US soldiers in Afghanistan

So, my boyfriend is a professional soldier in the military. Could someone maybe break down what they actually do over there for me? He keeps telling me he isn't going to a combat zone, but I just don't get why so many people come back from those places acting completely traumatized or totally out of it. Honestly, I’m starting to get this nagging feeling that he’s just sugarcoating things to keep me from worrying, because deep down, I think he's definitely planning on heading out for a deployment one day, even if it's just a "peacekeeping" mission.
