What exactly is the "ego"? in Spirituality ·
Lisa Morales4 said:wanderinggull35, listen...

don't get caught up in trying to be something specific, just be

be the person you want to see in everyone else
be the change you want to see in the world

haha.. you're a smart one... 🙂

I guess I am the change I want to see in the world...

but I'm not going to limit myself to that... because that might actually get in the way of my own progress and how the world changes...

you obviously misunderstood me, which is probably why you wrote this..

stay happy! 🙂

Lisa Morales4 said:Hey man, does that mean you don't even exist at all? 😛

How do you handle your sense of self when you're dreaming? ...
(And I mean healthy, sweet dreams, not those LSD-induced ones... like Ethan Johnson's 🙂)

My take:

I am whoever I choose to be.

you say: I am... but who are you? 🙂

whatever I want to be.... look, you can't be anything other than your true self, because if you aren't, then it isn't really you. if you just build this fake illusion of who you think you should be, it won't bring any satisfaction... not to you and not to anyone else. it's just not natural. it creates friction, which leads to unrest for everyone involved.

just look at the wars, the killing, the constant human dissatisfaction with themselves and others...
that tells you everything you need to know. people have just convinced themselves they are someone... 🙂

Terry Kim3 said:I’m inclined to agree—I see this exact line of thinking even among people I'm close to. I’d like to hope it’s just an outlet for anger expressed in a messy way, but honestly, you never truly know what someone is capable of when they're pushed into a blind rage.

It’s that primitive, animalistic instinct that kicks in—and look, I get it, I really do—but at the end of the day, we’re supposed to be human beings. We should be striving for a bit more rationality, more empathy, and a shred of tolerance, no matter how disgusting or infuriating a situation might seem.

I can't stand seeing people transform into carbon copies of the very monsters they despise. They convince themselves they're being "righteous" or somehow morally superior by acting out, but in reality, they’re just becoming the exact opposite of what they claim to hate.

People, please—try to act more like something divine and less like wild animals. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against animals, and I certainly don't have anything against people...🙂

Look, friend, you're making a mistake here... who is God? How are you supposed to act like Him when most people don't even know who He is?? Or if He even exists?? 🙂

For everyone else:

Before you go judging someone else, maybe ask yourself why they ended up that way.

Dig deeper... and always remember that your perspective is limited. You don't know everything. If you judge someone instantly, you're just showing how shallow your own awareness is.

You can't just label another person as "not normal." Usually, it's just because you don't understand their struggle. It's easy to say "that's just how they are" and call it a day, but all you're doing is acting like a jerk.

Be a real person and actually prove why they are the way they are... 🙂

The problem is, you can't prove it.

Take care... 🙂

None of us are ever going to truly grasp where we came from... maybe my own consciousness is just too limited, and I get that... but are the people out there actually trying to find their purpose even aware that their perception is being throttled by the general unconsciousness of the society we were born into?

Don't get me wrong... I'm out here trying to figure out my own purpose, and anyone else doing the same is making progress in raising awareness for themselves and everyone else... it builds understanding and peace between people... it creates this new, higher level of awareness that can only benefit humanity.

We've lost our way here... or maybe it's just me who's lost his way. 🙂The whole story about what the "self" actually is... we aren't going to uncover that here, in this state of the collective. All we can really do is guess.

My take is this: I "train" every single day to raise my consciousness, and through how I act, I try to lift the awareness of the people around me... all so that one day, the collective reaches a higher level of awareness... and once that happens, there might actually be a chance for the collective to realize its true purpose.

I guess I've lost my way too. 🙂)))

Karen Adams2 said:Nooooo, I truly had no intention of elevating my ego over yours, but I called you Dr. Wise because that is how you presented yourself from the very start; you are here to help us, after all; therefore, I am listening.🙂 Perhaps you could set aside that ego of yours that is so desperately clinging to my little assumption. Because based on what you're saying, it sounds like we all have issues—either we love too much or we don't love enough. You, supposedly, have solved all of your own problems. I'm listening. How does one establish balance, and what would the definition of that actually be? And let's do this without that "love thy neighbor as thyself" bit😁 because if I wanted to hear that, I would be reading the Bible.🙄
And while we're on the subject, "love thy neighbor"—how on earth are you supposed to love someone you've never met in your life and feel absolutely zero emotional connection toward? This forum serves other purposes, and it isn't my intention to offend anyone, but how can I express my opinion without threatening your sensibilities? Because, I must emphasize, YOU are the one here to provide corrections, not me. You are here to guide us, to direct us... yet you are getting so incredibly defensive over a comment made by someone who is completely insignificant in your life.

🙂 I'm not part of any religion... nor do I care about them...

Your logic is flawed: you said you called him Dr. Wise because that's how he acted at the beginning..

🙂

Maybe ask yourself if there's actually any reason to call someone Dr. Wise in the first place?

What do you gain from that? 🙂 Absolutely nothing...

Now you're defending your ego regarding what was said... you say you didn't mean it... I get that... but you aren't realizing that in the moment you typed it, that *was* the intention... to lift yourself up...

If you'd realized there was no need for that kind of phrasing, we could have actually kept talking...

But instead, you're still busy protecting your ego over what was said... 🙂

You say this: YOU'RE the one here to fix things, not me

Fine, I'm the one fixing things... so I'll indulge your ego by letting you think that... and we'll end this conversation on peaceful terms and with mutual understanding.. 🙂

Best regards... though if you want to actually understand what I'm saying, you'll have to see me as an equal.. because that's how I see you.. 🙂

Ethan Johnson said:Anyone here actually self-aware enough to have a sense of their own "Self"? I’d love to hear a few thoughts from you guys. Once you start digging into your "Self," this weird phenomenon happens where the "Self" starts observing "itself." We basically have to step into the shoes of the thinker—but can the thinker actually know who they are? It's kind of like asking if a knife can cut itself, right?

This whole thing actually popped up from that other thread about "being what you are." But here, I really want to figure out if we can even talk about our "Self" in any meaningful way. Are we just a collection of our thoughts—those random ideas floating through our heads? Probably not, since thoughts just drift in and out whenever they feel like it. So, are we our bodies? Nah, because our bodies are constantly shifting, cells are swapping out, and we're all just getting older. So... what the hell is the "Self" actually?

Bravo. Now that's actual thinking. I'll give you an answer... just hold onto that thought for a second.

Karen Adams2 said:Oh, come on, you know exactly who I mean...😁you can't play coy now😉
Look, let’s just dive back into this topic or maybe pick up where we left off before🙄tell me, how does a truly healthy sense of self-love actually manifest itself?Where exactly is the line where it stops being self-care and starts turning into pure selfishness? What is the actual distinction between healthy self-regard, narcissism, and total egocentrism? Please, I really need you to define that for me.
Because some parts of this just aren't clicking for me... if I say I love myself, heaven forbid I say I absolutely adore myself, suddenly I'm labeled a narcissist; but if I admit I struggle with self-love, then apparently that's wrong too.
So, oh wise and brilliant one, please define what "normal" even looks like here.😁Or, if you're feeling generous, help me understand the balance between healthy self-love and genuine love for others...

Healthy self-love shows up when you love others as much as yourself... which seems impossible... and it's impossible if you're just looking at someone's ego... but if you look at their actual existence, it isn't even an issue... it takes practice to get there... obviously time is needed... the older you are, the more practice you need...

Dr. Wise Guy? 🙂 That's where the conversation ends. I'll explain why, just so I'm not being unfair to you..

You basically attacked my ego to feed yours... but I'm aware of my ego, so you can't hurt it... you aren't aware of yours... so talking to you is pointless... or rather, talking to your ego is... because I respect you... but I'm going to ignore your ego and won't engage with it...

Thanks... and I hope your ego doesn't take offense.. 🙂

I can't even deal with this right now. It's just too much. I guess you're saying:
Oh, hell yeah.😁 It feels way too obvious with him... I mean, if you actually look at his post count... mmm, yeah... pretty suspicious.😁

casualharbor9 said:... I don't know, he seems suspicious to me... 🙂 ... unless there's some sort of virtual-genetic connection between him and a certain three-letter username starting with K?

The mod gave me this handle. I tried picking my own, but someone beat me to it. I guess that's just how it goes.

Names don't matter. They’re just letters. And honestly, letters don't do much for me.

It honestly makes me happy to see people actually satisfied, in every sense of the word. I guess I am right there with them.

This is what I’m trying to get through to people... your traits, your words, even how you look—none of that defines you. You aren't going to find any real happiness chasing that stuff. I guess it just doesn't matter.

Maybe it’s just your own consciousness making you realize that who you actually are isn't what people see on the outside, but what's going on inside. I guess.

Well, I see everyone here is pretty damn happy with themselves... so I guess I'm satisfied too.
I’m just trying to wrap my head around something. If you’re actually happy with how things are, how can you even want to change? I guess an answer isn't even necessary here...
The Absolute Truth in Philosophy ·
Look, I owe you philosophers an apology...

I'll quote Eckhart here (not that I think he's any better than me or you, but he puts this pretty well):

The word reality just boils down to whatever the human mind can wrap itself around, which isn't all that much. Language is built from five basic vowel sounds—a, e, i, o, u. Then you have consonants made by air pressure—s, f, g, and so on. Do you really believe that combining those basic little noises could ever explain who you are, the ultimate purpose of the universe, or even the true essence of a tree or a stone?

It's the same deal with the Truth. What even is the Truth anyway? Not when we don't know who we are or where we're heading. We can make guesses, I guess. 🙂

It's all a waste of breath for the musicians... and for me, too...

So, maybe we should just take all that energy and focus on helping people who aren't happy...

I get the feeling that the people asking these kinds of questions don't actually know who they are...

Most philosophers don't know who they are either... that's why they're always obsessed with questions about the Truth or the Truth of Power. They're really just asking: Who am I? Who am I? Where is the Truth? What's my purpose?

Don't take this as an insult... it's just my opinion. I respect yours... so just respect mine... and we'll get along fine...

If I offended anyone, my bad...

I just want to point out that we aren't going to get anything out of philosophy... but if we help someone else, we'll end up with a better community. Helping can be material or it can be internal... like giving someone peace or understanding...

Don't get me wrong... seriously... everything I'm saying is coming from a good place.

Christian Harris2 said:1) So what? Are you projecting your own self-perceptions onto other people?
2) I think you should at least try to have some faith if you intend to weigh in on religious debates later on.
3) Why don't you read books?

1. I get people by looking at how they aren't like me... "source" is just a word. It doesn't matter what we call it... what do you even call a person when they're acting completely natural?

2. I have beliefs... they just aren't religious. And where did I say I was against anything? Faith?

3. I don't have the time because of work..

4. Why are you asking all this? I'll answer you, fine... just ask me directly.. 🙂
Monsters Among Us in Psychology ·
Apparently, nobody listens to me... which doesn't surprise me much since we live in such an oblivious world... where people just obsess over trivial nonsense... stuff that adds zero value to society... All I see here is ego. One person tries to act superior, then another jumps in... things get heated, everyone takes sides, and suddenly there’s nothing but unrest and friction...

I'm asking you all to actually look at your own words and the words of whoever you're arguing with... Are these the kinds of things people say if they actually want to move humanity forward?

Don't take this personally... and honestly, there's no need to reply to this...

But I guess if you can't hold a conversation without losing your cool or trying to actually understand someone else, you can't really claim you'll help improve society... or help solve issues like this one, or any others, for that matter...

I'd suggest the moderator just lock this thread... it's only going to trigger more fighting...

Best, 🙂

Christian Harris2 said:To @wanderinggull35;

I find myself agreeing with you on many points, I suppose. However, maybe you could try presenting your perspective in a way that feels a little less aggressive. You aren't the only one who has spent time studying David Icke, Jiddu Krishnamurti, or Chögyam Trungpa.
I don't think you've truly grasped the essence of God.
It might just be your perception.

Sorry friend if that came off as an attack...

Anyway, I haven't actually read any of those guys... I don't really deal with psychology... and I don't read books much... honestly, hardly at all...

I just read myself and observed others...

As for God, I don't know anything... I don't even know who He is, let alone grab Him by the beard.... 🙂

I can't tell if you're just too lazy to explain yourself or if you're actually trying to flex how much "better" your perspective is than mine...

So, come on, walk me through it. Why on earth do you think absolutely everything posted on this forum needs to be overanalyzed to such an extreme degree based on just one single sentence?

Sometimes, words are just words. If we constantly dig for hidden meanings behind every little thing, we're just going to end up in endless, pointless arguments...

I'm with you on that...

But here's the real question: what specific traits or characteristics would people actually want to have?

Is that even the question a satisfied person asks? Are all the people listing qualities actually happy with themselves? No. They clearly have some kind of issue...

And regarding stormycanyon11:

I'm happier than God, I deal with way less crap, lucky me!

If she's so satisfied, why bother posting it? That statement doesn't accomplish anything for anyone else. It’s just self-serving...

Take me, for example. I feel content... but I'm not going to go around broadcasting that to everyone. Why would I tell people I'm satisfied? I'll just stay quiet and show it by being kind or doing something helpful for someone...

What's the point of announcing you're happy? People who are actually satisfied don't feel the need to say it. They don't need to, because they're good... 🙂

What do you mean swearing is proof of dissatisfaction??? 😂😂 Where on earth did you get that idea? lol

If I were to say, "Screw you," would you immediately label me as the devil just because certain things are considered taboo?

You don't have to take every single thing posted on an online forum at face value. 🤦 👍

stormycanyon11 said:I honestly feel more blessed than God himself; I deal with far less bullshit on a daily basis, so I’d say luck is definitely on my side.

Are you, though?

First off, you're comparing yourself to a deity. I don't see God, but I know what the word means.

Putting yourself above a divinity... I guess that's the first sign of being an unhappy person.

You said something that doesn't even have a point. It won't help anyone else... it just helps you. You've basically put your ego above everything.

When people act like that, you can tell they're dissatisfied.

Second... you're being vulgar. Swearing is just another indicator of being miserable.

Third, you say, "lucky me!" That just shows how wrapped up you are in your own ego.

You want something. When someone is actually content, they don't need anything else in a material sense.

Don't take this personally. If you do... then my bad.
Monsters Among Us in Psychology ·
What really gets me is when people claim someone was just "born that way"... like there's no way to change them...
They talk big, but they can't actually prove help isn't possible...

What, we're supposed to take two kids and raise them completely differently?

If we teach one kid that killing is okay... then sure, once they grow up, they’ll kill people thinking they're doing something good...

Then we take the second kid and raise them to be decent, teaching them to care for animals because they're sacred beings... that child will believe animals are sacred and act accordingly. If you told that kid, "Nah, animals are just primitive creatures," you'd hurt them. Why? Because they're deeply convinced those animals are sacred...

The point is... don't go judging others before you've judged yourself...

To some people, it's not "normal" if you swear... even if swearing feels totally normal to you...

Understanding should come first, I guess...

We aren't talking about monsters here. We're talking about a person who grew up around people who weren't self-aware...

That person is a victim, not a monster...

Can a child even be a monster?????? Man, oh man... if that's true, then we're all monsters... 🙂

When you're constantly pissed off at yourself and everyone else, it just exposes this deep inner unrest... it's basically a constant war against who you actually are..
I guess we can conclude that the person isn't truly content or happy..
