The "Death by Narrative" Problem: When violence becomes a repetitive trope in Speculative Fiction (Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror) ·
I was rewatching some old fantasy epics last night, and it hit me how much the "shock value" aspect of modern storytelling has completely changed the way we consume high-stakes drama. It feels like we’ve entered this era of what I call "assassination fatigue." You know the feeling—you’re watching a series, and you know there’s a massive political tension building, a character is gaining too much influence, or a certain faction is getting too comfortable. And what happens? Instead of a slow, agonizing burn of political maneuvering or a subtle shift in social power, the story just... snaps. Someone gets taken out. A blade in the dark, a poisoned cup, a sudden ambush.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good twist. I love it when a character I thought was safe suddenly meets a grizzly end because they made a tactical error. That's good writing. But lately, it feels like a lot of prestige television is leaning on sudden, violent removals as a shortcut to progress. It’s like the writers realize they’ve painted themselves into a corner with a complex web of alliances, and rather than untangling the knot, they just grab a pair of scissors and cut the knot out entirely.

When violence becomes the primary mechanism for moving a plot forward, it starts to devalue the stakes. If I know that every time a character reaches a certain level of "threat," they are destined to be eliminated by some shadowy figure or a sudden betrayal, I stop feeling the tension. The tension evaporates because the pattern becomes predictable. You stop rooting for the underdog to survive and start just waiting to see which specific method of execution the writers have chosen for them this week. It turns the drama into a countdown rather than a journey.

I remember reading a critique a few years back about how certain genres use "chaos" as a substitute for "consequence." It’s a huge distinction. True consequence comes from the choices characters make and the ripples those choices send through their world. Chaos is just stuff happening *to* people. When a series leans too hard into the "anyone can die at any second" mentality, it can actually make the world feel smaller and less real. It feels less like a living, breathing society with complex power dynamics and more like a shooting gallery.

I also find myself thinking about the psychological toll this takes on the audience. There’s a certain level of exhaustion that sets in when you’re constantly braced for impact. If a show is constantly punishing its characters with sudden, jarring deaths, it starts to feel nihilistic. It loses that sense of "what if they succeed?" and replaces it with a pervasive sense of "well, they're dead, so why bother caring?" I miss the stories where the threat was the *possibility* of loss, rather than the inevitability of it.

I’m curious to hear what you guys think about the current state of "prestige" genre writing. Do you think we’ve reached a breaking point where sudden violence is becoming a lazy writing tool? Or is this just the natural evolution of storytelling—getting rid of the fluff and getting straight to the high-stakes consequences? Does a high body count actually make a show feel more "adult" or "gritty" to you, or does it just feel like cheap theater after a while?

I honestly hope the whole CN debacle just becomes a footnote—one of those "Remember when?" moments discussed by some
millionaire over drinks at a club in Chicago: "Hey, what was the name of that minister who tried to force that nonsensical all-day school program on us back in '23?"

Then again, if this thing actually moves forward... well, I truly hope they look at how they handled things in Cleveland and adopt their model for full-day schooling.

So, four out of five schools in our city that were actually looking into AT&T ended up backing out once the principals finally got a look at the fine print.
One small step for man...
Hey there.

So, I went ahead and had all my iron levels checked.
Everything looks totally fine, except my TIBC is running a bit low.
The result came back at 43.7—the standard reference range is usually 49 to 75.

I’m honestly not sure if this is low enough to actually worry about, or if doctors just shrug their shoulders at a result like this.
Thanks.

Any chance I could actually track these down somewhere else??? And I don't mean eBay—we're already running way too low on time for shipping delays—but like, is there any way to just pick these up locally here in the States?

We had the team from Foto Zumba shoot us, and honestly, we couldn't be happier—I’d recommend them in a heartbeat...
If you end up booking them, you might actually snag the Kocka band at a slightly lower rate... I'm not entirely sure of the exact discount since they didn't play our set, but I know there's some kind of deal involved. 😉

Between Viva and Boss, which one actually earns your respect?
:-)

I've actually been to two weddings where the Boss played, though I haven't really caught Viv live yet.

In my opinion, the Boss is incredible for setting the vibe—they’re a high-quality band that actually listens to the crowd and knows how to work the room. My only gripe was that they were a bit loud...
Then again, the venues had pretty low ceilings, so maybe that played a part in the acoustics... 😉

Hannah Murphy11 said:After several weeks of walking around and scouting for the right photographer, I’ve finally put together my full review of everything I’ve observed—and believe me, I’ve seen quite a lot. I truly hope this proves useful to anyone else out there, and perhaps, by documenting it all like this, I can finally make sense of my own impressions too.

Getty Images I was looking at a photography and basic video bundle priced at $1,850, which honestly seems like a reasonable deal on paper. Mike seems like an absolute legend—his shots are stunning, and the video work he’s posted on Vimeo is nothing short of perfection. However, after hearing a mountain of horror stories from various sources, I’ve decided to pass on them entirely. From what I can gather, those videos uploaded to Vimeo are actually just the work of Matthew and some other guy who started their own studio called Pixar. The rumors floating around are pretty damning: people are reporting massive delays of five to nine months just to get their photos back, instances where names were misspelled on the actual DVDs, and technical issues where the discs skip constantly. To make matters worse, word is that the actual editing of the footage and photos is being handed off to college students who have absolutely no idea what they are doing. It's just too much of a risk.
Pixar I only saw some of their photos on Facebook, and they honestly look incredible. They sent over a full proposal to my inbox, and the starting price for their basic photo and video package is around $2,200. Unfortunately, they’re already booked for my specific date, so I don't have any more details to share beyond that.
Ivan It’s a flat fee of 1,600 Euros just for the photography. If that sounds like a bargain to you, then by all means, go right ahead!
Fruit of the Loom Studio The basic photo and video package is priced at $2,000. I actually took a look at two wedding galleries they sent over to my email via their online portal. To be perfectly honest, I don’t see what the big deal is; personally, I found them to be somewhat cliché. I also haven't been able to determine if posing direction is included in their services, as I didn't see any shots like that in the galleries, on their blog, or even on their official website. In my estimation, it is far too expensive for the value they are providing, even if the majority of people seem to love their work.
Bonacci Studios I just looked over a photo and video package priced at $1,500. The guy is genuinely personable, his work is technically solid, and I find the price point to be quite reasonable. However, for some reason, I just wasn't blown away by it—I can't quite put my finger on what's missing. That being said, it is definitely worth checking out; I am certain there is someone out there who will absolutely love his style.
Julia's Studio First of all, this guy refuses to even email you a quote; he insists that you show up in person just to talk business. He doesn't have any standardized packages or set pricing structures, which leads me to believe he just pulls numbers out of thin air on the spot. For instance, he told my friend and me that our "special friends price" would be $1,800. It makes me wonder what kind of ridiculous rates he’s quoting everyone else. To make matters more complicated, he brings his wife along to these meetings, so you end up dealing with two photographers and one videographer. He tries to convince us that having two photographers at a wedding is essential while insisting that a single camera is plenty for video. Other professionals say the exact opposite, and frankly, I can't tell who is lying and who is just delusional. We didn't even get to see an actual physical album—just some sample books, photo slideshows, and videos. While the photos themselves are decent, the videos are nothing special. The man was incredibly grating with his constant bragging; he kept acting like he had watched a specific video a hundred times already, only to suddenly get all emotional about it again, crying, "My God, this brought tears to my eyes!" Even though I’m usually a crier, I honestly didn't find anything remotely touching about it. I actually sat down and watched an entire DVD from one of his weddings, and if I were rating him, I’d give him a +2/-3. As for the parent albums? A total disaster. They are hands down the worst we've ever seen. He even claimed they don't even produce specialized albums for parents. When we asked if we could suggest the music for the trailer or certain segments of the wedding video, he told us we could make suggestions, but ultimately, his word is final. Apparently, he used to work at Getty Images.
Getty Images by Tony They offer several different packages consisting of photo albums, coffee table books, and video services. For my part, the most impressive combination—which bundles a high-end album with a full video package—is priced at $1,700. This setup includes one dedicated photographer and one videographer; if you need to add extra staff for larger groups, it’s an additional $250 per person. I have to say, the photography itself is among the absolute best we’ve ever seen. You won't find much of his work posted on Facebook, so I highly recommend scheduling an in-person meeting to see his portfolio. He operates out of a studio in San Francisco. During our consultation, he walked us through two beautiful books and some cinematic clips, though we haven't had the chance to inspect a physical album yet. The guy is incredibly personable and genuinely eager to collaborate. On top of that, he has professional experience working for Getty Images.
Studio Smile The base photo and video package starts at $1,700 (which includes one photographer and one videographer). We actually sat down for a consultation with Ranko Pupić, who runs the studio. Honestly, the meeting was incredibly awkward because he spent the entire time belittling all his competitors while constantly bragging about himself. We sat there for nearly two hours, and the man did nothing but talk about his own work and his past footage. Now, I will be perfectly clear: the guy produces flawless videos. He utilizes every high-end tool imaginable—steady cams, cranes, even helicopters. However, there is a massive catch with the pricing. If you want a "love story" highlight reel, that’s an extra $275. If you want to use the helicopter, add another $165. And if you have more than 150 guests, he recommends bringing in a second videographer, which will cost you an additional $500. You can find examples of his work on Facebook. It is abundantly obvious that he lives and breathes video production, whereas photography seems like an afterthought to him. While we were flipping through the sample albums, he was busy chatting on his cell phone. I was absolutely appalled when I saw how they handled the presentation—they had a single photograph taped directly onto the inside cover page! It looked incredibly unprofessional. Furthermore, there wasn't a single black-and-white shot in the entire album. To put it bluntly: the photos are mediocre, the videos are top-tier, and the man is exhausting to deal with. Ultimately, everything revolves around his specific way of doing things. Vedran Vidak is an option if you want to hire him as a standalone photographer; he charges between $850 and $1,100 depending on which parent or wedding party albums you select. Basically, if you book Studio Smile, Vedran Vidak will likely be the one behind the lens, but you have the flexibility to hire him separately and find someone else to handle the video.
Ante Gašpar offers a photo and video package for $1,300, which includes an additional follow-up session the next day for $333. He is a very down-to-earth, modest family man who previously worked for the local studio in San Francisco. We had a look at his albums and books, and I must say, the photography is among the best we've seen. He has quite a large portfolio on Facebook, and the shots are truly stunning. My only gripe was that some of his pages felt a bit cluttered because there were too many photos packed in (the album has about 300 shots), and just like with the previous guy, a photo was taped to the back cover next to the binding. It feels like he’s incredibly accommodating—he'll do whatever you ask. He works alongside Miljenko Marin for video. From what I observed, they only use a single camera without a tripod, so the video quality is just mediocre. Even the DVD cover looked honestly pathetic, and the main menu on the disc actually says "best off" (yes, with two 'f's). So, the bottom line: the photos are amazing, the video isn't great, but the price is unbeatable.
Photo Studio Zumba offers a wide variety of packages; a solid combination would likely run you between $1,500 and $1,750. For a change of pace, this studio is run by a woman named Dražena. She is very personable and open to collaborating and implementing ideas from her clients. Looking through their albums, we saw a mix of absolutely perfect shots and total disasters. However, I did catch a video of theirs on Vimeo, and it was genuinely impressive.
Photo Marino—I’m not certain on the exact pricing, but I believe it’s around $1,300. If you book them, Gašpar can coordinate with them to handle a follow-up session the following day. We took a look at an album and a DVD from one of their weddings, and frankly, those were the worst photos and videos we have ever encountered, so we decided to cancel our meeting with them.
Studio Forever seems to be a photographer who is just starting out on his own. He mentioned working somewhere else previously, though he didn't specify where. His all-inclusive live package is priced at a very reasonable $1,100. He showed us a "best of" album featuring various wedding shots, mostly posed portraits. There were some truly beautiful images, and I believe he has real potential, but since we haven't seen a full wedding coverage, I can't say for sure how his documentary-style candid shots turn out. We also watched his video work, and it seemed quite good.

There is also Studio Bora—I checked out their website, and I really like their style. I can't recall the exact pricing, though, as I can't find their quote online. Studio Megagraf also offers a million different packages, with prices ranging from $1,100 to over $2,200. I don't have any specific details or impressions regarding these last two because I haven't seen their work in person.

I hope this breakdown proves useful to someone! Personally, I am currently torn between Tony and Ante, so any suggestions, advice, or extra info would be greatly appreciated.

We actually used them ourselves and were beyond happy. We went big—got a large album, parent albums, and a photo book.
Not a single complaint from our side. One of the DVDs we got (out of the six) wouldn't open properly, but they sent us a replacement immediately. They hit their deadlines, too; the photos were ready in less than three months, and they actually checked if we were satisfied before they even processed the payment. 👍

If you book them along with the band Kocka, apparently there's some kind of discount—I'm not sure exactly how much, since we went with a different band.😉

Angela Wright said:Ultrasound is totally harmless—it’s non-invasive and honestly the gold standard for monitoring a pregnancy from day one. I think you might be confusing it with an X-ray. Ultrasounds work by sending out high-frequency sound waves that bounce off things to create an image. It's basically how bats navigate their surroundings, if you want to get technical.

Look, I know, I didn't mix them up. 😉
I’m not usually one to panic, really, but right now? Everything is terrifying. Out of all the things I could have thought about, my mind went straight to that one article—I think it was on the ACOG website—and now I'm just sitting here spiraling a little bit...

redgardener5 said:Honestly, I don't think you have much to worry about. First off, at just two weeks, we're basically talking about fertilization—it’s all very early stages. Plus, if there’s any suspicion of an ectopic pregnancy during those first few weeks, doctors usually run an ultrasound right away just to be safe. I'm currently at 10 weeks, and I've already had about five ultrasounds because of some fibroids and spotting... I really don't think my doctor at the Mayo Clinic would just go around performing unnecessary scans if the risks outweighed the benefits.

Thanks, redgardener5.... 😉

Hey there.

So, here’s the deal—I went to my OBGYN last week for a routine Pap smear and some swabs.
Since I’ve been dealing with this persistent ovarian cyst for a while now, they decided to run an ultrasound too, just to see how everything was looking.

The thing is, I had absolutely no clue at the time that I was already about two weeks pregnant (just confirmed it with a test today).

Does anyone know if that ultrasound could have actually done any damage to such a tiny embryo???

Like, is there some kind of radiation involved or something? I recently stumbled upon an article claiming that ultrasounds can mess with cell development or slow things down...

Maybe this is a bit of a silly question, but I figured I'd ask.
Thanks in advance, everyone.

I know for sure they carry silver shades, though I'm not 100% certain about any gold options...

You might also want to check out General Mills over in San Diego, near that Lidl

Thanks. 😉

Hey, does anyone know where I can pick up some thicker, heavier cardstock for making DIY invitations?
If they have any decent gold tones available, that would be even better... thanks.

Well, ladies, I finally made a decision...

I just wanted to let you know that I ended up passing on the flowers altogether—mostly because my photo studio, Zumba, offered this lighting setup that included these gorgeous table lamps. Honestly? In my opinion, they were way more striking than any floral arrangement could've been.

As for Zumba, they’re absolutely stellar; we'd recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. 😉

So, I’ve got a thyroid ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow.

When I originally booked this, I had both my basic and supplemental insurance coverage active.
Basically, the referral paperwork clearly states that I'm covered.

But then—life happens—and now I'm without both my primary and supplemental plans. Just... gone.
I’m wondering, will they actually charge me for the ultrasound, or does the specialist just glance at the info on the referral and call it a day?

P.S. Does anyone know what a thyroid ultrasound runs for out-of-pocket without insurance?

Thanks.

Does anyone know where I can pick up some tulle and lace around San Francisco? 🤷
Maria Fisher46 said:Your TSH levels look pretty normal, so the results are likely fine. Total T4 is slightly off, but honestly, free hormone (fT4) is usually a much more reliable indicator—so if I were you, I’d probably want a full panel including TSH, fT4, and T3 rather than just looking at total T4. Are you currently taking any medications?

I was only given a referral for those specific tests, and I'm still waiting on an appointment for an ultrasound—probably sometime in early May. But this constant "lump in my throat" feeling won't go away. It's just... always there. I don't know, is it weird to ask my GP for an fT4 referral? I'd hate to feel like I'm trying to tell them how to do their job. Thanks for the help. 😉
Hey everyone—I'm in my late twenties and lately, life has just been one giant stress test. I’ve started getting this weird tightness at the base of my throat... you know that classic "lump in your throat" sensation? Except it’s sticking around way longer than it should and it's honestly pretty uncomfortable. It gets especially annoying whenever I start getting worked up about something.

I went ahead and got my thyroid levels checked and scheduled an ultrasound.
The ultrasound is a month out, but I already have my blood work results back:

Total T3 1.48 nmol/L ref.int. 1.30-3.10
Total T4 62.81 nmol/L ref.int. 66-181
TSH 2.20 mIU/L ref.int. 0.270-4.20

Should I be worried here? 🤷

Thanks.

Olivia Cook7 said:Hey everyone, I'm curious to hear what your experiences have been with Microsoft groups.
Thanks.

So, I was actually the maid of honor at a wedding last year where they played, and honestly? It was phenomenal. They have this great sound, but they aren't one of those obnoxious bands that tries to steal the spotlight—it’s all about the couple and the guests, which is how it should be. They really know their stuff. If I recall correctly, there were five of them, including a girl. And the vocalist just focuses on singing rather than trying to juggle a guitar at the same time, which—in my opinion—is absolutely perfect. Major props to them.
