Printer issues? in Computer Peripherals ·
So, I’m running an HP Laptop with Windows 8 and using an HP printer. I went ahead and installed the official drivers, even though the standard Windows 8 ones seemed to work fine at first glance. But here's the kicker: it just won't print anything in color. It’s like the color option doesn't even exist anymore. The weird thing is, when I plug the printer into my desktop—which is also running Windows 8—everything works perfectly. Same document, same printer, same ink levels, and the exact same settings... it's all identical, yet the laptop is stuck in black and white while the desktop handles color without breaking a sweat🙂.
Anyone have a clue what else I should be digging into?
Thanks
System restart after writing to IBM in Hardware ·
The IBM drives are basically the same age, and I did a totally fresh install after a full format. I actually tried putting Windows 7 on there first, but ended up rolling back to Windows XP since the hardware is pretty old school. It’s kind of wild because neither the OS setup nor any of the software installs gave me any trouble during either attempt. One little detail though—the smaller drive is running on SATA, while the bigger one is still stuck on PATA.

My PC keeps rebooting itself whenever I try to write any significant amount of data to my IBM drive. I’ve got a dual-drive setup here—an 80 GB drive running Windows XP and a 200 GB one just for storage. I even tried pulling the larger drive out entirely to see if it was causing a conflict, but the system still kicks itself into a restart during heavy write operations on the smaller OS drive. It isn't some dramatic Blue Screen of Death or anything; the machine just straight up restarts like nothing happened. I've already done the whole deep clean, blowing out all the dust, so that shouldn't be the culprit. Ran HD Tune and it didn't flag any errors, and according to FanInfo, my temps are sitting pretty between 35-38°C (though HD Tune showed it hitting 41°C once). I also ran Memtest86 via the Hiring boot tool and everything came back clean. For the most part, the computer behaves totally fine; small file transfers go through without a hitch, but as soon as I push it with a larger write task, it's game over.

Thanks for the input. My warranty is already up the drain—which feels a bit sketchy since I figured a drive should come with a two-year deal, but apparently my whole laptop was only covered for one year before it expired. To make matters worse, I found out Seagate won't even touch a warranty claim unless their own SeaTools software flags a specific error. It’s honestly such a headache because I really don't want to drop cash on a new hard drive, but this constant anxiety of not knowing if my computer will actually boot up every morning is driving me nuts. Luckily, I've got my backups ready to go.

So, I've got this Western Digital 1 TB HDD hybrid drive with an 8GB SSD tucked inside, and it’s been acting like a total flake lately. Every once in a while, it just loses its boot sequence out of nowhere, leaving me staring at a dead screen in the morning. My workaround is basically playing IT support for myself—I pop in a Windows installation disc, jump into the recovery console, run some fixboot and fixmbr commands, and suddenly everything is back online. Once Windows actually loads, the thing runs like a dream, which is what makes it so weird. There’s no rhyme or reason to it either; it might behave perfectly for twenty days straight, or it could completely brick itself again by tomorrow morning. I ran a surface test through HD Tune Pro and even checked it with CrystalDiskInfo, but they didn't find a single thing wrong. The only red flag I caught was in the S.M.A.R.T. data via HDD Scan, which is flagging a bit error rate of 184. Does anyone have any bright ideas on how to tackle this?
Thanks

Kimberly Wilson67 said:So I've run into a bit of a snag—about a year ago, a buddy of mine set me up with Windows 7 Ultimate, but obviously, it wasn't an official license, and now out of nowhere over the last few days, I'm getting those annoying pop-ups saying my Windows isn't genuine. Any idea what I should do to fix this mess? Thanks a ton!

I can't seem to get my Windows 7 to boot up. Right after the Windows logo pops up, I get hit with this error message and then the whole thing just sits there spinning indefinitely.
My setup is a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 with an i5 processor, 6GB of RAM, and a 1TB hybrid SSD where my C: drive is on its own partition.
Anyone got any ideas?

So, I’m rocking an HP laptop running Windows 7 32-bit (reinstalled more than a few times now). Everything is technically working just fine, but there's this weird glitch where the wireless icon won't show up in the system tray. Instead, I just see that little LAN icon with a big red X over it because I don't have an Ethernet cable plugged in. View on imgur
The thing is, I can hop online via Wi-Fi without any issues and everything works perfectly, it's just that missing icon that's bugging me. Even when I toggle the wireless off on the laptop, the icon just shows up as crossed out to indicate it's off, but as soon as I flip the wireless back on, it reverts right back to that LAN icon. I've already tried reinstalling both the LAN and WLAN drivers twice—even though things were working before—but no luck. I know deep down that the hardware is doing its job, but it’s driving me nuts; anyone have a fix for this?
Thanks

Andrew Patel43 said:I'm trying to get this Windows 7 boot disk running from a USB drive, but I've hit a massive wall. My laptop doesn't even have an optical drive, so I'm stuck choosing between installing via the hard drive or a thumb drive, but neither way seems to be working at all. Does anyone have a workaround or some kind of fix for this situation?

Thanks, man. If I end up installing Windows 7 64-bit, does that actually solve the issue of getting the system to recognize all my RAM, and will it play nice with UEFI BIOS?
Appreciate it.

So, I just picked up this Lenovo G710 (running an Intel Core i5 4200m, with a DVDRW drive, 6GB of RAM, a 1000GB HDD plus an 8GB SSD, an NVIDIA GeForce GT720M, a 17.3" LED screen, LAN, BT, a webcam, and USB 3.0) but it doesn't have an OS installed. I was really hoping to get Windows 7 32-bit running on it, but then I noticed the BIOS is UEFI, which seems to be playing hardball by only supporting 64-bit operating systems. Is there any kind of workaround to make this happen?
Thanks

Thanks for the hand, but I actually managed to sort this out using a much simpler workaround
If you head over to the Control Panel and dive into the Advanced system settings under Performance Settings, you’ll see an option to "Show window contents while dragging." It needs to be checked. If it already looks like it's checked, try switching the setting from "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer" to custom🙂. For some reason, having it set to automatic was causing me all kinds of grief, but once I toggled it over to custom, everything started working perfectly again.

So, I spent all this time tinkering with my PC thinking I had everything dialed in perfectly, but I woke up today to a weird little glitch. I'm running Windows 7, and whenever I pull up a window—like My Computer, for instance—and try to drag it left or right, it feels super off. It’s like only the outer frame moves while the actual content just stays stuck in place. It’s not breaking the computer or anything, but it's definitely annoying because it used to glide smoothly before. The only thing I actually messed with during the overhaul was using a Microsoft tool to merge some partitions. I already uninstalled it, but the issue is still hanging around like it never left.
Anyone have a clue how I can get things back to the way they were?
Thanks
So, I'm running into this weird glitch where my quick print button in Excel just refuses to cooperate. It’s super annoying because if I head into File and hit Print manually, it works perfectly fine, and my printer is acting totally normal in every other app on my machine—I even made sure I've got the latest software version and drivers installed. I'm running Windows 7, and I've actually cycled through several versions of Office from 2002 all the way up to 2007, but the result is always the same 🙂.
Anyone out there have a clue what might be causing this?
Thanks!

My Windows 7 setup runs a backup every single night right around 11 PM, but here's the kicker: every time it kicks off the next day, it just wipes out the previous one like it never even happened. I'm really trying to tweak things so it actually keeps a history of multiple backups instead of just overwriting the old stuff, but I've been digging through the menus and honestly, I can't find a single setting that lets me control the retention like that. Any idea where this is hidden? Help a guy out!
Thanks

Does anyone know how I can set up Windows 7 so that I can just use my mouse scroll wheel to zoom icons in and out on the desktop?
Thanks

See, all those channels are tucked away in the premium tier. It’s probably just like me, someone stuck with the basic package who's totally out of luck when it comes to catching the qualifying rounds.

It’s such a mess, honestly. Sometimes I get the feeling the main goal behind Windows Vista and Windows 7 was just to make everything look flashy, full of graphics, and super fancy, while functionality kind of took a backseat. It feels like they designed it for kids or something.

Personally, I feel like this is a massive step backward compared to how searching worked back in the Windows XP days.
The system lag doesn't bother me quite as much, since running an optimization can dial down the indexer priority, though then things get painfully slow. At least with Google, I can actually see exactly what's being indexed at any given moment...

I do have one tiny gripe with Google too, which is that there isn't a simple way to toggle between searching file contents versus just searching by filename. But hey, it's still alright—definitely better than what we're dealing with here.
It would also be great if we could choose whether to use "whole words only" or other filters every single time we run a search.

Just grab search Everything and you'll never need another search tool again. The program is free, you can find it on a software disc, and here's the link http://www.voidtools.com/.
I've got two internal drives and two external ones packed with about 2 TB of data, and this thing handles it all without breaking a sweat. I'm seriously impressed.

Keith Bennett38 said:that’s just because you’re running Firefox, since Internet Explorer doesn't really have that feature built in.

You can toggle it off like this: Tools - Options - Advanced - Search text as you type (it's those top two options) 🙂
This is what the menu looks like for someone using Firefox in American English 🙂

Thanks man, you actually helped me out too👍
