Dealing with an emotional manipulator in Psychology ·
Look, he isn't all that.
He manipulates—I’m pretty sure he lies, too—but I can't prove it. He always pins everything on me, which means he never takes responsibility, though he’s quick to point out my flaws, whether they're from years ago or right now. He’s cold and calculated, most of the time anyway. And yeah, he definitely uses sex to substitute for actual love, even if he won't admit it. Basically, he rarely owns up to anything. There's hardly any remorse there. He relies on pure snobbery and has this constant need to control everything. He just drains my energy and rarely gives anything back.

I’m pretty sure I’m dealing with an emotional manipulator. Using the word "think" because—look—sometimes he’s actually sweet, attentive, and genuinely kind. But then he flips. He gets cold, rude, and just plain mean. Nobody else sees this side of him, though. To everyone else, he’s the perfect son—super helpful with his parents—and a solid friend. He’s also a workaholic. When he tackles a project, it has to be flawless. That sounds like a good trait on paper, right? Not really. Because if I try to do something and mess up, he hits me with a mountain of criticism, especially when he’s in one of his moods. And man, those moods happen constantly in our two-year relationship. With anyone else, he’s joking around and being social, but not with me. He’ll just shut down—silent, brooding, angry over the smallest things. I feel like I’m walking on eggshells every single day. One wrong move or one misplaced word, and he’ll spiral into this anger that lasts for days. That’s the worst part. It honestly makes me feel worthless. When he’s constantly picking apart my actions and everything I say, I start feeling like I’m fundamentally broken or just "not enough." He’s a total perfectionist, and since life isn't always perfect, he finds a reason to be miserable. Even if I try to act silly just to lighten the mood, he snaps at me for being "immature" or "not on his level"—even though the age gap between us isn't even that big. Sometimes it turns into verbal abuse, and yeah, there’s been physical intimidation too. Yet, here I am, still stuck. Because after the blowups, he puts on that "nice guy" mask again, and suddenly everything feels perfect. It makes me wonder if I’m the problem during the bad times. He never takes responsibility, though. In his mind, it’s always my fault.
So, who’s actually at fault here?
