You really need to grab the exact version that came on the laptop. An OEM license means a clean, stock version—nothing extra, no modifications... Just try installing it using the key from the sticker. If it works, just activate it normally afterward. And please, don't go touching any of those "activators" or shady tools that might come bundled with whatever version you download...
If that doesn't work, your best bet is probably just calling an authorized service center.
I think there was some kind of CD involved, but I can't quite remember... It was obvious right from the start that I needed to run a backup, which ended up being three or four DVDs worth of stuff. Can I do anything with those? And where am I supposed to find this specific version anyway?...

So... what's the move here? I've got the product key sitting right in front of me, but the actual disc is nowhere to be found. Can I just grab the installer online, run it, and then plug in the key during setup... or is that not how this works?

Yeah, it does... but when I check the system info, the product ID doesn't match what's on the sticker. Is that actually fine?...
So, I’ve got an original copy of Windows 7 installed on my laptop, but the actual disc is long gone... lost in the shuffle somewhere. Now it's finally time to wipe everything and start fresh, which brings me to a bit of a dilemma. Can I just go ahead and format the drive without any issues? Or should I be trying to salvage the product key first? Is there a way to avoid having to shell out cash for a brand new license...
Are you honestly sure it’s because of embarrassment? It doesn't really sound like that to me... I mean, are you actually expecting some deep, profound explanation as to why he's turning you down (or whoever this is about, though I'll just assume it's you)? Because let's be real, nobody can read his mind. Just ask him. It’s unlikely to be some "shame" thing. In my experience, there are usually only two ways this goes: either he's just not feeling the spark and wants to move on, or his conscience finally caught up with him. After all, someone out there is waiting for him—a wife, maybe kids... or even worse, he's cheating on his wife and playing the part of the side piece.
