Australia vs. USA - March 25, 2018 in Formula 1 ·
Give me a break, you conspiracy theorists, stop embarrassing yourselves. Why on earth would an F1 team throw a race just to hand someone a win in the very first round of the season? And do you honestly think Ferrari has the strategic chops to pull off a massive setup like that? They can barely manage basic tactics to keep up with Mercedes during a normal race. Not to mention, Mercedes totally blew it themselves—they could've easily blocked that overtake if they’d actually stayed sharp and built a decent enough gap. Plus, if we're talking about some massive cover-up that would cost people their jobs, you'd have to involve the mechanics changing the tires too. Why would everyone suddenly go silent the second things get dicey? It's Occam's razor, guys. Seriously, Occam's razor.

Man, why even worry? brighthound8 isn't out here dropping official results. This is just his way of having some fun for himself and for us. 😁

briskhound76 said:If that actually turns out to be true, then we are absolutely screwed.😁 So, one of my coworkers snagged 10 points for himself, but somehow our team only walked away with 3. Makes zero sense. 🤦 I didn't even bother watching the rest... we got absolutely robbed.🙂

brighthound8 knows exactly what matters! 🙂
They went ahead and handed Bambi an extra 12 points that he didn't even earn. 😁

I felt the exact same way. 🙏

Finishing 9th and 10th definitely isn't what one of the top teams in the Reddit F1 championship aims for, but hey, that's racing. The competition is brutal and it's easy to lose your footing. We're planning to fight for much more substantial points as the season moves forward.

Who knows what actually went down? It’s totally possible someone on the crew caught the flu and they had to sub in someone who wasn't quite up to speed. Either way, they got absolutely slapped today. I’m betting this failure will be a wake-up call, and we'll see them running flawless pit stops for the rest of the season.

Check out this solid breakdown:

I think they nailed several key points here:
- That massive engine power gap isn't really the story anymore (which is what mellowtiger83 was mentioning earlier in this thread); it's just that Mercedes-Benz has a genuinely great car right now. You can tell because nobody else running a Mercedes engine is even remotely close, unlike last year when you'd see five of them sitting in the top ten.
- Max Verstappen basically choked (to use their words: he "over-drives and underdelivers").
- Charles Leclerc wasn't just beating the rest of the Sauber crew compared to Williams and TRA; he was only 15 seconds behind Esteban Ocon. Unless Ocon is just playing around, the only way Charles Leclerc looks that good is if he's actually becoming a future superstar—which means the situation at Force India is looking pretty grim.

We'll just have to wait and see... Based on what I've seen so far, Mercedes-Benz looks absolutely dominant, and it feels like they just pulled a fast one on everyone here. But hey, who knows? Maybe they'll get proven wrong at the next race.

If we hadn't spent the last few seasons watching Ferrari's tactical blunders during races, I might actually believe they let Kimi Räikkönen push Hamilton as hard as possible, or that they had Sebastian Vettel saving his tires just to make it look like they could hang with the pace. But honestly? I doubt it. 🤷
Australia vs. USA - March 25, 2018 in Formula 1 ·
Ferrari didn't look stupid at all with Kimi's undercut attempt; it was clearly designed to bait Hamilton into covering the move, which buys Sebastian Vettel more time. And that’s exactly what happened. Regardless of the VSC, Vettel ended up on the better strategy, and honestly, I think Kimi was intentionally sacrificed here. The real mystery is what the Mercedes-Benz strategists were thinking, trying to cover him without even waiting a lap or two to see if they could match his pace on those old tires.

Honestly, I’ve been vibing with your takes in this thread lately. New season, new level of objectivity. 👍

Jerry Moore61 said:First off, this season is starting out brilliantly scripted. Mercedes has such an absolute beast of a car that they're lapping the top three teams by a full second, and they're basically two to three seconds clear of everyone else. Then, in this race, just when the Haas F1 Team completely botched things, suddenly Vettel is ahead of Hamilton because of a pit stop crisis. A software issue... yeah, right. Like we're all buying that.

And what's even funnier is how Lujo loses his mind on the radio; "I’m going for it!" And then immediately after saying that, he flies right off the track. Maybe if he actually made a difference, he wouldn't have had to fight to pass Vettel.

This is definitely some backroom deal between Sergio-Toto, because who benefits more from watching Mercedes dominate every single race? Mercedes is going to be first anyway because their car is just too fast. Ferrari will snag a couple of wins just so Sergio can keep his board of directors happy—you know, the whole "we tried everything, but Mercedes is just unbeatable" excuse.

Mercedes is in Formula 1 until the Concorde Agreement expires in 2020, and after that? Bye-bye. All they care about is constant wins and championships. Once that stops being a given, they're gone for good.

Yeah, sure, like there's a massive conspiracy to make the season more exciting and Lewis Hamilton just "let" Vettel through on purpose. 🙏

It just blew up entirely on its own without any outside help. Pure pressure failure, plain and simple. No excuses needed here. 👍

Man, Ric started out dealing with a penalty, but he still managed to pull ahead of Nanda and ended up breathing down Kimi's neck and putting massive pressure on Ferrari.
Australia vs. USA - March 25, 2018 in Formula 1 ·
Kimi got scapegoated here. He was running the exact same strategy as Lewis. That VSC was just pure chaos and totally unpredictable.

He’s not exactly sitting on a championship lead right now, but honestly, I don't see that being an issue for him. This guy is more than capable of flipping the script and leaving everyone in the rearview mirror. 🤣
Australia vs. USA - March 25, 2018 in Formula 1 ·
Verstappen really had a humbling lesson today. Not that he wasn't due for one...
First off, he just spun out of nowhere—probably the only guy to do that today—and then spent about 20 laps stuck in the pack, basically following Alonso's masterclass from behind.

Jason Campbell70 said:Basically—Ferrari completely blew it.

Exactly. This was straight-up suicide, following the classic Ferrari playbook. 👍

mellowtiger83 said:They got wrecked, and honestly, I’m kind of happy about it. Hopefully, this forces Ferrari to get their act together because Mercedes-Benz is clearly the faster car right now.

Yeah, Mercedes is a beast and Lewis Hamilton is just on another level. We probably won't see much excitement from the rest of the field this year.
Australia vs. USA - March 25, 2018 in Formula 1 ·
So, Ted and Martin Brundle just broke it down: if the folks over at Mercedes-Benz knew Sebastian Vettel actually had a shot at overtaking Lewis Hamilton during that VSC, they would've pushed harder to build a bigger gap. Instead, their software was telling them everything was under control, so they just cruised, saving tires and holding steady. Then everything went south.

TR and Williams have absolute garbage drivers right now. All four of them need to just pack it up and head over to Formula E, or maybe drop down to GP2 to actually learn how to drive before they even think about coming back.

nimblesurfer17 said:Wait, where exactly did I say or imply that? 🤔
Let me clear things up for you: nowhere.
I’m just questioning Grosjean's choice to park the car right where he did.
No conspiracies, no rigged races, none of that nonsense.

Alright, alright. A lot of people were talking total nonsense this morning, so I honestly thought you were jumping on the bandwagon of stupidity and hinting at something being fixed. My bad.

nimblesurfer17 said:What does "immediately" even mean here?
Who decides when that moment is, and is he really saying you have to pull over right in a spot that's just going to trigger a Safety Car?
Or could he have just eased the car off to a more logical, safer part of the track?
🤔

Look, it’s one thing if a tire is literally disintegrating and bouncing everywhere, but that wasn't my first impression of what happened here. 🤔

Are you just thinking out loud here, or do you honestly believe Haas conspired to throw away a top result—with Grosjean in on it too—just to time it perfectly while Esteban Ocon was stuck in a bad spot during the Safety Car? Are you actually suggesting the FIA intentionally swapped a Safety Car for an SC, and that someone somehow sabotaged the Mercedes software, all just to hand Ferrari the win at the first race of the season?
