One woman, who was actually released from captivity, mentioned that the terrorists were speaking Russian, though they had this distinct Chechen accent.

What an absolute nightmare. I mean, what was the goal here? Did the terrorists actually think the Russian military would just pack up and leave Chechnya just because they seized one school? I doubt it.
There were reports of explosions coming from inside the school—maybe the terrorists lost their cool—which apparently gave special forces the green light to move in. Honestly, though, it feels like that might have just been a convenient excuse to start the operation. They probably knew there were going to be massive casualties and didn't want to admit they couldn't handle the intervention any other way, so they just forced their way in... anyway, it looked pretty half-baked. Between this school mess, the two planes being shot down, the bombs near the subway and shopping malls, and that incident at the zoo, the Russians have basically shown that terrorism is a huge Achilles' heel for them and their anti-terror organization is pretty much a joke.
And as far as the terrorists are concerned, they got exactly what they wanted: they turned the whole world's attention toward Chechnya, and now plenty of people in Russia are starting to think maybe letting the Chechens go is the better option, if only to stop the bloodshed...
I was just watching the BBC, and honestly, it’s heartbreaking. The current numbers are sitting at 250 dead and over 700 injured... and I suspect the death toll is going to climb even higher over the next few days. I mean, the official reports are probably already different, but it feels like they're just feeding the public information bit by bit—slowly increasing the count with every update just to avoid causing too much of a massive shock to everyone. Apparently, some terrorists managed to escape, so now they've locked down the entire city and the state borders... They're showing these images of wounded and dead children and civilians. It's just... awful.
