William Richardson12 said:Both issues stem from specific drivers. For Windows 7, it’s likely your graphics driver. Identify exactly which card you're running, head over to the manufacturer's website, and download the specific driver for your OS version (Windows 7 x86 or x64). From there, you can install it manually via Device Manager or run the setup .exe if one is provided.

As for Windows XP, you might be looking at a bigger headache since that system is ancient history. Developers aren't writing drivers for it anymore; they might not even exist. You need the driver specifically for the network adapter or card you're using, and finding it can be a real nightmare.

I really appreciate it, man. You fixed everything for me—I'm finally back playing World of Tanks. Everything is running smooth now, thanks a million! 🙂

Hey everyone, I just finished fixing up my PC, and now I'm already staring at a new error. 😵

When I installed Windows 7, I’m not sure if I did it correctly; I basically just ran the setup and finished it like any normal person would. Everything was working fine initially, but after turning it back on after some time, the display went completely haywire. The colors are all messed up—green, yellow, you name it—nothing looks right. It’s like the screen got smashed by someone from Scary maziti and everything just scattered everywhere. To make matters worse, on Windows XP, everything looks perfectly normal (I have the option at boot-up to choose between Windows 7 or XP), but the mouse and the internet connection aren't working there. The graphics card isn't dead and the monitor is fine, so the issue has to be something within Windows, right? 🙂 What should my next move be? Should I try reinstalling Windows 7 or just go for a fresh install? I'll give that a shot, but please leave a comment here just in case I can't get it sorted.

On XP, everything runs great except for the connection. 🤔

You'll end up seeing a symbol like this:

EDIT

To post an image, you first need to upload it somewhere, like Imgur. From there, you can just paste one of the links they provide (if it's a file from your hard drive); if you're just using an image from the web, simply grab its direct URL and drop it here.

Alternatively, just tell me the specific model number of your router. You can usually find it printed on the label on the back or underneath the device.

I know that’s how it’s supposed to work, but my settings are grayed out and I don't have any option to change anything. I already renamed the router to JeetSpeed IAD WP3 and tried power cycling it a dozen times, but nothing. It makes no sense because I followed every step perfectly. I’ve tested all the connection methods—the cable light is on and my laptop has internet, but the rest of the house is dead. I searched through the options to fix it, but there's nothing there. Who am I even supposed to call? The idiots over at AT&T can barely follow a simple conversation, let alone fix a technical issue; they just mess around and waste everyone's time. I was thinking about buying a USB dongle—I saw one online for about five bucks that’s supposedly for "locating routers" or something similar, but I'm not sure if it'll actually work. Anyway, thanks a ton for the help. My only move left tomorrow is calling the local technician in my neighborhood; he's usually the only one who actually gets things sorted.

Kimberly Gomez34 said:Try one of the LAN ports (though you probably mean the internet connection). Go ahead and test it out; nothing is going to blow up if you plug it into the wrong one

The DSL uses that standard phone jack style

This is my router; it's identical (this is just a Google image)

I've been messing with this for four days now. I need help!

Should I be seeing some kind of reaction? I'm already testing it out by clicking the internet icon, but nothing comes up—it doesn't even prompt me to search for connections. Everything works perfectly fine on my laptop, though. It just won't say "Internet"; it just lists LAN 4, LAN 3, and so on... 🤦

Just slot it into the designated opening on both the chassis and the router

If you have the manual for the router handy, everything should be laid out there for you

Thanks a lot, but which port am I supposed to use? Here’s what I’m looking at: 😵

Port one: DSL
Port two: LAN 4
Port three: LAN 3
Port four: LAN 2
Port five: LAN 1
And then there's the power button and that phone button next to it, but that doesn't matter.

I don't have the instructions; the people over at AT&T are totally screwing me over.

Man, please help me out here, for God's sake.🙏

William Richardson12 said:Grab an Ethernet cable—it should've come in the box with your router. Plug one end into the LAN port on the back of your PC (usually near the USB slots) and the other into one of the four LAN ports on the router. Just check if you've actually got all those ports available...

I honestly have no clue, man. I don't understand any of this. If you have a video tutorial you could send me, that would be huge. I just got off the phone with AT&T and they wouldn't help me unless I brought the hardware in for repair, which I can't do right now... I'm stuck.

Jonathan Mendoza17 said:It’s not quite that straightforward—if I'm following your logic correctly, anyway. Drivers are pretty much hard-coded to the operating system they were built for. So, just because you have a driver for your mouse on Windows 7, that doesn't mean it'll play nice with Windows XP. Which specific mouse are we talking about here?

I actually got it working—it was recognized during the Windows 7 installation itself—but now I'm running into connection issues. If anyone can help, check my other thread.🙂

William Richardson12 said:First things first, how far away is the router from the PC? Any physical walls or junk blocking the line of sight...

They’re literally 10 cm apart—basically nothing—and the only thing in the way is my PC case, so there aren't any actual obstructions.

The issue is I have absolutely no clue where to plug anything in, what kind of cable I actually need, or if I should be buying multiple cables. 🙂

Hi everyone, I just picked up a mouse, and immediately I've run into another issue.

It’s about getting internet access. It's been a while since I used a desktop, so I'm a bit rusty on how to get this thing online. On laptops, it's easy—you just find the network and enter the password. For a desktop, do I need to buy an Ethernet cable? If so, can someone post a picture of what one looks like? I'm heading out to the store later today, so I want to make sure I know exactly what to ask for. Also, I remember seeing a USB device plugged into this computer before; do I need a specific type of adapter or just a standard USB? I have a router at home that currently has two laptops connected to it.

(If anyone could share a video, that would be great, thanks 😉 )

PS: Just to clear up any confusion, I have a TP-Link router. The laptops aren't plugged into it; they're using Wi-Fi. I'm trying to figure out how to connect the desktop because I assume it can't just pick up wireless signals without some kind of extra hardware or connection.

darkowl72 said:Just track down an older mouse. The real headache with modern hardware is what those tech kids always say—it’s not just about the mouse itself, it's the whole mess surrounding it. Support for Windows XP has been dead for ages, which means nobody is making drivers for it anymore. Windows needs those drivers to actually talk to the mouse, but if they don't exist, you're just stuck with a paperweight...

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm doing right now. I'll let you guys know how it goes. 👍

George Sanders37 said:I'm just trying to answer what you asked in that other photo—it looks like it's asking for a Windows XP installation CD, probably for a specific driver.

Like the others mentioned, Windows XP is pretty outdated now, so you're probably going to run into more issues, especially when it comes to gaming.

Thanks a lot. I'm actually finishing up a Windows installation right now; once it's done on this PC, I'll move it to a USB drive and then I can install it on this broken one.🙂

William Richardson12 said:New mice don't play nice with ancient OSs. Better stay current and grab Windows 8.1... then things might actually work without the headache.

Thanks a lot. I'm downloading Windows 7 onto my laptop right now so I can move it over to a USB drive for that PC.😉

Hey everyone, I’ve been dealing with this for three days now and I'm losing my mind because I'm missing out on an in-game event and I can't play since I don't have my PC set up...

Let me break it down for you.

The issue is with my mouse. I bought a basic one for about $7. I've owned this exact model before and always buy it, but now when I plug it in and try to run the installation, I get this: Sorry about the quality; I couldn't take a better shot because my internet connection is acting up and won't let me upload anything else!
Basically, in that first photo, I tried everything to get through the setup, but nothing works. When I reach the final step where I need to hit Enter, it asks me to locate a file or insert a CD—but there was no CD included in the mouse packaging. It's a standard USB mouse. Here is the second photo for clarification:

I've tried a bunch of different things. My computer was working perfectly fine before this, so I have no idea what is going wrong. To make a long story short:

- It keeps asking me to point to a specific folder, but even when I create a new folder and try to direct it there, it fails.
- It's asking for a CD, but there wasn't any kind of disc in the box with the mouse.
- I've tried every possible setting within the installer, so please don't ask me if I've tried that already.
- Thanks a lot. I'm really hoping for some actual help here; I'd rather not have to haul this thing to a repair shop.😢
Best,
