them to embrace our grit, our specific brand of toughness, or our unique way of celebrating. We want them to be "one of us." But at the end of the day, these people are global entities. They are moving pieces in a massive entertainment machine. Can you really expect someone who operates on a global scale to truly integrate into the soul of a specific municipality? Or are we just using them as avatars for our own desire to feel relevant on a national stage?

I’ve felt this personally. I remember being so invested in a certain player that when they moved on, I felt a genuine sense of mourning, almost like a friend had moved away. It’s a bit silly when you step back and look at it, but the emotional investment is real. We tie our local ego to these people, and when the roster changes, our collective ego takes a hit.

It makes me think about the long-term implications for city branding. If a city becomes known as a "destination" for greatness, does that actually change the culture, or does it just make it a more expensive, more transient place to live? Does the arrival of a titan actually elevate the spirit of the local citizens, or does it just create a temporary fever dream that leaves everyone feeling empty once the season ends?

I'm curious to hear what you all think. Do you feel that "unified city" energy when a massive new name arrives in your area, regardless of what sport they play? Or do you think that kind of cross-sport excitement is just hype that doesn't actually mean anything for the local community?

Personally, the only reason I dry the laundry indoors is because we live out in the country where the ragweed and other airborne allergens are just brutal, and I definitely don't want my kid dealing with allergy issues right out of the gate.

Honestly, my partner and everyone else has been driving me crazy about this. They really think we should just wait until the baby arrives before buying anything, which would be a total disaster 🙄. That’s why we don't have a stroller, crib, or changing table yet (we actually found some stuff today since I insisted we get things ready now). We do have the tiny clothes and small essentials, though.
I can't exactly imagine him managing everything alone while I'm stuck in the hospital for three days...
Kate Bennett said:One of the more nonsensical pieces of advice I've ever heard is to sleep as much as possible now because you won't be able to later. If someone could actually explain the mechanics of how one is supposed to "stockpile" enough sleep today to last through the future, I would be eternally grateful. As it stands, I am sleeping whenever I can and whenever it is necessary; there is simply no logical reason to spend my entire life in bed just on the assumption that I won't be allowed to rest later.🙄

I'm wondering the same thing... how does everyone think they can just bank sleep for later? 🙄

I’ve noticed a pattern where some moms tend to mirror the behavior of others, only to completely vanish from the community once certain situations start to unfold.
Isn't it interesting how people can pick up on someone's vibe just through text alone? Whether it's positive or negative, you can really feel it.

Well, you can always just skip over them and not read them at all... 😉

There's always going to be stuff like that everywhere, even right here on our favorite forum... 🤷 (especially with pregnant women dealing with all those hormones... 😂)

So, the laws don't bother me...
I'm just looking at this from a layman's perspective...

I really have to weigh in on this. I’m Catholic, sure, but I don't see what religion has to do with any of this. This law applies to everyone. And honestly, not even all Catholics think alike—some might try to start families this way while others might "give up" on having kids because they think that's God's will.

And that whole line about pedophiles and rapists is just an exaggeration, totally unnecessary...

I'm signing off from these kinds of debates, I've already shared my thoughts on this law

So, why is everyone pushing for conception so hard?
It feels like people have this insecurity if they don't have their own biological kid.
Like it gives them some kind of social status they couldn't get otherwise...
Kind of like how many women act when they want a huge wedding...
To me, it just looks like running away from reality.
Just "hurry up and conceive" so people stop asking questions... Or so they don't feel different from the crowd...

I’m not here to argue about why one person thinks one way and another thinks differently, but you can't tell me a child in a domestic partnership won't be surrounded by just as much love as one in a marriage. Just like everything else, it's individual and every situation is unique. Sometimes one is better, sometimes the other... Who am I to judge a bad relationship or a marriage? But you shouldn't judge a domestic partnership either.

I'm not judging why you'd prefer adoption over medical assistance... that's your call. And that's exactly what we're talking about here—choice. Everyone has a right to choose, and that's why there's so much noise surrounding this law.

For me, having a child means everything... it gives my life purpose. Teaching them, loving them, learning from them... it's soul-filling. You're wrong if you think having a biological child is about prestige or image. If that's how you view people, then you're definitely being judgmental. And again, there are all kinds of people out there, but I truly believe people want kids because they want to share love and goodness with the world, not for social standing.

Getting back to the point of this topic, which is the right to choose for couples struggling to conceive. That choice needs to exist.

To all you people who would never dream of trying IVF—not naming names, obviously—first off, let's get one thing straight: it’s not "artificial," it's medically assisted fertility. And just like someone else said here, I'll see you when you're struggling to conceive. There's nothing unnatural about it; it's just a little help from doctors to make sure everything falls into place. But honestly, I don't really care what you think. I have relatives who had kids through assisted reproduction, and there is seriously no better feeling in the world than having a child, no matter how it happens. Plus, they're all perfectly healthy, so that whole argument about sick babies is just total nonsense (and not just because I say so)...
And if you think this is playing God, then why don't you feel that way about treating any other illness, from the flu to something much more serious? If God intended for you to be sick, then don't seek treatment. The same logic applies here. But I won't go too far off topic...

Regarding unmarried couples, someone mentioned them and tried to compare them to same-sex unions. Honestly, that person needs to rethink the nonsense they're posting. Is having a mom and a dad really the same as having two moms (or two dads)? Some people aren't religious, or for other reasons, they just don't believe in marriage. That doesn't mean a child will grow up without love! You can't equate those things. Whether a couple is married or not has absolutely nothing to do with how much love is in that home.
There are just so many primitive people out there...

The law is a disaster and definitely needs to be overturned!! We want children in America!
It didn't really surprise me, but man, it’s getting old... having to run to the bathroom constantly. My little one clearly thinks my bladder is a jungle gym or something. I'm practically sprinting to the restroom every few minutes. It’s especially annoying when I'm out and about, just like those commercials where they're scanning the room for the nearest restroom. And now with this heat, I'm drinking three times as much water as usual.
Then at night... I finally make it to the bathroom, lay back down, and suddenly feel the baby kicking and doing full-on gymnastics, and five seconds later, there's that pressure on my bladder again. Even though I know it's empty, it still feels like... uh...
I can't even imagine how it'll be by the end of the pregnancy 😢
Honestly, I might just have to start wearing adult diapers; it'd probably be easier than this constant running back and forth 🤣

Maybe he thinks he can't afford to take any time off because of the baby expenses.
Who knows what's actually going through his head.
Either way, you should probably just be honest with him about how you're feeling.

But he knows 😢
Every few days I vent (of course, even though it feels like not enough since these pregnancy hormones are hitting me hard 😉), and I bring it up again, but all he says is: "just hang in there, it'll be fine, just a little longer..." But I just want him here. I’m definitely not staying quiet, I think that would just destroy us. As far as money goes, we're okay, our income is enough to live a normal life. Obviously, it's different when he's away, but it's not like being gone for a month or two is going to change our whole lives right now.
That's what's eating at me, I just can't figure out what he's thinking. If I wasn't so pregnant, I'd drive over to see him and handle it, but I really don't want to travel this late in the game—especially with the risk of going into labor early or needing a doctor. I honestly just want to get inside his head and give him a piece of my mind 😵. I just don't get him.
I've got an idea... maybe I should post his number or email on this forum so we can all jump in and mess with him together 😁

Morgan Barnes3, I'm so glad things are looking up for you. I can barely make sense of anything on an ultrasound, even after the doctor explains it, but seeing that everything is okay and the baby is moving is definitely my favorite part 🙂 (yeah, I can actually feel the kicks now that they're bigger). Small steps are good ones.

Thanks for the support 🙂

Next time I'm pregnant, I'm joining a lesbian group... women just seem to get it more 😉
It’s starting to really get under my skin that my partner isn't taking this pregnancy seriously, and I’m already seven months along. He’s still out on field assignments—working way outside the States—and he just doesn't seem to have any desire to come home and be here for us. He claims he wishes he could, but honestly, it feels like a lie because he has a choice. I know he does, since he can pick between being out in the field or working at the corporate office back home (it's all about the paycheck, obviously). He asks how the baby is doing every single day, but that's where it ends. It’s pretty clear he doesn't plan on being here for the birth unless he absolutely has to be. I just don't get him... he’s never been cold like this before, and I never expected this kind of behavior from him. He even told me once that when we finally have a kid, he'll be there every single second. I really expected so much more... 🙂
I just don't get what the fucking problem is
I'm so frustrated and angry at him. If he was able to make a baby, then he should step up and be by my side, at least now at the end! Such an idiot!
Just needed to vent a little...
And I'm worried that my mood might be affecting the baby, because I tend to get really down, and that’s actually scaring me 😢 (this belongs in the fears thread)
