Dell Inspiron boot up issues in IT Support ·
Alexander Wilson17 said:Look, just try hitting F8 or F9. One of those two should kill the screen.

I'm not trying to turn the screen off, and it isn't off when I boot the laptop up.
It's just that I can't figure out why my laptop won't fully start after the Dell Inspiron logo appears. It looks like it's about to show the Windows logo, but then nothing happens. The screen stays lit, but it's just black.

Hey there
So, I woke up this morning planning to grab some coffee and scroll through Facebook, but my laptop refuses to boot up! It was working perfectly fine last night, and I just shut it down after installing an update.
When I hit the power button, everything seems normal at first—it powers on and shows the Dell Inspiron logo during startup. But once it should be switching over to the Windows 8.1 logo, nothing happens. The screen just stays black. You can tell the display is actually on because the backlight kicks in, but that’s as far as it goes.
I've been searching all over the internet for this specific issue, but most people seem to have a totally blank screen from the start, whereas I'm getting stuck right after the initial logo.
I actually performed a clean install of Windows myself, and it's fully activated. To make matters worse, this laptop is practically brand new—less than a week old.

P.S. Either I missed it, or you didn't mention which laptop model this is.

It’s right there in the title. But honestly, if there isn't a fix, I'll just have to make the drive to the nearest repair shop.
Thanks everyone.

shadowlynx102 said:Maybe the screen isn't the issue. It could just be that the laptop won't boot up at all.

So what’s the fix for that? When I hit the power button, I can tell something is happening inside, so I'm stuck. I really need this working.

shadowlynx102 said:Right, see, it didn't cross his mind. What happens when you plug it into a TV or an external monitor and hold down Fn while hitting the F5 key? That should toggle the displays.

I just tried the F5 key, but it still says "no signal." Honestly, I can't even tell if the laptop is booting at all. The hard drive light blinks once and then nothing—dead silence. The fan spins for a bit if it stays on long enough, but the drive is totally quiet, like it isn't even running. It blinks once at startup and then just stops.

shadowlynx102 said:Either your screen died or the internal display cable connecting it to the motherboard failed. Take it to a repair shop or fix it yourself if you have the skills.

That sucks. If it happened while I was actually using it, I could at least say it overheated or a cable burned out... but for it to die while it was turned off? That's weird. And I still don't get why it won't work when I plug it into my TV either.
Thanks anyway.

shadowlynx102 said:Here’s the plan: pull the battery out, hold down the power button for about 30 seconds, put the battery back in, and try turning it on. If you still don't see anything, try plugging it into an external monitor. If there's no signal there either, try shining a flashlight on the screen while the laptop is running to see if there's any faint image visible. Let me know how it goes so we can figure out the next step.

That's pretty much everything I haven't mentioned yet. I already tried the static discharge trick. I also hooked it up via HDMI, but it just says "no signal." I even darkened the room to check for a faint image, but the screen stays totally black.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Everything was running perfectly last night. No glitches, no warnings, nothing. I just closed the lid without shutting it down, letting it go into sleep mode like any other laptop. This morning, I opened it up and hit the power button. The fan spins up and then stops, the hard drive LED flashes briefly before turning off, and the disc drive whirs like usual—but there’s absolutely no image on the screen. I'm posting this from my tablet since it's the only way I can get online right now.
I've scoured every forum, read every thread, and watched countless YouTube tutorials, but I'm still stuck. I tried pulling the RAM and the battery, but nothing worked.
I really need this machine for work, so I'm open to any suggestions.
