James Mitchell3 said:So I just picked up this new rig running Windows 7 Home Premium... but I’m torn between upgrading to W7 Pro or just rolling back to Windows XP...

Now I'm really overthinking things... since I've got an Intel i5, 4GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GT230... is there any chance XP might throw me a curveball?

The machine is mainly for work, and my top priority is having something rock-solid and reliable... especially considering how short the lifespan of Windows 7 might be, so if someone could give me a straight answer on the actual benefits of sticking with Windows 7 (setting aside the looks... those Yahoo widgets are fine by me), I'd appreciate it.

Thanks...

I've been using Windows for a lifetime, and honestly, nothing ever hit me quite like Windows 7 did. I grabbed a new desktop—running a Core2Duo at 2.93MHz, 4GB of RAM, and a GTX 250—and I went ahead with a standard Windows XP install. Everything works perfectly, but I couldn't stop thinking about trying out 7 as a dual boot. My first shock was how fast the installation finished, like, only 8 minutes (I seriously doubted it would even work), and then the second thing was how it didn't ask for much during setup and ended up having all my drivers ready to go right out of the box. Using it is just incredible. After messing around with Windows 7 for a couple of days, I actually wiped the whole drive and just installed Windows 7 exclusively, because I knew deep down I wouldn't be going back to XP. Don't get me wrong, I liked XP, but this is just on another level. There are way too many pros to list here, but once you spend a few days living in it, I'm pretty sure XP won't even cross your mind anymore.
Best,

Check out this shot of my C: drive.
So yeah, Windows 7 (32-bit) is taking up more than 8GB, whereas those random 5.8GB files people talk about are just the core OS files themselves. Basically, you're gonna need at least 16GB of breathing room, though honestly, aiming for a 20GB partition is probably the way to go if you don't want things getting cramped.

Fingers crossed this actually worked. Thanks guys.

It’s not that they’re actually bothering me or anything, especially since I've got plenty of breathing room on my drive—about 60GB to spare—but I was pretty caught off guard by how massive this folder is. It's sitting at nearly 6GB, which feels way overkill to me, especially when I see other folks running similar stuff at only around 1.5GB. Plus, I'm scratching my head a bit because I can't even find them tucked away anywhere on the disk.

Does anyone know how I can upload the screenshot from that program—you know, the one that pops up after I finish scanning a disc—right here onto the forum?

You might want to run a d. Cleanup and just wipe everything except for the most recent shadow copy. While you're at it, take a quick look at how much space your Pagefile is hogging.

It’s not even about having tons of files; I’ve just got this one single 5.8GB file taking up space. I can give Disk Cleanup a shot, but since I just formatted the drive, I'm not sure if that'll actually do anything for me. Also, I don't have a Pagefile set up—is that basically the same thing as the old swap file? It could be something related to the swap file, but the size seems way too big for that. That's why I was hoping someone running Windows 7 could help me out by checking the exact file list with this little tool (it's free and doesn't even need installing).
If that doesn't work, maybe they could just tally up the total size of his files and compare it to the actual capacity shown on the C drive (under Local Disk C🙂, to see if the numbers actually match up.
I'm seeing that same 6 GB discrepancy on my end too.

Nah, I checked everywhere and there's absolutely nothing like that hanging around. All I see is the usual Windows, Users, and Program Files folders. But get this—this tool is flagging nearly 6 GB of mystery junk sitting right there at the root of the C: drive.
Just so we're clear, my Windows setup was installed on a totally wiped C: drive.

How much space is your Windows 7 (32-bit) actually eating up on your hard drive?
For me, the OS itself sits at about 8.5 GB, but whenever I run a scan on my C: drive using this tool (http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0...type=downloads), it flags nearly 6 GB of mystery files sitting right there under the C: root that just won't show up—and I've definitely got "show hidden files" turned on. When I check My Computer, the total usage for the C: drive is showing closer to 13 GB.
Is this just how Windows 7 operates, or am I looking at something else entirely?

So, here’s the headache I'm dealing with. I’ve got a 160GB drive split up: the C partition has 100GB running Windows 7, and the D partition has 60GB running Windows XP. My plan was to wipe the XP side clean, shrink it down to 60GB, and then give that extra space over to my main Windows 7 partition so I'd have 100GB for files and 60GB for the OS. But here's where it gets weird—when I pull up Partition Magic 8.0 to try and resize things, it’s acting like there’s zero breathing room on that C drive. It tells me the whole 100GB is totally maxed out! It’s like the software is seeing a brick wall where there should be an open field. If I jump into My Computer, everything looks fine; it clearly shows I've only used about 20GB of that 100GB. Even when I boot back into XP, the math stays the same.
Anyone got a clue what might be causing this glitch?

What’s the absolute bare minimum I should set aside, versus what you’d actually recommend?
I've got a 160GB drive and I'm looking to carve out a separate partition just for my personal files, so I'm trying to figure out how much breathing room I really need to leave for Windows 7?
Thanks!

That didn't do the trick. I did notice something interesting though—I have an external drive with a FAT32 partition specifically set up for my PS3, and when I drop movies and subtitles there, everything works perfectly. But if I try using a partition formatted as NTFS, the system won't even recognize the video files or the subtitle files. It’s like it just ignores them entirely. On Windows 7, I can see all the files and play them through Windows Media Player without a hitch, but when I fire up aviaddxsubs, it sees the folders but the actual .avi and .srt files are totally invisible inside them. There aren't any specific settings in the program to fix this, which is weird because everything runs smoothly on Windows XP.
Any thoughts?

I'm having some trouble getting this software to behave on my Windows 7 version. I've managed to track down version 9.3, which seems to be the last one floating around online.
Every time I fire it up and hit browse to grab an AVI file, the window just looks totally empty—it won't even show me my AVI or SRT files. It used to work like a charm, and I really rely on it since I'm trying to get everything ready for my PlayStation 3.
The program is YouTube

Should I go with the 32-bit version or the 64-bit one? And what's the real reason behind choosing one over the other?
The setup I'm working with is a Core2Duo running at 2.93 GHz with 4 GB of RAM.
Thanks!
