Joshua Garcia5 said:Hi everyone

I've found myself dealing with a situation that is incredibly difficult to navigate, and even though my friends are supportive, they just don't seem to get it.
Let me explain the situation first, and then I'll address the title.

I chose this specific format because it feels more serious than the others.
I'm writing this because of what my mother is currently going through.
After battling four different incurable illnesses, she’s now facing a fifth. In my eyes, it's the worst one yet: breast cancer.
The doctors say they have to remove her entire left breast. That's "for now," at least.
I realize she isn't alone and that countless women have faced much worse, but it hits differently when you're dealing with someone who has been struggling with depression for years. She's already seen four different psychiatrists who basically gave up on her, telling us, "Psychiatrists are for people who don't understand why they are depressed. You already know why, so there isn't much more we can do." Dealing with a diagnosis like this on top of that mental health struggle makes everything so much harder.

Now, for the reason behind my title.
My friends have always been there for me, just as I've been there for them. But honestly, right now, I can't stand being close to them. One after another, they all tell me, "Don't worry, everything is going to be okay." I know they mean well. I truly do. But I simply cannot handle the empty gestures and the constant "it'll be fine" anymore. And no, I'm not blaming them, I'm not pushing them away, and I'm certainly not accusing them of anything. I'm also not looking for pity. I just want to know: have you ever been in a position where you thought, "If I hear 'everything will be okay' one more time..."?

Again, I understand how hard it is to navigate these moments and why people resort to these optimistic monologues. But really, out of all the ways you could show support, is it truly the best approach to have ten different people all tell you "it'll be fine"?

Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever felt a flash of anger the moment you heard "it'll be okay" in response to your crisis? How did you deal with it? Did you ever tell people how you actually felt about that "magical" little phrase?

I'm with Lachen 100% on this one.
Personally—from my own experience—I only use those kinds of phrases when I'm dealing with people who drain me with their problems and I just don't have the energy to help fix them. I can listen and nod along to most things, but this is basically just a polite, socially acceptable way to bail on an awkward conversation you don't want to be part of. Usually, nobody gets mad when someone vents and just gets a pat on the back and a "you'll be okay." But imagine if they heard: Look, this is exhausting to listen to, so maybe talk to someone else because I just can't deal right now. I've got enough of my own issues—but hey, once you're feeling better, let's grab a coffee.🤣

I heard about it from some of the senior colleagues, and honestly, I’m not really the type to go digging for dirt or talking about interrogation tactics here, but there were definitely some shady connections involved.

I wish I could just be a fly on the wall once the Democrats start their rally.😂
And who actually knows what’s coming during initiation? Not exactly something to be fearless about—are you nervous? 😲

Chloe Green61 said:I always show up to moderate while tipsy—that’s why I’m on the forum so much. People assume I’m just some angry, drunk old lady, when really, I was just a philosophy major. 😕

Sometimes there's this whole moderator-supermod-admin party going on. Everyone involved sits huddled in front of their computers in dark corners, playing games over Skype to see which user responds first to a specific thread—and if you're the first one, you get banned.

Other times, people complain about warnings, so the admins delete them, or the moderators themselves just decide to clear out those issued penalties. So, there you have it.

I bet you picked up your degree while drunk too. 🤣
I love the part about the parties. Do you all still coordinate via DM while wasted? 😬

What a topic. 🙏

Rules are rules. I read them when I first signed up, and I just went through them again. If Chloe Green61 hadn't explicitly pointed out those added sections in her post here, I wouldn't have even noticed—mostly because this stuff has been common knowledge for ages. Nothing new there. Sorry, but I don't really see the point of this thread 🤷

Yeah 😲
I actually posted about this on the Reddit help sub. I was losing my mind over it yesterday...

A specific type of orthotic insert could help, at least for athletic shoes, just to keep the foot more stable, if not all the time...

it's not actually on the pad, it's on the side—I don't really step on that part, but I think it's rubbing against my shoes🤷 It has to be caused by something, though it's interesting that it's only happening on one foot...

I’ve got this on my right big toe. I use a pumice stone every single day—but honestly, I think I’m going to have to see a podiatrist to get it sorted out. It’s actually starting to get pretty uncomfortable when it's touched. 😢

Nah, not really—surfing is one thing, but I actually need to start looking for work 🤣
A checkmark it is!😛

More glitches... I’ve tried logging in ten times now, but the second I click any link on the forum, it kicks me out—back to square one.
Is there some kind of server maintenance going on again? 🤔
Give me a break, guys... I'm pulling 13-hour shifts for the next three days. Have some mercy! I'm basically going to die at work without this forum to keep me sane 🙂
I seriously need to go grab a beer. 😁

I’ve got plenty more in this same vein—just can't recall everything off the top of my head right now. Prices are negotiable. Most of the CDs are in great shape, though they’ve been gathering dust for a while—it feels like a waste to let them just sit there. Hit me up via PM if you're interested.

Phew! What a relief!
I honestly thought I was getting banned for spamming since I posted that picture of Hershey's and Coke in the pets chat 🤦

Anyway, I'm heading back out before I get too sucked into this thread 😬

I tried entering my username and password seven or eight times—nothing worked. It would act like I was logged in, then just kick me right back out to the login screen. Super weird. I even tried logging into the banned users section, and honestly, the worst part? That actually worked 🤣
Benjamin Smith4 said:Everyone who claims they could never part with their pets—that they’d do absolutely anything to keep them by their side—honestly has no idea how much they're lying to themselves... If things truly went south (and I sincerely hope they don't), you'd be ready to ditch them at the mere mention of a snack. It’s just human nature—really, it's the nature of every living creature—to prioritize survival above all else. I don't mean to sound crude, but the cold, hard truth is that if you find yourself backed into a corner with no way out, you wouldn't just let go of those animals; you'd eat them if there wasn't another option available...

It sounds harsh, but that's just the reality of it. ☕

That's just your take on it. Not everyone sees things that way.

Apologies once more.

all five 🙂
but honestly! If the whole world goes down, that's one thing. I was thinking more about what happens when you guys fail in the real world.
wanderingcrane5 said:What the hell are you even talking about? Are you just some kid living off an allowance from your parents?
People lost their jobs. There is literally no better way to realize a crisis is happening than that.
Once the layoffs start rolling in, even if you manage to hang on, you’re sitting there watching your friends, your coworkers, and your own family get canned. You start fearing for your future. You come from some wealthy family and spend your days hunched over a white Apple in some cafe near Central Park? Then maybe open your eyes and look around for once.
This is how people working in those glass office towers in Brooklyn talk—government bureaucrats whose biggest struggle is that gas prices went up and they didn't get their summer bonus. If you had to dig through a dumpster and realize that once you lose your job, you’ll never hold down anything decent again, then you’d actually understand what a crisis looks like.

Because a crisis isn't just some temporary phase that rolls in and out. For a lot of people, it means being permanently stripped of their rights. And one of those is the right to work. Once they label you as redundant, you stay redundant forever.

👍 on the whole thing!

jadeorca42 said:It's pretty obvious you've never actually lived without running water or electricity. Sure, you can improvise with water using jugs, tanks, or buckets, but electricity isn't that easy to fake. What do you think it's like trying to shower in the middle of winter by pouring water from a pitcher that you just heated up on a gas stove or a wood burner? (Unless you happen to have a gas water heater, I suppose.) Or how do you dry your hair without a blow dryer? Just sitting by the fireplace smelling like smoke? Or ironing clothes with an old-school charcoal iron? Or washing your hands in freezing water until your knuckles swell up like knots on a vine after one winter? Or doing laundry by hand because there's no machine, and you can never quite rinse the soap out properly? And since you can't spin-dry anything, you're stuck hanging wet clothes all over the house near the stove or fireplace, making the whole place feel more like a laundromat than a home. Then there's the summer—no fridge means nowhere to put meat or leftovers. You'd be buying groceries day-by-day just so things don't spoil—eggs, milk, meat... everything. Not to mention having no light during those long winter nights, where kids might have to do their homework by lantern light and end up wearing glasses by the time they hit puberty. I've only listed a few perks of 20th-century life; I'll let your imagination do the rest for the 21st century...

But hey, if you're still interested and want to learn how to survive (NNNI), I can offer some lessons on what life is actually like without power. The price? A tiny little thing!

You don't know me, so there's no need for the snap judgments. Even if you were right—which isn't necessarily the case—there's no reason to talk down to me like that.☕
northerntiger said:I didn't even suggest that.

Personally, I could never bring myself to kick an animal out onto the street. To me, a pet is a living being that stays the owner's responsibility for its entire life. That’s why I think the whole "impulse buy" culture is such a huge issue—people treat them like they're just some disposable toy. If you're going to give them a great, protected life, you have to see that commitment through until the very end. Plus, not everyone treats their cats like little indoor accessories. Some folks have houses and big backyards where cats can be more "outdoorsy"—they get to roam, hunt, and explore, then just come back inside to eat and sleep.

😕 And I wasn't saying you were suggesting it—I was just saying my cat probably wouldn't make it if left to her own devices. Cats raised as outdoor pets likely would.

Something else occurred to me. If I had to choose between losing water or electricity, I’d definitely give up the power. I can manage with candles and blankets, but not being able to shower regularly sounds miserable. When you really think about it, modern comforts have made us incredibly spoiled. ☕
My cat doesn't eat Shiba, but she still wouldn't stand a chance in the situation northerntiger is describing. She’s been indoors her whole life—kept warm, pampered, and cared for. If I suddenly let her out after nearly six years to fend for herself and hunt for shelter, it would be the same as killing her intentionally.
Kevin Gonzalez79 said:I love animals, but at this stage of my life, I wouldn't take on even a goldfish, let alone a cat or a dog. There are always complications regarding boarding or pet-sitting; you simply cannot move freely. I plan to get a dog during retirement when I am less mobile.

I suspect that for our generation, the greatest challenge in old age will be BILLS. Electricity, heating, communication, and food.

That’s already becoming an issue for plenty of people today. Just look at security guards or grocery store clerks living on $833 wages while gas and utility prices keep climbing. Honestly, a lot of things we take for granted every single day are probably already considered luxuries for many.
Ryan Vaughn7 said:For me, my dog isn't even on the list of things I could give up. It's just not an option. And if we're talking about what comes last on the list? That would definitely be cigarettes.

I figured someone would bring up smoking 🤣
you smokers! honestly, I could give it all up in a heartbeat 🙂
but who am I to judge? I'd probably go into DT after being without Coca-Cola for twelve hours, so I'll just keep my mouth shut...
Yeah, pets are a heavy subject. I was just reading a thread about someone rehoming two cats—one is 10 and the other is 5.5 years old 😢
it's a coma. I think the only way I'd ever do that is if I knew, 100%, that I couldn't provide for them or meet their basic needs anymore. I'd rather they be well cared for than suffer because of me.
I’m not entirely sure which sub-forum this belongs in—mods, please feel free to move this if I’ve got the wrong spot. Thanks. 🙂

The current global crisis has been weighing on my mind lately. So many people are losing their jobs, facing eviction, drowning in unpaid bills, and even having to give up long-time pets just to get by. The stress and pressure are just relentless...
I honestly have so much respect for individuals who can handle these kinds of life-altering setbacks and still find a way to navigate a completely new reality.
I'm curious—how would you all handle a situation like this?
Would you turn to illegal work, try making and selling something, liquidate everything you own, or focus on protecting your kids, pets, or whatever else matters most?
What would be the absolute last thing you'd ever give up—the one thing you'd hold onto even if you were living on nothing but bread and water?

For me, giving up my pets would be the hardest part; I'd rather go hungry than see them suffer. But honestly, losing my phone would also hit me incredibly hard—I'm a total addict when it comes to the internet and staying connected with people. It sounds silly to some, I know, but I don't think I could handle that level of isolation on top of everything else. You need some kind of outlet to stay sane, right?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
🙂
