Anesthesia, Resuscitation, and ICU: Q&A in Health ·
Scott Allen10 said:Honestly, what you're describing is exactly how every single patient feels when they head into surgery. The only difference is that some people admit it easily, while others struggle or try to act tough to hide their nerves. But make no mistake—everyone experiences that fear, without exception. Anyone claiming otherwise is just being dishonest. You aren't a unique case or some outlier here. There isn't some secret psychological ritual you need to perform. You simply decide to face it, go to the hospital, and there's a massive chance everything will turn out fine.
Good luck.

Thank you for those supportive and encouraging words. I intend to follow your advice. I was just waiting for a few things to fall into place so that if anything were to go wrong, I could have peace of mind regarding my affairs. I can't go into specifics, but at the very least, I want to know I won't leave things unsettled. It’s a long story, and perhaps an irrelevant one.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I feel that fear too. My anxiety is so intense that the mere thought of being put under makes me freeze up completely. 😢
I’ve been putting off my surgery for two years now, all because of the terrifying thought that I might not wake up. My doctor has warned me several times that I can't delay this any longer, but the fear is simply overwhelming. It's hard to understand why I feel this way; I'm generally an optimist who views life's hurdles as things to be overcome, but the idea of surgery and general anesthesia is a total nightmare... I am almost certain I won't open my eyes again.
Perhaps it stems from having experienced that moment of complete helplessness and "waiting" before, though I was fortunate enough to be in a hospital where they successfully "brought me back."

Is there any kind of psychological preparation for this, or is the burden entirely on the patient? How common is this level of panic before a procedure?

In a way, yes... one of my seven personalities is constantly laughing at the others. It’s actually quite amusing, and since we’ve all grown accustomed to the laughter, we live together in complete harmony. 😁
