So, picked up my stuff from the FedEx today. Paid the man in full.
Lesson learned, though. I guess it’s not worth buying anything more expensive than $100 on eBay.
Douglas Fowler said:Yeah, it adds up fast. You’re looking at maybe 5 or 10% customs duty depending on what kind of sneakers they are, then 22% sales tax on everything—the goods and the shipping—plus those fixed processing fees, and then whatever FedEx charges to get it from the depot to you. Plus, sometimes the mail carrier misreads the numbers. And yeah, they don't always give you a proper receipt either. They gotta grab a coffee too, I guess. 😢

By my math based on what you wrote, I'd say it's about $70, $145 total for the gear. That's roughly 30% once you factor in taxes and duties (you could probably use a calculator to be exact, but I'm just eyeballing it). So that puts it at $43, plus $10 in fees, plus $17 for shipping... so we're looking at around $70. Honestly, who wouldn't just round 210 up to 270 and toss $20 into the tip jar?

Wait, how is it $145 total if the shipping is $33 and the stuff is $112? Won't they try to tax the shipping too?
So, using your numbers (30% of the price + $10 + $17), I end up with $62. I guess we'll see what they tell me at the counter tomorrow.
If what you said is true, it really just shows how messy things are with government services.
"Customs duties and sales tax don't apply even if you're just an individual receiving a gift from abroad worth up to $100."
Damn. So, this thing I got is $90, which is basically 80% of $112. Isn't that a bit much for customs to charge?
So, I ordered some sneakers from the United Kingdom. Everything went fine on eBay—paid the full price plus shipping through PayPal and just waited. Then today, I see this delivery notice saying my package is ready for pickup. Cool. But then I flip the slip over, and apparently, I have to pay $90 just to get my stuff from the post office. Like, why? I already covered the shipping, and even with that, the total is still under $167. It’s a registered shipment too. I can't even call the USPS because they're only available Monday through Friday, and I just noticed the note today.

According to Google:
Price: 39.99 British pounds = 53.50 US dollars
Shipping: 12 British pounds = 16.15 US dollars

At the end of the day, we're talking about legality here, and Joe is such a stickler for the rules that he can't help himself—if anything looks even slightly off, he's going to jump in to fix it. Personally, I just don't have the energy to sit here and argue over some minor technicality like a damn mini-disc.🤣

Yeah, sure. I guess I'll be the one fixing your electricity then. 😉

Some idiot can go ahead and try to defend Arkan if they really think being born an American is such a big deal!
The whole thing being illegal should actually be framed as a way to protect American kids.

btw, cute kid in your pic 😎

Honestly, I’ve always had a soft spot for those Mexican mobsters and war criminals. I even carry a picture of Arkan in my wallet. 😍

Joe feels kinda bummed out because he doesn't have anything to fix. I guess. 🙂

wanderingskipper77 said:🤣 You’ve got threads here about food, Eurovision, soccer, and about a million people obsessed with celebrating some old-school American glory days

And apparently, the birth of a little American kid is enough to give one of our "famous" political forum regulars a massive headache
It sounds like the obsession with those old borders hurts more than anything else when they see an American name popping up on our screens😎

Man, this has turned into such a heated political circus😁

Guess I should just go kill myself then, since I've got an American name too. 🙄
And it's not even a political thread, because I'm not talking about Americans, I'm talking about the topic itself. It doesn't fit the vibe here. Like, am I supposed to start a thread saying, "I have a new girlfriend who's an American!!!"? 🙄

ExxonMobilćIs that northernhound2 the same guy from the Edge avatar?😉🤣

My bad, didn't catch that.

hollowwalker142 said:And there you go—just admit it, you couldn't help yourself from clicking on this thread.😁

Does it sting? Hell yeah, it stings.🤣

I click automatically whenever there's a new post. And yeah, it bites. Not because I have anything against Americans—I am an American myself—but because it's about politics. Even if it's some crazy house, it doesn't matter, it's still just politics for no reason. Let the birth rate go up, I guess, as long as it's happening in the right kind of spreadsheets. 🙂

hollowwalker142 said:So that’s your move, huh? You only showed up just to lecture us and tell everyone exactly where they stand. Typical.če We honestly don't get what you're even trying to tell us.🤷

Honestly, I don't give a damn about "proper" rules or all those self-important editors out there; to me, they’re all just noise, no different than a typo or some trivial grammar nitpick.😁

I guess for me, loving America starts with actually knowing American culture, history, and the language.

EDIT: This turned into a total flame war, so I'm out. Not gonna sit here arguing over who's more American.

I get it—some people on this thread are clearly annoyed by the fact that my kid is:
- an American, born to an American father and mother
- born right here in the free and independent United States,
and that there’s actually a whole thread about it on American Forum - forum.us—but hey, I can't fix that for them. So, if it bothers you, deal with it. We're moving on.
Thanks again to everyone, especially those I already mentioned.🙏

Baby's born, things are good. Really happy about the new life and all that... just thinking maybe the PDF isn't quite right. I guess.
hollowwalker142 said:Why is this even bothering you? Does it actually bother you?
If it’s such an issue, don't open the thread and move on.

Besides, this place is a total madhouse, and people post stuff here that has zero business being in a political subforum.

I guess this is it. Politics. Total madhouse here. These threads probably belong in "Misc" or maybe even over in Offtopic.

By the way, you're supposed to use a hard "ch" sound when you write that word. I guess.

Just one question, how does someone being born, regardless of their nationality, even count as politics?
What's your biggest pet peeve? in Close to Politics ·
I mean, I don't really have an issue with any group, except maybe those specific folks over there, but you know, that doesn't even count. 😁
Living with Americans, chatting with Mexicans on Microsoft... I guess you could call it peak multiculturalism. 🙂
