What counts as "trolling" to you? in Psychology ·

I’m going to have to side against you there. Sure, a decent joint might give you a good laugh, but you can find plenty of other ways to get a good laugh without all that.

I just want to touch on that old saying, "Wise people learn from the mistakes of others, while fools learn from their own."
Honestly? I think that proverb misses the mark this time... at least in certain scenarios. There is a massive gulf between hands-on experience and theoretical understanding. It's exactly why psychologists are always banging on about how schools need more field work and experimental learning instead of just forcing kids to memorize endless facts. But look, when "learning through experience" carries the risk of permanent, life-altering consequences—think addiction, a criminal record, or losing a serious partner—then sticking to the theory is definitely the smarter move. 🙂

Sure, people grasp things best when they go through them personally. But I'm talking about the specific stuff you mentioned earlier—things like addiction, risky sexual behavior, or crime.
I’m not suggesting that experiencing drug abuse or heavy intoxication provides anyone with some profound, positive insight into life or the world. All it really offers is a miserable experience that most intelligent people will go out of their way to never repeat.

Smart people learn from the mistakes of others, while everyone else is stuck learning the hard way through their own screw-ups.
