The cruelty of the "breakout" moment
in Fans ·
Is it just me, or is there something uniquely soul-crushing about getting your big shot and having it snatched away immediately?
I was watching a documentary the other night about some athlete who finally makes it to the big leagues after years of grinding in the minors, only to get sidelined by a freak injury in their very first appearance. It really got me thinking about how much of "success" is just pure, dumb luck. You can do everything right, train harder than everyone else, and hit every milestone, but one bad slip or one weird collision can reset the clock to zero in a split second.
It feels like the universe has a twisted sense of humor sometimes. You spend your whole life preparing for a specific moment, and then the moment happens, and it’s a disaster. It makes you wonder if the mental toll of those "what if" scenarios is harder to recover from than the actual physical setback.
Do you think people can ever truly bounce back from a setback that happens right at the peak of their anticipation?
