Is neighborly surveillance becoming the new normal?
in The World Around Us ·
I was walking through my neighborhood the other day and couldn't help but notice how much tension there is lately. It’s not even about the weather or the local environment anymore; it’s about the eyes. You can practically feel people watching each other's property lines, waiting for someone to slip up or push the boundaries just a little too far.
It honestly feels like the "good neighbor" vibe is dying out. It used to be that if someone was struggling or just being a bit careless, you'd have a quick chat over the fence. Now, it feels like everyone is just keeping a mental log of everyone else's business, waiting for the right moment to make a formal complaint. It makes me want to close my blinds and just stay inside.
I worry that we're moving toward a society where we're constantly policing one another instead of just living our lives. Once you start treating your neighbors like suspects, the sense of community is basically gone.
Does anyone else feel like the social contract is fraying because of all this constant monitoring?
