Honestly, one of the best BCS Bowls we've seen in a minute. Fingers crossed for OT! 😁

It’s looking pretty much over after just the first half. Those guys are absolutely helpless out there—Manti Te'o can't get anything going, and honestly, he's getting absolutely leveled on a few plays too. But hey, at least we've got our gorgeous Miss Alabama keeping things interesting while we watch this blowout 🙂

Man, Lacy is absolutely killing it right now

And then we've got the 4x400 on Sunday. ☕

Man, that 4x100 is gonna be tough without America 😢

🙂 Happy Birthday, Usain Bolt!! 🙂
2009 World Athletics Championships - Berlin in Other Sports ·
Bolt hit 9.92 in the first 100m and then a wild 9.27 in the second 100m = 19.19 🙏🙏

Also, check out this analysis of the record from a few days back—it actually shows he could've gone even faster

Oh, and I gotta give a massive shoutout to Melaine Walker. Why a "massive shoutout"? Well, she had to go up against Bolt and Blanka Cloete on the same day, so naturally, nobody notices her result. But man, she was right on the edge of breaking the WR—she clocked the second-fastest time ever recorded!! 🙏🙏

I've been digging through the stats trying to find a list of World Championship winners from the last few decades—can't seem to wrap my head around
how many of them managed to snag two golds in a row.

It’s actually a bigger list than you might think! But alright, here are the ladies who pulled off back-to-back gold medals:
Marion Jones (100m '97 and '99), Allyson Felix (200m '05 and '07), Merlene Ottey (200m '93 and '95), Cathy Freeman (400m '97 and '99), Ana Fidelia Quirot (800m '95 and '97), Maria de Lurdes Mutola (800m '01 and '03, plus '93 too), Tatyana Tomashova (1500m '03 and '05), Tatyana Samolenko-Dorovskikh (3000m '87 and '91), Tirunesh Dibaba (5000m '03 and '05), Gabriela Szabo (5000m '97 and '99), Tirunesh Dibaba (10000m '05 and '07), Gail Devers (100m hurdles '93 and '95, also '99), Michelle Perry (100m hurdles '05 and '07), Olga Kaniskina (12 miles race walking '07 and '09), Hestrie Cloete (high jump '01 and '03), Elena Isinbaeva (pole vault '05 and '07), Stacy Dragila (pole vault '99 and '01), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (long jump '87 and '91), Tatyana Lebedeva (triple jump '01 and '03), Zhihong Huang (shot put '91 and '93), Astrid Kumbernuss (shot put '95, '97, and '99), Martin Opitz-Hellmann (discus '83 and '87), Franko Dietzsch (discus '99, '05, and '07), Yipsi Moreno (hammer throw '01 and '03), Carolina Klüft (heptathlon '03, '05, and '07).

And then there are those who grabbed two golds, just not consecutively:
Marie-José Pérec (400m '91 and '95), Catherine Ndereba (marathon '03 and '07), Ludmila Engquist (100m hurdles '91 and '97), Nezha Bidouane (400m hurdles '97 and '01), Olimpiada Ivanov (12 miles race walking '01 and '05), Stefko Kostadinov (high jump '87 and '95), Heike Daute-Drechsler (long jump '83 and '93), Fiona May (long jump '95 and '01), Ellina Zvereva (discus '95 and '01), Osleidys Menéndez (javelin '01 and '05), Trine Solberg-Hattestad (javelin '93 and '97), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (heptathlon '87 and '93), Sabine Braun (heptathlon '91 and '97)

With Blanka Vlašić’s gold under our belt, we’re sitting pretty at number 10 on the all-time success list—seriously! We've actually managed to edge out Canada, the Czech Republic, and even France... I mean, if you look at the rankings, Italy isn't even in the conversation somewhere down the line

VIDEO: Blanka Vlašić is the world champ

Here's the clip of the jump from Friedrich—man, she was so incredibly close to clearing it! If she had, I don't think Blanka would've known how to react... honestly, Zeljko Vlašić's reaction after that jump was just "no, no, no"... he knew it was right there.

btw
Friedrich definitely wasn't playing at her usual level today

Actually, Friedrich was totally on her game this year. She’s got one jump at 206, but after that, nothing higher than 203. When you look at the top 10 jumps of the season, Blanka has 7 of them while the cop only has 3. So yeah, Blanka has been consistent all year long, whereas this girl basically had one good day and that's about it.

Honestly, she might actually be the one to finally break Florence Griffith Joyner's record—she's only 18!

Unless, you know, they prove she's actually a dude.. 😁

..but hey, if she is, then I'm staying quiet about Florence too.

Still, I think Jelimo is my top pick to shatter that record. If she hadn't dealt with that injury this year, she would've just swept everyone today. Caster Semenya probably needs to Eat a whole lot more junk food (or whatever it is they feed them, I have no clue) just to catch up to Jelimo, who's only 13 months older.

Anyway, now that Fernandez is gone, it's like we've got Mutola 2 stepping up instead. 😁

Does anyone actually know how many people have officially clocked in under 10 seconds throughout history (you know, during actual sanctioned meets)?
Also, does anyone have the scoop on that guy they used to call "Bullet"? He was an American football player and a world champ in the 100m. I think I saw somewhere once that back in the day—maybe 30 or 40 years ago—he was running around 9.69 (or something like that)?

Robert Lee "Bullet Bob" Hayes 🙏🙏

He was a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys and even snagged a Super Bowl ring in '72.
Plus, he took home gold at the '64 Olympics in Tokyo for both the 100m and the 4x100.

As for the numbers, about 70 people have broken the 10s mark, and another 8 have hit exactly 10s flat.

Anyway, has anyone seen Begić? I was checking the results this morning and couldn't find her anywhere—maybe she's in a different heat?

She's actually in the second group, which just kicked off a minute ago. She's throwing near the end of the set.

EDIT: Bummer, Vera didn't make the cut. She hit 58.25, which would've landed her at 24th, but you needed at least 61.08 to squeeze into the finals.

On the bright side, Sandra Perković is by far the youngest one to make it into the finals with her total score. 🙏
2009 World Athletics Championships - Berlin in Other Sports ·
Sandra Perković hit 62.16 in the discus final—she took 3rd in her qualifying group. With that mark, she would've landed at 6th place in Osaka.
