But that’s not actually what I wanted to vent about... what really got under my skin—and totally caught me off guard—was how my mother-in-law is acting while I'm dealing with this high-risk pregnancy. Luckily, I finally blew off some steam between yesterday and today, so I'll try to keep this post calm—if I had written this yesterday, I probably would've been reported for half the things I said.
Look, I know she isn't exactly an emotional person, and I know she tends to ignore us—plus, my husband has a much better relationship with my mom than he does with his own—but sometimes her behavior just leaves me speechless...
Let’s break this down. The cleaning lady I hire when things get desperate has been sick for a while and can't help me out, and since I'm dealing with pregnancy complications, I'm strictly forbidden from scrubbing floors. My mom raised me to be a total neat freak, but my mother-in-law tells me I’m going to wear through the floor tiles if I scrub any harder—she just has a completely different approach to hygiene. My mom taught me that you do deep cleans before major holidays like Christmas or Easter, or whenever the seasons change. Those are just facts.
My MIL cooks because *she* wants to, not because we asked—but whatever, that's a whole other issue... meanwhile, my mom has been doing our cleaning, organizing, laundry, ironing, and everything else since I haven't been able to. While I was stuck in the hospital, my husband called my mom—who lives on the other side of town—saying he didn't have any clean underwear, even though his own mother lives right one floor below him. I think that pretty much says everything about who he feels more connected to.
So, yesterday, my MIL whipped up some canned chili for the nth time—basically a 20-minute lunch. My mom has been coming over for days to do a massive pre-Easter deep clean and is ironing the laundry we run in between. When she went up to the attic yesterday, she saw a huge pile of freshly laundered clothes and assumed they were ours—but they weren't. We only ran one load, and that was mostly just my husband's t-shirts. My dear mother-in-law scooped up her own laundry from the attic and ironed it herself, leaving our/my husband's pile for my mom to deal with.
I feel so bad for my mom because last time she finished cleaning, she collapsed onto the couch here from sheer exhaustion. I want to help her, but both she and my husband won't let me, while my MIL is being a complete nightmare. When I was in the hospital, I was the one cooking for everyone, washing and ironing all her laundry, and making sure the house was spotless—I did a full deep clean for her. And yet, she can't even spare the effort to iron one single load of t-shirts for my mom and her own son.
If she hadn't taken her laundry, I wouldn't say anything—I'd just assume she didn't realize our stuff was there. But this time, I know she saw it and intentionally ignored it. And then she has the nerve to act shocked and deeply offended when my husband is sweet to my mom and ignores her... yeah, okay, venting over.
I've decided that once the baby is born, she won't be cooking for us anymore. I only allowed it to keep the peace in the house, under the condition that since I'm breastfeeding, I won't be eating her food, so I'll take over the cooking for us—because I actually enjoy it and it's not a chore for me.
Jesus, that sounds awful. You made the right call, though it won't be easy; ultimately, you need to be your own little family unit. If that's the kind of mother-in-law she is, it's better that you stay completely independent, because who knows what she might bring up during an argument later on. Hang in there. 🙂
