First Communion gift ideas? in Students & Teens ·
Amy Young12 said:It really feels like everything has just become a gift grab lately—First Communion, Confirmation, weddings... you name it.
The reality is, if you show up empty-handed, people start whispering, "Look, even $17 couldn't manage to get something for the kid!" It's honestly pathetic.

I was there—because of my husband, his close friends, and all that—but I still can't quite shake the disappointment. 😢
Since we were going to buy a gift anyway, we wanted something memorable, especially since it was for a girl (and it was her Confirmation, not her First Communion 🙂) who's eleven. We decided on a wristwatch... my husband left the picking to me... we looked at prices, and let me tell you, my head was spinning because you can't find anything decent under $133 so we found one by $197 — Paris Hilton—and I thought, hey, she's a teenager, she loves that stuff, she follows the trends, so we'll go with something pinkish...

I went in all happy, feeling pretty proud, expecting her to at least open it and look thrilled... (for me, the best part of giving is actually nailing the perfect gift) but... the little girl just made this sour face. How do I even describe that feeling? It was like she thought I'd picked it up at a flea market for like ten bucks... 😢 Then her mom mentioned she’d "outgrown" the color pink, and honestly, my heart just sank...

We're heading back tomorrow to swap it for a different color 😢 and believe me, I am absolutely mortified having to tell the clerk, "Could you please lower the price?" because we acted like we were short on cash and the clerk forgot to take the discount off... it was just awful...

So, I’m heading to a First Communion tomorrow, and honestly? Since I grew up in a different faith, this whole thing feels pretty foreign to me. In my family, we just had the baptism and—boom—that was it. But reading through all these comments, I’m feeling a little uneasy about how much money people are dropping on gifts. It really makes you wonder... what's the actual point of these religious studies classes? Is it to actually learn about faith, or is it just a marathon to get to the gift-giving part?
I actually asked my husband's sister about this—she was at a Confirmation recently (which, again, I'm still trying to wrap my head around)—but she basically just rolled her eyes at me. She told me my nephew has been waking up at 5:00 AM all these years just to sit in church and listen to religious ed, and for what? Just to get through First Communion and Confirmation so he can collect presents? 🙂

Look, if the whole point of the ceremony—if the ritual itself is just an excuse to rack up expensive gifts instead of focusing on something "higher," then count me out. I'm not going tomorrow if that's the case. I have zero intention of buying gold jewelry or high-end watches. 😢
