It doesn't necessarily have to be family issues. But I suspect there's a reason why you were drawn to that one specific individual out of a sea of millions who likely have just as many—if not more—baggage as they do.

Why that person in particular? Only you can really wrap your head around that...
I honestly can’t say for sure. All I can think is that you might be projecting yourself onto this person... which would explain why you feel more empathy for them than for those closest to you.

The reality is that everyone carries their own baggage. If you’re going to take on someone else's struggles, it should at least be people in your own circle—people you actually have the agency to help.

It doesn't even have to be a sick relative; just someone where you can actually make a positive impact.
Otherwise, you're just going to burn yourself out.😵
And once you've hit that wall, you won't be much help to anyone.
