Is gender identity inherent, or is it shaped by our environment?

Sexual identity is a real thing that exists regardless of what kind of environment you’re in—I mean, women feel attraction to men, and men feel it toward women, obviously (barring homosexuals). Gender identity, on the other hand, is something shaped by social norms and how society expects us to act.
